Compared to other Korean restaurants I've been to, this one offers less free appetizers and more expensive prices. I got the short rib soup - King Kalbi Tang. It came piping hot in a stone bowl so very glad it comes with a side of rice. It also has clear rice noodles. Portion size was good but the short rib wasn't very flavorful. We came here the other day because I was craving Korean food but did not have the time nor energy to make it. I have not been here before so we decided to try it out and see if it was worth it. I ordered the beef kulguksu and my wife ordered the bibimbap. I have kulguksu before but only when my mom would make it back in Korea. It took about 20 mins until the food was ready but when it was brought to us I could smell the flavor of the broth. It was extremely hot, so I had to wait a bit until I could eat it. My wife's bibimbap was also piping hot but hearing the rice crackle always brings back fond memories of my motherland. I was a little shocked that they did not provide banchan though. Banchan is the side dishes that are usually provided with each meal at Korean restaurants or houses for home cooked meals. I didn't ask why because it was pretty busy and I knew I would be full after all the soup. After my kulguksu cooled down a bit I was able to taste the savory beef broth. If you have never had this before, the noodles are usually hand rolled and have a more chewy texture. They are not sweet potato or ramen noodles, so they are able to absorb more of the flavor of the broth. There was beef, cabbage and onion all cooked in the broth that just was a happy medley of deliciousness. I am not going to talk much about the bibimbap because while my wife said it was really good, it was pretty much the norm for bibimbap. I will say however that the kulguksu was as good as my mom's, if not better. So, I will definitely be back for that--I just wish they offered banchan too. read more

I'm always skeptical of pan Asian menus, ans Korean restaurants that try to encompass the grand diversity of Korean cuisine. In the Korean neighborhood I used to live in Chicago, there were stone pot restaurants, noodle shops, barbecue restaurants, and cafes, each not just Korean but specializing in one genre of Korean food. I've yet to find a Korean restaurant that serves up both good Japanese and Korean dishes and it didn't happen here. Their stone bowl entrees are your best choice here, they are okay. The Japanese dishes, which my friends insisted on ordering, were not authentic and really not very good. If you're looking for Korean barbecue and you don't have time to go to the Korean suburb called Niles Illinois, you're better off at KPOT. One of my friends found a hair in her food here, but Im not convinced it wasn't her own hair. read more

As a Korean food enthusiast, I thought the food was pretty good. I got Yuk gae jang and Teokkbokki, both of which tasted good to me. Everything came out very fast and hot. As far as the banchans, that's where I felt they were lacking. The fish cake was hard which was disappointing and some of the other ones were not the best. As far as service, my waiter (Jai) was very kind and I enjoyed talking to him about music. At one point, my spoon fell on the ground and before I could even ask for a new one, he brought one to me. He also let me charge my phone in the back because I had a long drive home. He was very kind and thoughtful. The general ambiance was good too, nothing fancy but not dingy either. Stone bowl has always been on my list especially after trying a few other Korean restaurants in town, Maru, Char'd and merge(which is now closed). When I walked in, the waiter was sitting down at a distance from me with a straight face, I said a table for two to break the silence. The restaurant was half empty. The interior was quite dark so I wanted to sit at the booth near the windows, but the waiter said they were saving the table for larger groups. Which was reasonable, but he looked as if I owed him money. My friend arrived a few minutes later. Banchans were served, the flavors were quite standard, but one of the pickled vegetables tasted a little old. We ordered bibimbap with tofu and barbecue pork belly. The tofus on the bibimbap came as if they were cut straight from a box, shining, white with no seasoning. Maybe I shouldn't have expected them to be pan fried or marinated in some way. I was slightly disappointed that the egg is fully cooked, because I usually preferred the yolk to be a little runny. Without the sauce the dish would be absolutely bland. I should give them credit that the stone bowl was heated properly and the rice was charred on the bottom. When we were about to leave the restaurant, there were still a few empty booths... Overall, the food wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. Given the overall experience, I would choose other options in town. read more

Stone Bowl is always a hit for my fiancé and I. The recent snow fall hit the east side and after a day of work and snow removal, we were in the mood for something warm and comforting. A pot of spicy ramen and bouncy, stir fried udon noodles with plenty of veggies were just what we needed to warm up. Service is warm, attentive, and quick. One of my sisters wanted to come & eat here for her birthday so we did. My whole family got beef bibimbaps (because they're just so yummy & filling). We also got 2 orders of dukboki (rice cakes) & 1 pah-jeon (scallion/veggie pancake) to share. They both taste great on their own, but pair wonderfully with the bibimbap! I remember this place used to be great. It's gone downhill for years. The owner is very nice and sweet but the quality of the food needs to change. I usually love Banchan at Korean restaurants, which are small side dishes however the ones served here were the worst I've ever had. They had a funky taste and no, it's not the fermentation. This place is great. We got a ridiculous amount of food but it all disappeared from the table. To start, they don't skimp on the banchan (although the kimchi was extra). We got the #9 and the #12 from the Korean barbecue menu. The #12 Yangnyeom Kalbi was the dish of the night (short rib marinated in pear sauce). It was flavorful and sweet. We also had the curry fries (just okay) and Dukboki (spicy rice cake and fish sauce). The dukboki was had just the right amount of heat. The server was kind and helpful. Dinner for six was a festival of flavor and fun for me and my family last week. We ordered 5 entrees and were stuffed when we left. All of the grilled proteins were delicious, and the process of making them at the table was great fun for the teens at the table. The discussion of the food and the grilling made the meal an entertainment in itself; no need to address screen time here! Got 2 soups for takeout per covid on a chilly December night. Hearty soups to warm you up, one spicy, and one not. The restaurant was manned by two young guys. I wouldn't say they're friendly, though not necessarily rude. Kinda felt like maybe family, who had to work cuz their parents made them? Since I've been calling a lot of restaurants lately to place an order, I've noticed how people don't have some basic principles in mind. I hate calling up places and talking to people that I don't know. The least a business establishment can do is answer the phone with, "hello, this is [insert name of business]. How can I help you?" Don't answer the phone saying "hello?", as though I'm a spam caller. I always feel silly asking them, "oh hey, are you guys [insert business name]?" Anyway, that was a side point, but a pet peeve of mine that I've developed of late. And it happened here too. On the phone, and in person when picking up the food and paying for it, I felt like I was talking to a guy who just hated being there, never greeted me or cracked a smile. I kind of understand... Growing up in an immigrant family, I remember having to do a lot of stuff for my parents that I didn't enjoy doing, like working for our home business during school days or weekends. Or having to translate really embarrassing stuff for your parents who can't really speak English. So I understand. Doesn't mean I enjoy being in the customer end of it. OK, all that ranting aside. The important thing: food. - kalbi-tang it's a clear beef broth soup with short rib pieces (about 3 LA kalbi strips) and dangmyun (clear glass noodles). The pro: + The broth was very hearty, flavorful and delicious!! The cons: +They added an egg in here, which is not traditional and kinda weird. + The cons of the dish were that the rib pieces should have been cleaned out better, as I kept having to spit out little tiny bone pieces. (I remember a celebrity Korean chef once say that you have to clean out the meat well for this not to happen - Baek Jong-won) +The noodles were not cooked. It like they put it in cold water to rehydrate, then just placed in the container with the hot soup. I think they were trying to avoid getting it overcooked for takeout orders, but it still needs a little cooking. - soon dubu spicy soup with soft tofu and proteins. We had the combination, at a higher spicy level. It did pack a punch, but didn't feel crazy spicy. And we could taste the pepper flake taste - I don't know how to explain it, Cooked well, the pepper flake should add spiciness but not be so detectable. And the beef in the dish looked like the long shredded beef that goes in the Yookgaejang dish. That's a trick I use when cooking at home, but a restaurant should not recycle ingredients like that. - banchan (little side dishes) some cucumbers, potato mash, and kimchi. Unlike the hearty and flavorful soups, the sides were on the bland side. I ended up opening my own kimchi to go with my kalbi-tang. I hope the review didn't sound too negative. I'd like to think I was trying to be more constructive than destructive, especially to the one out of two legit Korean restaurants in Milwaukee. It is really my wish to be able to recommend this place for some Korean food to my friends, rather having to tell them to forget it and go to Chicago. read more

This place feels so homey and authentic. The food was so so good and the staff was super friendly. Super stoked to have checked this place out for lunch. I went with the lunch special and chose spicy pork. And when they spicy, they mean spicy. Not like omg I can't eat this, but good flavorful heat that makes your nose run a little bit then you just keep putting more in your mouth.... Anyways. For 12 or 13 bucks it's absolutely a good deal. At first I wasn't sure it was enough food but by the end of it I was stuffed. Everything in the box tasted great and it came out fast. I felt like this place had so much more potential. We were greeted and seated right away and then we waited and waited. There is a sign up talking about how to be patient because they were short staffed etc but there is a difference in being short staffed and one of the waiters running his butt off while the other one could have been less interested in serving customers. We ordered a few items. The pork belly appetizer was only just ok because of the kimchi or cabbage served underneath it otherwise it was just cooked non seasoned pork belly. My sister got the bipambop (spelling) bowl and it just lacked seasoning and flavor. I got the dak chicken and it was good and spicy but just served with bland rice on the side, not extra sauces or anything. We had the waiter who didn't seem interested in being there, he set down "sides" which were 4 small dishes with food items. As he was explained the sides at one point he set one down and said "I literally don't know what that one is." Well for anyone who wants to know it was just cooked cold squash. Just very underwhelming and they didn't act like they really even wanted any business. I just really can't see myself going back nor would I recommend this place. read more

I was extremely excited to try this place, especially because I am a huge fan of all types of Asian food. I ended up disappointed with what I ordered. Spicy Pork Bimimbap 2/5 Beautiful presentation - super colorful and well put together. It sizzles when It comes out in the stone bowl, however it looks way better than it tastes. It had no flavor whatsoever. The only real flavor in the dish was the marinated pork, of which there were fewer pieces than I thought would be. I literally doused everything in the bimimbap chili sauce they provide. I couldn't get myself to finish it or take home the leftovers. I've been here with my son several times. This place has great food . The kimchi fries are amazing. Normally I go for the Beef Bibimbop that really good. Today I went for the Spicy beef ramen it was very tasty so full of flavor. My son had the Bulgogi with white rice he loved it. We keep going back. My only compliant would be the spicy pork in the bimimbap The meat was cold or lukewarm surrounded by the hot stone bowl. Rarely have I experienced service so openly rude and immature. My wife and I arrived just before 2:00pm (the establishment closes at 2:30pm, then reopens at 4:30pm) but, nonetheless, there were two booths filled with customers. A delivery semi-truck trailer had arrived and burly guys were unloading what appeared to be a new double-wide commercial refrigerator, and heading for the propped-open front door. We step in and an employee attempts to seat us at a small table by the open door. We observe a few empty booths just a few feet away, further into the restaurant and, with the cool air blowing in through the open door, my wife asks for one of the booths, The guy replies, "there's a dog back there," and places our cutlery at the little table. I look back past the two parties of people seated in booths and see nothing, so I walk back and check it out. No dog. So I return and tell him that there's no dog and that we'll take a booth, and he says, "we're closing in a half and hour." My wife acknowledges this fact, and we begin to head back and, suddenly, he shouts, "No!" Then he screams, "we're closing in half an hour!" I tell him that we know this, but would rather not sit in the cool air. And he says: "You have two choices, sit there or leave." We left. And here's the thing. Clearly, he didn't want to serve us. But rather than fabricate some childish lie about a dog, or shout about the impending closure, why not just say "we're closed," and apologize. I'll never go back. read more

I've been a few times but my review is probably going to be most influenced by my last visit a few days ago. It was a perfect combination of comforting food and friendly service on a sort of cold night when I was still battling a cold. But I would say it wasn't unusual compared to my other visits. It kind of reminded me that I should go more often, if for no other reason than that Korean food is awesome and not exactly plentiful in Milwaukee. On my last visit I had an order of mandoo and the soon dubu with kimchi. And yes, I did eat it all by myself, because the cold I had made me absolutely ravenous all the time and I just went with it because I figured I needed the calories to get better. I went with the soon dubu with kimchi for the same reason. Soon dubu is such comfort food, and spicy. And kimchi has probiotics, besides being delicious. And the mandoo just sounded delicious, which they were. I got them steamed, but the fried ones are probably good too. My waiter let me know right away that my banchan were refillable. He and the other waitstaff were attentive and made sure that they and my water glass got refilled when needed. He mentioned that his favorite was the potato salad. And I did like the potato salad--it's a little bit like American mustard potato salad, but less mayonnaise-y and with another flavor I can't quite pin down. But my favorite is the spicy marinated bean sprouts. So after I finished my meal he asked me if I'd been in before and what dishes I'd had. I've had the seafood spicy ramen and the squid bibimbap. The ramen might be my favorite. But he suggested I try the kimchi cheese bibimbap next time. I might be a little hesitant about cheese on Asian food, in general. But it could be interesting too. So I might try it. I think Stone Bowl does a good job of catering to people with varying comfort levels with Korean food, which is a good niche to be in in Milwaukee. read more
