We were staying at The Rex just next door, so we opted to sit outside -- the atmosphere was relaxed, warm, and welcoming. We had a special dinner at Stockhorn on a summer evening. We started with the green salad, and the dressing was light and. delicious. The three of us had a variation of the steak entrees and they were all cooked perfectly and presented with the most yummy tomato salad that loved so much that we asked for an additional serving. The fries were also cooked perfectly. We highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely visit again when we visit Zermatt again. read more

For starters, we were greeted by a charming host with a great sense of humor. He seated us even though we didn't have reservations. To get to our table, we walked past an open fire where a chef was cooking meat and the aroma filled the air. We started with cocktails and wine. My daughter had a decent Tuscan red wine. My wife and son each had a limoncello spritz which tasted like a lemon drop candy. I had a ginger high ball which somewhat satisfied my whiskey craving while giving me some refreshment from the ginger beer. Very tasty! The tenderloin, veal, and lamb chops were all delicious, served with some well-seasoned vegetables and a side of gratin potatoes. Every thing was so good, not a bite was left over. We followed up with a couple desserts- creme brûlée and an apple crisp. Again, we devoured everything. The creme brûlée was delicious although a little runnier than I like. First off, 3 dollar signs is a bit overkill. The quality of the food is worth more than 3 dollar signs, and the bill didn't say 3 dollar signs at all. The service was absolutely next level. I felt as if I was a member of this family's eating at their home. The ambiance was nothing short of a Swiss chalet that is funded by a Swiss bank. I could not recommend this place more. My girlfriend and I just got back from eating at the Stockhorn and it was fantastic. I had the skewers and she had the rib-eye. Each cooked to perfection. Little did I know Zermatt uses msg in everything! It's a cultural thing, called aromat. They even have it at the salad bars as a topping. I have a crazy intolerance for it, and get very sick instantly. In LA where I am from, I cook a lot and eat clean and do t really ever come in contact with preservatives. I figured Zermatt would have very clean ingredients. After much research I eagerly booked a reservation here believing everything was local and scratch made. I was so excited to see local steak and an oxtail broth! The excitement ended very quickly. I took one sip of my broth and it tasted like I took a swig of soy sauce. A very watery hot soy sauce. I asked the waiter and he asked the chef and it turned out to be miso paste and soy sauce. Very very odd for a restaurant to claim clean and local ingredients only to have a broth that was soy and miso from a jar. Not a hint of beef flavor or broth. I was worried it could contain msg because some soy sauce does contain it. I asked the server if I could switch appetizers and he was very happy to and offered the broth to my girlfriend instead of tossing it out. She took a taste and said it was inedible. It was literally like a bowl of soy sauce. We also ordered the ribeye, they asked if we wanted it well done which I thought was a strange suggestion. We asked for medium rare. It arrived as a razor thin steak you would see at a crappy diner at a gas station. The steak was so well done it was almost jerky. Zero flavor, came with boiled carrots. There was a side of "chimichurri " which was clearly made of dried herbs and not fresh. We also had the tartar which was basically a raw ground beef hamburger patty. Zero flavor, no oil or seasoning. The meat had no flavor. We also ordered a bottle of wine for 70 bucks we saw at the grocery store for 15.00 lol Total bill was 250.00 for a dennys quality meal. HIGHLY RECOMMEND GOING TO THE GROCERY STORE DENNER AT THE END OF THE STREET. You can get wine for soooo cheap, good bottles. Also, the tap in Zermatt is amazing, some of the cleanest in the world. read more

Stockhorn Grill Restaurant is probably my most favorite restaurant in Switzerland. REALLY! I JUST SAID IT! WAM! I came here twice, once with my mother, once with my boyfriend. The chicken skewer marinated in sesame oil and ginger was the best chicken my mother had ever tasted... AND I HAD EVER TASTED! It actually fell apart in your mouth. It was so flavorful and delicious. I had never tasted chicken with that much flavor and with a perfect texture. It was so SO soft but somehow all the flavor didn't overpower it. It was perfect. The side of potato gratin was the best gratin I had ever tasted. To be honest, I dig the packaged stuff that you just add water (and maybe butter) to, but this kicked all other potato gratins out of the park. The combination of cheeses and perfectly cooked and sliced potatoes was phenomenal. And then there was the combo of meats on a skewer. Holy shiznit. There was bacon, and steak, and pork, and some type of sausage, and at least two pieces each (great for sharing). Holy hell I don't think I've tasted so many smokey- amazing flavors on one plate. It was absolutely delicious. The fondu was great, very rich and strong cheese. And the roesti was ok (kinda like hash browns). But I'm not a huge fan of roesti anyway. The service was wonderful, the decor is so sweet and traditional Swiss, cozy and beautiful. And the food. MAN YOU GOTTA TRY THE FOOD. read more

This is one of my favourites in Zermatt. Its a good idea to book a table in advance as it can get very busy (Christmas & New Year). I can certainly recommend anything from the open Grill but the chicken is a must. Again, you should ask for this when making your reservation. Wine choice is good and the service is excellent. Can be pricey but you do get plenty for your money. read more

We went to the Stockhorn restaurant a couple of times during a weekend in Zermatt. The grilled chicken and potato gratin were very tasty but sadly the waiter was really rude and unfriendly. When my friend said we wanted a couple of glasses of wine he simply responded "can you specify your wine order please" and walked off. A request for a fruit salad (not on the menu) was met with a similar obnoxious reply. While the food was great, we will not be returning. read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants and we never miss a chance to eat here whenever we are in Zermatt. In fact, this June we dined here twice. The first night we enjoyed Fondue Bourguignonne with never ending French Fries, accompanied by a liter of the ofen red wine. The second night we each had a starter of Raclette and a plate of grilled sausage with Rosti. Everything, except the Fondues, are grilled on an open fire in the front part of the restaurant. The open fire gives the restaurant a warm and cozy atmosphere, especially when it is cold outside. One of the specialties is a slow grilled chicken that must be ordered in advance, because it takes forever to cook. We didn't try the chicken, but we saw it cooked and served and it looked fantastic. The red meats are typical European cuts of lamb and beef that are fine, but not fantastic. We especially like the Fondues because they are meals that you don't ordinarily eat and this is the perfect place to enjoy them. Don't miss this experience. If you are only in Zermatt for one night, be sure to eat at the Stockhorn. If your are in Zermatt two nights, you might want to eat here twice. read more

We had a great dinner here after a lovely day in zermatt. I had the lamb chops which were perfect and my husband had the veal. Accompanied by polenta and as gratin potatoes - we shared all and a very nice Syrah. Lovely service and space. Highly recommend this charming restaurant. read more
