Today, I stopped by Valley immigration because they were right next door to uscis office. I was…read moretrying to renew my green card, but uscis informed me I had to do that online and I had other questions so I asked for a consultation. They informed me it would be $150 so I paid and got a quick 10 to 15 minute consultation with the lawyer. He told me first priority is to renew my green card. I already knew that. I asked about the last name change with my marriage certificate and he told me the same thing the security at uscis told me, to do it online and attach my document. Okay, I guess I didn't need a $150 consultation for that. Then, I asked him about how my dad became a citizen when I was a minor, but didn't add me because his wife didn't allow him to. I told him that I read and was told by an employee at uscis that I had to fill out a different form for citizenship than applying for citizenship because I was technically a citizen derivative of my father. The lawyer told me because I was an adult and no longer a minor, I just had to renew my green card and I could just apply for my citizenship like anyone else and just wait to apply for my citizenship to change my last name. I was so excited because this means I would have a fresh start and not have to deal with asking my dad for anything. I was then handed off to a paralegal and she kept telling me that I had to renew my green card. I am aware of that. Then, she proceeded to tell me I might not be able to get my citizenship the way the lawyer told me and they might ask about my parents' citizenship status and since my dad is a citizen they might ask for his citizenship paperwork. I let her know that I met with someone at uscis and they told me that already. I'm not able to get my dad to send his citizenship certificate because we don't have a good relationship, but I might be able to get his social. My dad allowed my stepmother to lock my siblings and I out at 4am in Minnesota blizzards. Then, in the basement in the summertime. She was condescending about the fact that I don't have a relationship with my father. She said one minute you said you can't get his citizenship paperwork from him, but the next you say you can get his social. I was able to get his social a few years back, but he was hurt that my family didn't invite him to my brother's wedding so I haven't spoken to him since. He also lives in Minnesota. She said okay, he can email it. I wanted to know how I can get the documents subpoenaed without having to ask him. She said that's a civil matter. She said the most pressing thing right now is for me to renew my green card and once it's been a few months to see if the lawyer can find loopholes, but my dad's citizenship certificate is what I would need most. I let her know I know that's what I had to do, but this meeting was frustrating because I had gotten my hopes up after speaking to the lawyer and him telling me I was going to just be able to get my citizenship the regular way. I let her know that I felt very dismissed and that the meeting seemed fruitless. She told me usually, when they help people, their families are willing to help and that my case was more of a civil matter and that she was going to return my money since they couldn't help me. I was trying to ask if she might have a referral for a civil attorney that can subpoena documents, but because she returned my money, she couldn't answer any more questions or give me referrals. As soon as she returned my money, she basically chased me out like a stray dog.
