The sidewinder fries SO good and hands down the BEST cornbread I've ever had - sweet, light, almost fluffy, and melts in the mouth! Service quite slow on Sunday afternoon but I will try to discount that as they seemed slammed. But perhaps an extra cook would be helpful! read more

Driving home to Delaware from Virginia Beach, we decided to stop at Sting Rays for dinner and WOW!!! We really enjoyed our meals. I got the "small size" 6oz steak with Mac and Cheese & sweet potatoes. The steak was very thin cut and tasty!! Perfect for someone who typically can't finish a loaded dinner plate. I finished it all due to the reasonably small portions. The Mac and cheese was amazingly good! And the sweet potatoes fries were obviously just as good. I was given the option to add cinnamon and brown sugar but declined. I'd recommend this place for anyone traveling up or down route 13. Yum yum yum!! 5 stars. Always, Always great. The seafood is local and fresh. The service is quick and friendly. This is where the locals EAT. We're now RVers and discovered that there is a bike path on the east side of the highway the runs all the way from the State Park to Sting-Rays. It's probably about two-miles max ( it's going to be a piece of cake with an eBike) - now we can go up there for breakfast and maybe even dinner when we're camping SCORE.. Go HERE. read more

My goodness, this was somewhere we have passed many times and said, "nope not going to eat at a service station." BIG MISTAKE! We finally stopped here to have some dinner on the way home to New Kent. The navy beans and Lima beans were really good. The fried ss crab sandwich was "eh". The fried oysters were some of the worst I've had. The price was super high and the batter just didn't work. Oysters tasted fresh but they really need to recreate the batter. I make better bread pudding which I must add was way too sticky. The service was ok. Go right past the wines (pick a bottle for your superb dining experience) and look CAREFULLY at all the menus: the chalkboard specials to the left, the desserts between the (metal) counter and the restrooms, and hunker down for a great meal. Just stopped in for a quick dinner while camping at the KOA. Admittedly was a big skeptical when I saw it was attached to a gas station but so glad we stopped. The food was so good, prices reasonable, and service was excellent. Collectively we had cream of crab soup, fried scallops plate, crab cake plate, popcorn shrimp and check tenders. Ordered 6 egg sandwiches on sweet potato biscuits, 2 with ham, 2 with sausage and cheese and 2 with bacon and cheese and a cup of grits to go. 43 minutes later finally order came out. Get in car to continue along and you know what happens next Order wrong and no grits. 2 egg, cheese with fried pork skin on white bread 2 biscuits with ham and 2 sausage on biscuits. We went off peak (past 1pm) and it took more than 45 minutes to get our food (told it would be 15 minutes for chicken). When food came we remarked on how long it took saying that it would be useful to know it would have taken that long as we would have ordered something else for our kids. The waitress remarked "ok. Just truck drivers passing through. With limited options with a big truck, decided to stop here because I wanted some "local" seafood. I was disappointed to find out that the shrimp platter was actually frozen. I went with jumbo shrimp since it was fresh. I got a salad (with slightly brown lettuce), and hard baked potato that I had to send back to be cooked. The cornbread tasted like a yellow cake minus the icing. I also got the clam chowder and was surprised that it was not creamy at all, just a broth, more like a soup, but it was good. My husband had the double burger, the fries cost extra, and it was very rare...supposed to be medium. The best part of the whole $38 meal was the 7 jumbo shrimp. Really good food! Really cold AC, be warned. I can't really figure out the way they can keep track of orders as you wait in line to place your order at the counter and then go sit down. The service is the main reason why I've come here for years. Today, it was absolutely disappointing. Usually they greet you with a smile and treat the service as a sit-down restaurant once you've taken your order. We had a gum chewing, tatted up woman serve us today, and she acted as if we were wasting her time. "Is that all I can get for you?" She snidely asked as we got our food after a 20 minute wait for simple soups and sandwiches. Usually, they check on you periodically, but god forbid, we went swimming today and looked like tourists. Needless to say, there's no regrets with treating a "tourist" like crap. I'm no regular since it's a 30 minute drive from home, but I go often enough that I know how their service behaved historically. Worst visit I've had there this time around. They're lucky that crab soup is so tasty. Not worth it anymore, I think! read more

We visited Cape Charles for Fathers Day weekend and stayed about 500 yards from Sting-Ray's. The next morning we woke up, and headed here for breakfast. We were not expecting much from a gas, convenience and gift shop, until we discovered a diamond in the rough. Nicest folks, amazing pancakes, grits and scrapple. I was quite confused as to why so many people were coming in the shop en masse when I got there. Looked like the church rush. Anyway, the location is smart since it's right off the bridge. There's also a small little gift shop inside as well as a section to buy wine and hot sauces which is nice for tourists. The cashiers at the gift shop were nice. Nothing really special there. But, the people at the restaurant section needs to do better. Really. It took us over 30min to get our food, and it would've taken longer if we didn't go to the counter and ask where our catfish and bbq pork sandwich was. Thirty minutes. To fry a piece of fish and put bbq sauce on some meat. The sad part is that it wasn't even that good. No salt on ANYTHING. Not even the fries. So you have to tell them to do something as silly as putting some type of seasoning on your fish/meat bc ours was not seasoned at all. No lemons were added to our meal either! The pulled bbq sandwich was also cut poorly, and was clumsily placed between a very dry bun. The only good thing was the hush puppies and the cornbread. I'd pay money to eat those. You can tell they made these from scratch. They were DELICIOUS! Other than that, the meats were pretty mediocre at best. I didn't even finish my meal. We just put it in the trunk of the car forgot about it and went to Stuckey's. The bathrooms also needed some ventilation, and hot fast moving water from the sink. It was like washing my hands at a water fountain from a city park. Luke warm with a weak stream. And someone needs to really clean them as well. Not very sanitary at all. Toilet paper all over the floor and mysterious fluids on the floor in the stalls. Come on....you have prime real estate guys. You have the potential to make a lot more money if you pay more attention to these things! Pay attention to your tickets!!!! And get food out in a timely fashion. I've seen mom and pop restaurants work more efficiently than these people. It shouldn't take 30 min to fry 2 pieces of fish and sauce some meat.And if I am waiting that long, it should at least be seasoned well and not taste like bland meat. Stopped by for a crab cake sandwich since I've heard so much about them. Located in a little store. Unfortunately all I could smell was grease. Staff was polite. Crinkle cut fries, least favorite, were very crispy and greasy. The bun was a hamburger bun. The crab cake was ok. A little filler and some internal shells. Comfortable and down-to-earth - not a "dive" and not the place for ordering meatloaf, fergawdsake. The deep fried oysters were perfect: just enough batter to cover, perfectly deep fried, with very fresh, plain oysters also cooked perfectly. A nice piece of cornbread is included, plus two vegetables (I had the sweet potatoes and pinto beans). Service was pleasant and efficient. Must try the breakfast next time. read more

We ran into this place on our way back from Virginia Beach heading to Philadelphia. It was highly recommended to us so we had to give it a try. Its a hole in the wall place next to a gas station but is very well known to the locals. We ordered the crab cake sandwich and a seafood platter. I'm not a big fan of crab cakes but this sandwich was AMAZING!!! I could've probably eaten two myself but I had to share. The seafood platter had fried catfish, scallops, and oysters. Really tasty grub! We just felt like driving over the bay bridge for the heck of it, and suddenly found ourselves a long ways from home with few options to soothe a hungry belly. Came across this place using Yelp, of course, and decided to give it a shot. Suffice to say that they do home-style cookin', and they do it well! Does not live up to the hype. Went there a couple weeks ago while on vacation. There were a few reviews in the guestbook at our rental house recommending the place. It was by far the worst meal we had on the trip. We didn't care (that much) that it was at a gas station/convenience store/ gift shop, or that it was a go uo to the counter to order type place. The food was just not impressive. i had fried shrimp, which was just OK. Not too much taste, but not overly coated in breading either. Other group members got the flounder, which had about a pound of butter on it and just looked unappetizing. The side of mac and cheese was bland. Cornbread was good, but not good enough to make it worth the trip. There was a steady stream of people coming and going the whole time. Not sure if they were first-timers or regulars. One of the locals told us the next night that there was a recent management change and that the food started going downhill after that. read more
