I recently switched to Candlewood when my boyfriend proposed to me. My fiancé was committed to serving this church. Since we were engaged, I knew that we would be getting married and would both need the same church home, so I started going to Candlewood with him and felt very welcomed. The Candlewood website is absolutely amazing (my now husband is on the website development team for the church) http://www.candlewoodchurch.org/. He also plays the drums in one of the worship bands. I love watching him play Sunday morning and seeing his heart for God and the joy he has while serving. We then started premarital counseling with the pastor and his wife. It was a great time to get to know them since I was still pretty new to the church, and for them to get to know us better. Through marriage counseling, we didn't experience any surprises or things we didn't know about each other. Going through it was helpful because it reassured my fiancé and I that we were really meant to be. Some of the topics were, the meaning of marriage, in-laws, emotional temperament, children, finances, etc. In that time, we also joined a couples lifegroup, which is just a group of 5-8 couples who get together every other week outside of church. We have done numerous things with our lifegroup: bible study, BBQ, movie nights, Polish Festival, CWS, outreaching events, etc. In the transition to Candlewood, I have felt very welcomed. I know that this church is a Christ centered church dedicated to serving the Lord and doing His will. They have a solid children's ministry, talented praise bands, pastors who speak truth, friendly attendees, and Panera bagels and pastries served with coffee before every church service. I would recommend Candlewood to anyone in the Omaha-Metro area seeking a church home.

While at CCC, I was forced into the brutal/unchosen lifelong sentence of celibacy, void of romantic love and touch forever (something that hetero church leadership/members will never attempt or fully comprehend the hopelessness of). I began my lifelong journey void of romantic love and touch at age 18. I was also encouraged by CCC leaders to take gay "conversion therapy" where my therapist told me to "keep things quiet" since conversion therapy was illegal in most states (today it's illegal in ALL states) because it is "strongly discouraged" by the APA (American Psychology Association) due to its harmful affects and common association with suicide. Google it. Looking back, I find it reckless that my therapists and CCC leaders would disregard the APA's "strong discouragement" of this technique and practice it on children. I could not even look people in the eyes while I was taking this therapy and over time became increasingly withdrawn and isolated (but constantly redirected back to it). As an adult, this really upsets me looking back at it. Once, I remember a bill was proposed by local politicians (The Ben Grey Act) that was designed to protect gay people in the Omaha workplace from being unjustly fired for their sexuality alone (NOT work ethic). Special workplace protections were already in place for race, age, gender, religion, and disability. So what did the leaders at CCC do? They pass around a petition to it's 3,000 members during a service to ensure that this bill wouldn't be passed - citing that businesses should have the religious right to fire gay people based on their sexualities (not work ethic). How sick, unloving and cruel. What a horrible message to send these wonderful people that you are called to love. It was in moments like this that it became crystal clear to me that the leadership/members at CCC saw gay people as second-rate humans. Heteros will never know the dehumanizing pain this inflicts on a young mind. And this is a great example of the treatment that a gay adult will need to constantly cope with when they are in the care of anti-gay leaders that are ill-equipped to care for gay people. Over the years, my experiences at CCC have come up often with various therapists... which they would often follow with a gasp, and then visible anger. I've seen 4 different licensed therapists since I was at CCC. ALL of them confirmed that my time at CCC was very abusive. So, finally when I was 24, after spending my entire life loyally fighting off my homosexuality and trying my hardest to fit into a community and an ideology that I couldn't, I began to break at the seams and broke down and went to a gay bar and kissed a boy. Afterwards, my roommate told on me and I was immediately fired and forced out of CCC. I was escorted off the church premises that day like a stranger. This was my entire network of friends and relationships... my family... As I was escorted off, I couldn't help but think of all of the Christian men that I interacted with everyday that were regularly partaking in masturb*tion, porn*graphy, gluttony/obesity, gossip, drunkenness, live-in partners, divorce, etc... so why could all of these people stay, but I had to go? The load I was carrying was SIGNIFICANTLY heavier than theirs. Pure hypocrisy and abuse. As l've gotten older, l've become uncomfortably aware of how common this abuse towards gay people is in these churches. The rejection, the stigmatization, the inhumane lifelong/loveless lives, people always viewing you as "a project" and the unbearable emotional isolation... and how often that abuse leads to suicide. I have SO much more to say but am out of room. I invite anyone that reads this to contemplate my words/tone before judging. This is one of the, if not the, best church I've been to in Omaha. It looks more like a warehouse…read morethan a place of worship, but there's a warmth that the people inside add that overcomes the lack of aesthetics. It's a contemporary church, so the worship music is upbeat and features songs you hear on radio stations like K-Love and 101.1. It's a very welcoming church, and casual attire is absolutely allowed. There are greeters at the doors, and it's common for the pastors to remain in the hallway long after the service just waiting to chat. Most importantly, the church really focuses its messages around having a relationship with Jesus Christ and how much love He has for us. I leave each Sunday feeling inspired and better prepared for the coming week than when I entered. Services are about an hour and 10 minutes long, starting at either 9 AM or 10:45 AM. If you're searching for a friendly, inclusive, Scripture-based church that is centered on Christ, this is a place worth checking out.

From the upbeat music to the interesting sermons, even the most church skeptic person would love it here! There are two main pastors that are both very real and transparent. They teach from the Bible, but make it interesting including everyday life applications. The people are friendly and consist of all age groups and walks of life. Citylight started out in someone's living room and quickly outgrew that to a small church building, then soon moved to a bigger space yet. They've been around for eight or so years, and have actually sent people out to plant several new churches in the Omaha area, as well as Lincoln, Kansas City, Colorado, and plans for more! If you're looking for a new church, or just a change for a week, Citylight Church is the place to go!

We've struggled with feeling welcomed or even noticed at other places, but the congregation at Glad Tidings continues to go above and beyond. We're not even complete regulars! Definitely a spiritual atmosphere and general attitude that's very positive and uplifting without being feel-good. As we get more involved, this could become a five star. This is just from the viewpoint of an on-off visitor over the course of ~10 years or so. Great place, highly recommended for anyone healthy in the spirit or in the need of healing.
