On going to court some clients do not understand the lawyer bills for preparation time as well as traveling to and from court. This appears to be the misunderstanding by the client who commented that Jeff over billed a court appearance when the actual court time was about 20 minutes. She/he fails to recognize preparation time and travel time are also billed. It is important to recognize all quality lawyers prepare before court to do their best in court.

He has failed me to get a fair temporary parenting plan because his point of view overshadowed what I wished as a client. He has little patient to listen client. He strives through his moral standard and imposes on client's decision making. He really has a bad practice in billing. He fudges hours to make up the retaining amount. In my case, he charged me a court appearance when there was none on specified date. In his response it was an error in billing but it was actually fudging hours to match retaining fee amount. He also over charged me on court appearance. This was for the temporary order court date. I was in the courtroom less than 20 min and spent another 20 min in the hall way with him so total it was less than an hour. But he charged me 5 hours for an hour of service. This is another evidence of fudging the charges on billing. JB is not an honest lawyer and he should be disbarred.

Expensive, Slow, and the Agreement Already Fell Apart…read more I used Truce Law in 2023/24 for my divorce, involving both children and financial assets to divide. I worked directly with Justin. He is convincing, knowledgeable, and genuinely makes you feel like the collaborative approach will protect your kids and your interests. That pitch is what sold me. I wish the execution had matched it. The process involves paying for an entire team Justin recommends: a mediator, a Divorce Financial Analyst, and attorneys for both parties (including Justin himself). At the hourly rates involved, you expect competence. What I got was not meeting the expectation, at least from the Divorce Financial Analyst. The work product was so poor and unclear that I ended up rebuilding the asset division calculations myself from scratch, with full transparency and no ambiguity. That is work the analyst failed to do, repeatedly. Justin also dropped the ball on communication and follow-up. The agreement was not finalized on time. I had to push things forward myself over the Christmas break. His explanation was essentially that he was stretched thin across other cases. We eventually failed to have an agreement signed before the end of the year. The biggest promise of the collaborative approach is that a well-crafted agreement prevents future legal conflict. That promise has not held up. My agreement is ambiguous in key areas, and I am now dealing with exactly the kind of disputes they told me this process would prevent. Any vagueness in the document has become a point of contention. Long process, high cost, mediocre team, and an agreement that is already causing problems. I would not recommend this firm, do your homework.

I was given a short list of recommended arbitrators by a few attorneys and Cheryll Russell was on…read morethe list as a well known and respected arbitrator in the area. Unfortunately Cheryll Russell was not the arbitrator named in our parenting plan by our commissioner, but, fortunately, when the named arbitrator in our parenting plan had no immediate openings my ex agreed to take our disagreement to Cheryll. We have now had 3 arbitrators decide on issues since 2018 and Cheryll has been the most professional, and seemed to be one of the few professionals I've met that seemed to "get" the red flags for a cluster B personality. She was fair in her judgment, centered the child, only ruled on issues that could be confirmed in court, backed up her rulings with case law, and, most importantly, had safeguards for personalities that will appeal or request reconsiderations. (Unlike our current arbitrator, she required the person seeking the reconsideration to make a deposit for the reconsideration, rather than bill both parents equally.) Being pro se and a single mom, not being financially exploited by this system and also having someone who can make sound judgments on what is best for the child is so important, and unfortunately rare. Since the ruling went in my favor obviously my ex will not agree to take any further disagreements to Cheryll but I can't express enough how refreshing it is to have a court professional actually act in the best interest of the child. Family court is monetized and it's really hard to do anything right for your child if your ex stops/stalls/creates discord for every little thing. I feel like Cheryll charged appropriately for her services and time and didn't try to exploit either pro se parent. In 5 years this was the only time I have experienced the "dispute resolution" provision "work" the way I assume it is intended to.

Ms. Russell was hired to mediate and then arbitrate a matter with my ex-spouse. The issue at hand…read morewas the custody of our dog. The dog had been in my possession for ~ two years since we'd separated and during that time I had been responsible for almost all of the animal's expenses. My ex would have the dog on occasion but acknowledged that he had told me I could have the dog. I came prepared with two years worth of receipts thinking this would be a pretty simple case. The ex wished to share the dog, switching custody every two weeks. Not surprisingly, I wanted to proceed on my own without the regular contact. She ultimately awarded the dog to my ex-husband because she thought he would be willing to let me in the dog's life, whereas I would not. She was right. Immediately after being given the dog my ex-husband asked me to watch the dog for him while he was on holiday. In this case, she was selected by my ex's lawyer. She based her opinion not on fact but on her pity for my ex-husband. She made it clear in her opinion that I had family and a personal network and hobbies and he had nothing and therefore should have the dog. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. More importantly, she also repeatedly allowed my ex and his lawyer to miss deadlines but would still include their late submissions of materials. Why bother with deadlines in the first place?

Well, I went through a rough divorce and these guys got me through it. It wasn't perfect, but it was never going to be and I truly don't believe I would have survived without them. I went into a divorce thinking it would be so simple because I'm such a reasonable guy. We'd just split everything and all would be fine, right? I mean, she could even have a little more than half because I wanted to make sure she was ok afterwards. Nope, didn't work that way. The ex made domestic violence claims, filed constant motions for this and that -- including a motion for contempt that included a photo of my toothbrush that I had not yet removed from the family home. It was pretty ugly and to be honest, her methods worked at first as I found myself with only one day per week with the kids while a parenting evaluator was scrutinizing my every word. But in the end, it was ok. Katherine got me through it and I can't imagine what things would look like without her. Look, I'm willing to accept the possibility that I had a top-5% style divorce, but my take is that this is something too big to risk with anyone else. If you end up dropping $15k on a divorce attorney and end up thinking "Hmm...that was a waste of money. I didn't need to do that.", then believe me -- that's a GOOD feeling. I mean, I know there's that "divorce for men" firm that apparently drops a ton of money on Google keywords, but even if you think things are going to be easy, seriously consider giving Katherine and Cynthia a call. If you have an ex who you even think MIGHT be a wee bit angry, you'd be crazy not to.
