I Was An Inmate At The Stevens Correctional Center In McDowell County West Virginia I Am Not Afraid To Tell Yelp About My Past Either Okay. So To Begin With This Place Is Very Professionally Even Though It Is Minimum Security They And The Staff Thier Put Security First In All Matters For West Virginia Citizens Okay I Was Released From Thier 1 Month And 22 Days Ago I Went Back Home To Princeton West Virginia In Mercer County. I Have A Great Buddy That Is Still There Named Kevin Husser He Posted Some Things About Himself On Youtube As Well Kevin Is Just 21 Years Old But He Is Still Young So I Hope Being Young And Learning Lifes Lessons Will Teach Him To Say Out And Be Free Again He Lives In Jolo West Virginia Too. But Getting Back In Focus Here That Place Is Top Rate To Making Everyone Happy So That Is It Thank You Kindly For Letting Me Do This Yelp Until Later Take Care We-Out. read more

History

Established in 2005.

In August 2001, McDowell County's Economic Development Authority purchased the former Stevens Clinic Hospital. The purpose of this purchase was to renovate the structure for use as a medium security correctional center. The Welch facility was constructed in 1976. Between 1990 and 1996 the Federal Court System operated the Welch facility, upgrading it to federal standards. The Stevens Facility was also built in compliance with Federal and State standards. The Welch Facility has a maximum capacity of 108 inmates, while the Stevens facility has a maximum capacity of 322. McDowell County has been housing Division of Corrections overflow since 1999. Approximately 177 employees work between the two facilities. As derived from information in achieving Grant funds for the Stevens Center, it was estimated that $38,000,000.00 annually would be infused into the local economy. The first inmates arrived at the Stevens facility on March 2, 2006, by May of 2006 all 322 beds were filled.
