There's just something about the place; it has a great atmosphere. I've never been in at any time and found the place to be empty; there are always people in there browsing the large selection of books or reading the papers in the seating area in the middle. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and really know their stuff. The library is very child-friendly, with a great junior section at the far end, which my 7 year old daughter loves. We have spent many a happy hour in there browsing through the excellent collection of children's books. The only issue I have with this library is the entrance and exit doors, which are very stiff and heavy top open. I find it a struggle with a buggy so I'm sure for disabled visitors it must be almost impossible! I find this very strange in a council building, and hopefully they will get it sorted out with some automatic doors in the near future.

If you ask where a book is located, they will first see that it is in stock and then actually accompany you to the racks and pick it for you, showing you where there are others in the same category. They'll even point out any local events, talks, etc. that may be related to the book subject that you are enquiring about. Other libraries that I have been in have just said 'it's over there' but these people will really go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. A first-rate library.

There is a good range of newer books as well as older classics. In fact if you are visiting it is best to bring a large shopping bag for your books as you will visit to loan one book and leave with ten others that interest you just as much. The library is conveniently located close to bus routes. The staff are pleasant, but the librarians on the front desk are quick to remind you if you have chosen too many books.

Bedale library is an excellent library. It is not very big but has a huge range of books on offer…read more There is a lovely childrens area which is brightly decorated and appeals to children there are bean bags and little chairs as well as a computer and table and chair area for children who are doing homework. The library has a range of books for adults including a large selection of autobiographies, self help guides and story books. The library also includes a number of computers with internet access at a small price of around a pound per hour. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful.

They've never 'gone out of their way' to be helpful and just point out the general location when I've asked where a particular book is. When a particular book that I want is not in, they did not offer to reserve or order it in for me, just said that it wasn't in unlike other libraries that I have been too.

They always greet you with a smile and if they don't have the book you want they order it straight away. They show you where the books are that you want and tell you about local events coming up. It has a fabulous childrens section and adults section and also has a great referencing library. You can search for whatever books you want on computers so you don't have to wander along the shelves unless you want to. They have Dvds and audio books aswell and it is extremely cheap to join and get a library card so you can start borrowing. They have the latest released books and to make it fair have waiting lists for the most popular ones. So what are you waiting for? Get on down there and get borrowing.

The Library is also the home of Darlingtons Adult learning scheme that offers plenty of choice for adults of all backgrounds and abilities. It's a shinning Star in this old town.
