The train station is dirty but the coach seat was perfect and clean once on the train. The passengers and workers were extremely friendly and helpful, making for a great, safe and comforting trip. The boarding process was quick and easy, especially with luggage. Although we had to carry our luggage up 1 stair, the train wasn't sold out so there was plenty of room for our many bags.

Good for the top end of Glasgow's premier shopping street, John Lewis, Buchanan Galleries shopping centre,, the main bus station, the Concert Hall and of course Queen Street rail station, which is easily accessed by a moving travelator. There is an urban myth about this station concerning a drunk who was standing on the end of the platform late one night and decided to relieve himself onto the track. Unfortunately, his ...errr... water came into contact with the live rail and the resulting flashback vaporised the unfortunate individual, leaving only his shoes welded to the platform edge. THIS IS NOT TRUE, it's an urban myth. It's a cool story to scare the kids though! What is interesting is if you stand down the far end of the Inner platform and look down the line towards St. Enoch, you can see the headlights of the next train reflecting on the rails as it pulls into St. Enoch. The section of the line from St. Enoch is quite steep, as the trains have not only just crossed under the river, they also have to get under the main line trains on the Argyll Line.

Buchanan Street itself is a bustling street, so sometimes it's cumbersome with human traffic to have to walk around. Solution: another entrance. You can pretty much get to the station from every direction, and the beauty of it, is it's linked onto the Queen street station, so if you're going to the train station, you needn't set a toe outside! Just ride up the little 'walk-along' escalator and, voila! you're there. The platform has been fixed in recent months to include a plastic barrier, which is nice. I've always got a fear that I'm going to fall into the tracks behind me, and also for those people who are unsure of which train they're getting, it saves the embarassment for trying to get into a train which is opening on the other platform. If you're buying a ticket, make sure you take note of the ticketeer around the corner, not just the main window. There is almost always a queue for ticket buying, as none of the automatic ticket machines seem to be working.

It's close to the O2 Academy, and on gig night, this place is heaving. Otherwise, it's a pretty quiet stop, pretty small too. There's a bus stop right outside here with plenty of buses running down here like the 45 if you are heading to a gig and dont want to fork out more money for a tube ticket on top of your bus ticket. Plenty of parking space here too.

Bridge Street is just a Subway stop like any other, and as mentioned previously is the closest one…read moreto popular venues like the O2 Academy and The Citizens Theatre, there is however, another little place nearby that I've always found fascinating, but never quite had the courage to look into. The Cincinatti Club is a poker club just a few doors up from the station, and as far as I know the only poker club in Glasgow (bar those in casinos and pubs etc). I honestly have no idea what it's like inside, or what the setup is, but in my mind its permanently like a scene from Goodfellas.

Apparently a fortune teller said she would tell her her fate if she "crossed her loof" (which means hand) with some silver. No fortune tellers to be seen on any of my visits here though and certainly no people wanting to cross my loof with some silver. This station is the first stop on the East Kilbride line from Glasgow Central Station. Alight here if you are looking to get to the Shawlands area or if you want to do some shopping at Morrisons which is right next to this station.

Scotstounhill station lies just off a side street from Danes Drive, making it only a short walk…read morefrom Scotstoun Leisure Centre. It lies on the Argyle and North Clyde lines, meaning one can travel on SPT services to Balloch, Clydebank and Helensburgh to the west, Glasgow city centre and Airdrie to the east, and Motherwell and Lanark to the south. I found that to get back to the city centre from this station there wasn't even much point planning out your journey with a timetable, such is the frequency of the trains. There is a train nearly every 10 minutes, with roughly every second one to Queen Street and the others to Central. So like Partick station, your best bet is to just turn up at the station and get the next train you see. The station is very quiet most of the time, though probably a good but busier during the rush hours. It is also handy that if you are getting a train back to the city centre if you look down the line towards Clydebank, you can actually see oncoming trains stopping at Garscadden station a very short length away, so you get plenty of warning of your train arriving. But beware, it is not an island platform here so if you're running late for the train you may have to hot foot it over the footbridge before it leaves!

Scotstounhill Station is a small, two-platform station that services the Scotstoun and Knightswood…read moreareas, connecting them to Glasgow city centre via regular trains for Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central. From here trains go on to Cumbernauld, Dalmuir, Dumbarton and Motherwell. It's quite a nice station, with covered waiting areas and a bridge that connects the two platforms. There's a staffed ticket office as well as self service ticket machines but no barriers. There are bike racks available and you can pick up Scotrail's free WiFi here. There's no shop or anything within the station, but there's a small post office nearby. There's nothing much special going on here but as a small commuter station it's A-Ok.

Barnhill station is practically just a stone's throw from Springburn station, but it is the closest…read morestation to St Rollox retail park, which includes a Lidl, Costco and Tesco superstore. It lies just off Petershill Road and the large Royal Mail sorting office - a major employer in the area. The train service is frequent, with trains between Springburn and the west end of Glasgow (Balloch, Dalmuir, Milngavie) calling here. The station is usually very quiet but I would not recommend hanging around after dark, as the nearby area is somewhat dodgy. It is not ideal that Barnhill does not have a ticket office or waiting room, though given it is such a quiet station it is understandable. It would definitely be better to sit in a proper waiting room on a cold winter's night though, rather than the somewhat primitive bus shelter-style ones here. I was bemused to learn that Barnhill does not see any trains stop at it on a Sunday, which gives it the appearance of some sort of ghost station on the ScotRail timetable. I know that the station is not well-used but to have it totally closed on a Sunday is absolute blasphemy. If the lack of patronage justifies its closure, then why not do the same with other quiet stations like Scotstounhill or Hillington East?

As far as destinations go, if you are leaving here or heading in the opposite direction, you are…read moreheading in the right direction. At Airdrie train station there is not a lot to do or see and as for facilities there is a snack bar on site with limited selection and opening hours. There is an open waiting room that will keep you dry as long as you don't mind the wind. Outside the station within a few minutes walk there is a taxi rank but at most times there are no taxis, for shops in the area are now limited to betting shops, charity and pound lands. In the summer it may be nice but when winter comes it can be depressing.

Airdrie, Airdrie. Little town in North Lanarkshire. Loads of money was spent extending the line to…read moreEdinburgh, and most of the money was spent between here and Drumgelloch, with new bridges etc built and widening stations etc. this station is huge. Why Airdrie council don't take advantage of this in trying to get people from both Airdrie and Edinburgh to come here. The station looks great. Shame, they left the old cabin office. What they were thinking, I'll never know. Get a new building that doesn't stand out like a sorethumb and I'll give you 5 stars.

This is a side platformed station that opened in 1887. It's built on the site of a former brick and…read moretile works. There have been plans to re-build, move or upgrade it since 1998, presumably this will be one of the first stations due for an upgrade after the current work at Queen Street Station is finished. There's a small car park and some bike stands for the station and self service ticket machines are available for when the station isn't staffed. The two platforms are accessible by wheelchair and are connected with a footbridge (and presumably lifts). There's a little seating and some waiting rooms but not much else. It's a very convenient station for getting between Anniesland and the Glasgow City Centre, especially since both Jordanhill and Anniesland stations are currently experiencing reduced services because of the Queen Street Station works. It's also handy for the University of Strathclyde's Jordanhill Campus.

Well, there's not much to say about this station really. It's not going to win any awards for…read moreaesthetics or facilities. However if there was an award going for handiest resource for Jordanhill residents, it'd probably make the top three. Two platforms, a ticket machine (no counter) and a little sheltered area, it's OK and offers four services an hour to Dalmuir and the same to Glasgow, going on to Motherwell and Springburn. Most importantly, the area is safe given its close proximity to Crow Road. It's not completely dull; I once recall a local paper reporting that an article for Wikipedia on the station was the 1,000,000th English entry on the website. I guess every dog has its day.
