I cannot say enough good things about Stine Veterinary Hospital. I rescued a sweet dog who had been dumped and was in urgent need of emergency eye surgery. Our first experience at another vet was heartbreaking -- we were met with long hours of waiting, very little compassion, and no real sense of urgency. After leaving the first vet, I called Stine in tears, feeling completely defeated and overwhelmed. The receptionist was incredibly calming, caring, and compassionate. Just that phone call alone gave me hope -- and when we arrived, that feeling only grew stronger. From the moment we walked in, they immediately recognized how serious her condition was and made room to see her. The team acted quickly and performed the surgery to remove her eye, giving her the relief and care she desperately needed. Every single person we encountered was truly kind, patient, and compassionate. They took the time to explain everything clearly, and the discharge instructions were easy to understand, which meant so much during such an emotional time. You can genuinely tell the ladies there love what they do and care deeply about the animals and the people who love them. Because of this experience, I will be bringing all of my dogs here from now on -- even though it means commuting from far away. These guys are the best vet in Bakersfield. They have gotten us an appointment quickly after every call to them. Doctor Sterling is great with our girls. He loves them and takes great care of them. This place was very easy to find. Its located close to Critters Without Litters! I booked my appt online and when someone called me to confirm my appt and collect a deposit of $118 I was offered a sooner appt, actually 2 days sooner which I appreciated. Once I got there everyone was so friendly, of course my Bella is wonderful, she is soo loveable! From what I saw the staff was non stop busy working but they were great with all costumers and pets. The waiting area is a bit small but customers and their pets can wait outside and the staff will go outside if needed. Again the staff was great and the doctor, he was awesome! He was so great with my Bella! He did a visual exam, asked questions and she was given 2 shots and antibiotics to go home with. The deposit i paid over the phone did go towards my visit but I still paid an extra 286. Maybe because it's a hospital or maybe my reason was an urgent matter or maybes that's just how expensive it is when you don't have pet insurance. I did love this place, but im going to put my Bella on one of Banfields optimum wellness plans, it makes sense financially. And maybe for an emergency in the future I would definitely return here to Stine Veterinary Hospital! read more

$100 just for a parvo vaccine, because there has to be a tech fee??? The tech NEEDS to do an exam prior to vaccine. When I was told my puppy doesn't need an exam by the dr since it's just her 2nd round, but they didn't tell me there would be a tech exam, I understand if my puppy seems sick or I had a concern. $90 fee + vaccine fee just for her to get a shot. Will not be returning. ( she had already had her well visit exam 2 weeks prior by the dr and said she was healthy) Being straightforward with your clients about the fees instead of mentioning afterwards. read more

We moved our 8 pets to a different veterinarian after they became corporate owned! Staff attitude was alarming after the takeover.

Today we made the heartbreaking decision to put our 17 year old female Min Pin down. We called to make an appointment and they got us in the same day. Freddy walked us through the procedure step by step and exactly what to expect. He was so kind and compassionate through the entire process, even giving my wife a box of tissues when he saw she needed it. They rolled in a tray full of doggy treats, offering our doggy some Chocolate Kisses, saying she could now experience chocolate for the first time in her life. Freddy encouraged us to talk to her during the process, which we did and Freddy talked to her as well as if she were his own. The first shot made her fall asleep but was still breathing. After the final shot, Freddy advised us that she was gone. He offered us an electric razor and glass vails to use if we wanted to save some fur. We did and Freddy carefully placed some fur into 4 separate vails for us and our kids. Freddy took 4 paw prints of our pet and placed them onto a beautiful card with a story about what happens to our pets after they leave this life. Freddy provided us with a special bag to take her in to be buried at a pet cemetery we have in Tehachapi... I want to emphasize how compassionate Freddy was, making this sad experience as pleasant as possible! read more

I cannot complain about the care I received there, however, the cost of going here is very prohibitive. It was much more welcoming when there was one owner/vet. That was the provider since it sold to a corporation. You never really know who is going to show up in the room I can say I've had two really good vets that I found to be acceptable and one that was pretty lukewarm. I have one small older dog that I have spent a great deal on. After her last surgery, I started comparing prices and I've ended up driving to Taft even with the drive. It's much less expensive than what I was spending at Stine. read more

I have been a customer of Stine Vet for many years. I have brought 2 of my current dogs to this office. I recently got a new puppy and of course, I took her here to get her first checkup and receive her first set of shots. It's probably advisable to arrive at least 15 minutes for your appointment to ensure you're seen closer to your appointment time. For routine check-ups and vaccinations, I've never really had a negative experience at Stine. Been fortunate enough to have happy, healthy and thriving pet children so never had to use many of the emergency services provided by the veterinary. Went downhill after Dr. Paulson retired, prices skyrocket. They charged $2000 to fix my elderly cat's teeth and when it didn't work or he didn't do it right they wanted another $1500 to do it over again. I had my brother-in-law take her to another vet for end of life treatment and that vet eased her suffering with care and compassion. She couldn't even eat any more and all they cared about was more money I would rate zero if I could. read more

Thank You!!!! Took my cat, Sofie, in for constantly throwing up. They were wonderful. I was with Sofie every step of the way. They fully communicated what they were going to do. We were seen quickly. I AM IN SHOCK. My senior Pomeranian was in pain walking and begging for help, they got me in super quick thankfully the same day after work, But when I came they told me all he had was diarrhea and that he will be better in a couple days and gave me some meds for that. Not even 5 minutes after being home I was inspecting him more on my own cutting more of his hair and found worms. WORMS HOW DOES A DOCTOR MISS WORMS? HOW DO YOU PAY $400 AND NOT FIND WORMS? Awesome veterinary hospital. The staff was customer friendly and the veterinarian was informative and thorough with my pet canine. This was my very first time ever visit at a veterinary hospital. The waiting room was kind of small. About 15 chairs. I went on a Saturday which was super busy. Wait time from check-in time to being escorted to the inspection room was about 1.5 hours. Another 15 min before seen by first nurse. Then it was another 15 minutes before seen by the veterinarian. Then another 20-25min before I was given some meds. Besides the long overall time, everyone was super gentle and friendly with my dog. Would have got 5 stars but the time was a killer for me. read more

Congrats to Stine veterinary Hospital for inspiring me to write my first Yelp review. They deserve it. We had our dog quoted for dental work a while back. The minimum quote was over $2000, but the estimate was closer to $3000. We recently took our dog to a different vet and had the dental work done for a 10th of that price. We wanted to bring our dog back to Stine for an exam and vaccines so I had an appointment today. There was some miscommunication on my end so I was 10 minutes late thinking I was on time. Any decent establishment would have a 10 to 15 minute grace period, so this should be a non-issue. However, it was quite clear that they had overbooked appointments this morning since the waiting room was FULL. I sat for 40 minutes before politely asking the receptionist what was going on. She didn't tell me I was next or how many pets were in front of mine, only that I was still "in line." Clearly these clowns don't understand the purpose of an appointment. You wanna charge $100 for a quick exam so obviously you think your time is valuable. What about mine? read more

my first time coming here about a year ago I had brought a kitten, around a month old, with a giant hole in its neck and was terribly sick. when I came here to get him checked up, the staff was unbelievably kind and understanding, and gentle with my baby. they then told me he had feline Parvo, and there wasn't much we could do other than supportive care. they went the extra mile and gave my kitty some fluids and some vitamins, no charge, to help him. this was a really low point in my life as well and their eagerness and happiness to help was such a welcoming and comforting environment. My baby is not a year old and is thriving and it wouldn't have been possible without this amazing vet & vet tech staff! I will be going here for as long as I stay in Bakersfield!! read more

I adopted a senior Chihuahua and wanted her to be checked over right away. She had never been spayed, had terrible kennel cough and an inguinal hernia. She also had terrible teeth. I was told the initial visit was 150$ to be paid in advance. So she was seen and I liked the Vet who examined her. He prescribed something for her coughing and I had her nails trimmed and was charged another 100.00. I was kind of taken back. She developed some bleeding so I took her back a week later to get that checked out and to get her scheduled for a dental visit. The prices they wanted to charge me were outrageous. In fact that visit cost 600.00! Meds, lab work, and visit. Fortunately Kern animal services were already going to pay for the hernia repair and spay so I did get that done and she is doing great but I need to find a more affordable place for the dental work and anything else. read more

35 days after the visit and 3 days after the cowardly assault on me. My mother's husband was contacted by Dr Paulson himself while I was at the surgeons being sutured back up again. Good news my dogs foot doesn't have to be amputated after all as my mother was originally told by his staff............. Thanks DR. Paulson for taking a look at this yourself and saving my dog from having his foot removed for no reason and saving me from paying y'all thousands of dollars for a procedure my dog didn't need. I am very glad that I didn't accept this answer and demanded to know the exact details of the type of cancer and why this was recommended. I am very glad I was persistent to come down there and handle this in person after your staff hung up on over 10x. And I'm glad I did what I did to get your attention. The only regrets I have is how disrespectfully and aggressively I was treated by you and your unprofessional staff that lacks any empathy and that it took me going through a great deal of pain and trouble and a dr office visit to get the information I needed regarding my dogs health so I could make the best decisions for him. When my Annie started feeling sick I called around to the vet's trying to get her in and Stine was the only one where a real human answered the phone. Everyone else was giving me a 3 month wait time. They got me in within the week and thank goodness because Annie had IMHA and if she wouldn't have been seen by Dr. Havel I would not have known and Annie most likely would not have made it. Since then they have been so kind to me and Annie. They fit us in when needed, explain treatment plans, and truly care during this horrible time that I hope no other pet owners have to go through. I cannot say enough about Dr. Paulson and Stine Vet. Thankfully we are long-time clients, so we can get in now that it is *impossible* to get in anywhere, since Covid. He is always so gentle and friendly with our cats, and the girls at the front desk are so pleasant. I can be a picky person and have absolutely zero issues with this veterinary clinic. So happy we have them- the nicest man ever! It was worth the four week wait to get our babies in to see him the other day. We left there with smiles on our faces. ~ Note: We had to take a dying kitty to him years ago, and he also was so gentle in that moment. Let us make the decision for ourselves and thoughtfully weighed pros and cons of keeping him alive just to extend his pain. We let him go to the Rainbow Bridge in the end, but were so thankful Dr. Paulson was the one to hold our hands while we did. Extraordinary vet care = Stine Vet. I just love Dr Paulson. He's experienced, reasonable and very compassionate. He provided exceptionally awesome, perfect care for our Goldie for 16 years, we had her put to sleep 4/13/21. We were a work-in, and they were crazy busy. We live in Goleta part-time (my hubs takes care of his 100 yr old mom) and the stupid twit Goleta Vet (Caitlin Kelly at Goodland Vet) said Goldie had vestibular disease in August. Goldie had been declining over the past two years, of course due to her age. We took her to see Dr Paulson for a second opinion on 4/13 and he looked at us, we were fried from caring for her, home-cooked food, hand-fed, many accidents, pee pads outside to protect her feet, rinsing off after each potty, many mini-baths, and my husband was sleeping poorly downstairs with her because she could no longer do the stairs. Her care was that of an infant, and that's okay because she was our very much-loved baby. Dr Paulson looked at our haggard selves, and quickly said her symptoms looked more like a stroke rather than vestibular. He flashed a penlight in her eyes and she had zero pupillary reaction, a definite sign of a stroke. I asked him if "he could do it today" as I knew they were so busy. He said "I can do it right now". He left the room, came back with the relaxant injection, and left again. She laid on my sobbing husband (Goldie was mid thigh and 46 pounds) while I kissed her face and talked gently to her as she relaxed. She looked like her puppy self. He peeked in the door and seemed to know when it was the appropriate time to come in and do the rest. We said okay. They never took her away from us to do the IV. She was relaxed and calm, unlike the tenseness of the past few months. We must have been there for two hours, and we were never rushed. At the end all of the staff acted like family members, over the years we had created a huge bond. Everyone was crying with us and lots of hugging. During her 16 years, she had an ACL repair, high liver enzymes, recurrent UTIs, an abscess in her armpit, ear infections, several other issues that he always diagnosed spot on and treated reasonably and effectively. We trusted every word he said and everything he did. He not only assesses pets, but humans also. He's the best! Of course I'm sobbing as I write this. On the way home I called Goodland Vet and told the receptionist that Dr Kelly misdiagnosed Goldie and the rest. The stupid receptionist didn't quite understand me and asked if we needed an appointment. I told her that we're never going back there, and that Dr Kelly needed to go back to school. Dr Kelly had the audacity to call me minutes later and I asked if she ever checked Goldie's pupils, she asked me if she was blind, so obvi she never did. I posted a bad review on Yelp, and she responded back with blatant lies. Goldie had been seen by her several times since August (curbside service, how convenient for the vet to do assembly line care) and I'm sick over the procedures we put Goldie through. I'm sorry this is so long. read more

We called to alert the vet that a dog had been left to die on the side of the road and we needed immediate help. We were turned away. This was the closest vet to where we found the dog. I had to drive another 20 mins to an "emergency" vet. The poor dog died in my truck before I made it. Worst day ever. The dog begged to live and kept looking at me to save him. He suffered in terrible pain when an animal rescue had already offered to generously pay the vet bill. I'm devastated and had to suffer my own trauma having a dog die in my car without getting him the help that needed because of this vet :( read more

Well my experience wasn't that great. I had an appointment with the vet to have our bulldog pit neutered at 8:30am. Everything went ok until the assistant put a leash on Rocko after I filled out the paperwork and he snarled while wagging his tail at her and made a snapping motion at her hand. I was told then that I may have to take him home and return to be present while anesthesia is administered and that they will call me before noon to let me know if I can bring him in. No call so I called them and after being put on hold was told they would call me back when they called me back I was told they wouldn't be able to do it because he acted aggressive. I understand their concern but taking the day off work to handle this I wish they could of at least not make me wait until noon to inform me I'd wasted my time with them in the first place. Staff is really friendly I can tell they go above and beyond for their fur baby patients, I personally loved how attentive they were with my Baby who I took to get spayed. Baby is normally jumpy around strangers, and I was surprised at how calm she was. I didn't get a chance to meet the doctor but based on her incision I felt like he did a great job. The technician who I assume helps the doctor with the surgeries was also very kind at explaining the post op care and I never felt rushed.
