This is a beautiful memorial created in memory of those who truly deserve it. This architectural marvel sits just off of the roadway and features many tributes to fallen soldiers. We stopped here to read the memorials and enjoy the hard work of those who created this. We ended up staying much longer than anticipated because of the beauty of the memorial itself and the peace that we felt walking through it. It should be a must do for anyone coming through this area. Interesting bit of history in an unusual place. Inspiring to see the "stone walls", they look to be an early concrete mold. Created in early 1900s as a tribute to WW1 soldiers from the Golden Valley WA area. There is also a site of other wars with soldiers for The area. It's easy to stop here for the view. If that's all you see, you've missed it. This replica of Stonehenge wasn't built for spectacle. Sam Hill raised it as a World War I memorial, & once you stand in the middle, that warmth settles in. It's not grand for the sake of scale. It's open & quiet in a way that asks you to take a minute. His crypt is nearby, facing the might Columbia River, like he knew exactly what kind of legacy he wanted to leave. The overlook is striking, but it's the intention behind the build that stays with you. This is quite the little spot just outside of the Columbia River Crossing into Biggs. When you come out of the hills, just after leaving Goldendale, you come to an intersection where you can either turn right, and head down the Washington side of the canyon, or turn left and head over the bridge. If you go just past that Bridge turn off, the Stonehenge Memorial is up approximately a half mile on the right. It's down a little bit of a road, but much of a detour and is a neat site, especially on a nice day. There's a very nice placard that describes the sentiment behind the structure. It was a memorial for those who gave their lives in World War I. While it's not particularly ornate, it's a really neat replica structure of the original Stonehenge, and definitely has some good meaning behind it. A nice day, you can see the river had, look up into the hills, a great reminder of what a beautiful part of the country we live in. Well worth a stop be at for five minutes or an hour! read more

What in the Sam Hill is going on here?! Is this how the original Stonehenge would appear, if it were intact? The designers would have you think so, and having been to see the original, I concur, although the Washington iteration feels larger than its predecessor, but then again, tourists are not allowed to get this close to the one at Salisbury. Either way, it is an impressive and imposing structure, erected in honor of the fourteen men of Klickitat county who served and died in World War I, and has stood for nearly a century. Situated upon a picturesque bluff overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, this monument is definitely worth at least a brief stop to take in the breaktaking views, pay respects to the fallen, and appreciate the dedication, magnamity and ingenuity of mankind, both past and present. Even if you never make it to England to see the original, know that Sam Hill's recreation of one of humanity most ancient sites is no less impressive by comparison because it was made with modern materials and techniques: it absolutely captures the essence of the mysterious, the unknowable, and the evanescent nature of life and the universe as well as its fractured forebear. read more

The Maryhill Stonehenge -- built by Sam Hill -- was supposed to be a monument to peace, a remembrance of WWI soldiers, but the geometry he used and the bluff he chose are ancient points of convergence. That land remembers. But they layered it with false memory, just like they did to the original cornerstones of so many "institutions" -- including the Headwige / Head Witch / Capitol Hill system. This is not really a place I would drive specifically here for, or come back to, but if you're driving out to eastern Washington, and it's sort of along the way anyway, make a pit stop to visit this memorial and life size replica of Stonehenge. The views are great both towards Portland and the other direction towards Eastern WA. This is maybe a 10min stop. No restrooms, shade, or touristy gift shop, just a bunch of rocks. But you are now in the high desert, so more sunshine and drier weather in this half of the state makes for better views of the Columbia gorge. read more

If you are visiting the wineries or taking a drive along the WA side of the Columbia Gorge, definitely stop at Stonehenge Memorial. It's a full scale replica of Stonehenge in London but with all the pillars in tact. Designed by Samuel Hill, this was created as a memorial to honor WWI solders and sailors from Klickitat County who died in combat. It sits on a large piece of land overlooking the Columbia River with expansive views east and west plus the cliffs and windmills to the north. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Hood. There is a huge parking lot so if you are in an RUV, there is plenty of room to pull in and out. When the weather is rainy in Portland, and even in White Salmon, when you drive further east it's high desert so typically you will have sunshine and brilliant blue skies, the perfect backdrop to the columns. Fantastic photo ops and just fun to walk around, look at the shadows, read the plaques and pay tribute to these fallen heroes. The day I was there, lots of couples and kids were frolicking around. It is dog friendly and free! If you continue down the hill towards the river (or beach area) stop at Gunkle Farm Stand for fresh fruit and produce, when they are open. There's a charming church established in 1888 and an old gas station on the same road. While it could be your destination, I would make many stops along the way. If you are coming from Portland, stop at the White Salmon bakery for pastries and sandwiches and have a picnic once you get to Stonehenge. along the way stop at Cascade Cliffs Winery for the best Barbera. You are welcome! Continue on until you arrive at Maryhill Winery and enjoy a tasting on their beautiful patio with more panoramic views of the vineyards and river. Then drive up to hit up Stonehenge, have your picnic. Get fruit at Gunkle Farm Stand and then go back up to highway 14 and continue 3 miles east to The Maryhill Museum of Art, a fabulous museum. Then go to the town of Maryhill. In the spring when everything is green, it's a very zen and calming ride. But it is beautiful in all seasons and weather. read more

This is an amazing tribute to veterans alive or dead. You will get views you can't get anywhere else in the area. Dog friendly & easy turn around for RVs. Let your kids stretch their legs & burn off some energy. This is very much worth the few miles off the interstate to see. Have a picnic, because visiting this site is free. There are NO restrooms. This isn't a fancy place, but it never was intended to be. It's a very unusual war memorial. This was the most unique/unusual thing we saw while traveling the interstate. I love visiting the Stonehenge Memorial because it's one of those perfect Sunday afternoon "let's take an impromptu road trip" kind of destinations. The weather out in that part of the state is usually better than Portland, the Columbia River Gorge is gorgeous, and sunsets from Stonehenge are stunning. I've watched meteor showers from the parking lot, sunsets, I've picnicked there, and I've shared it with friends visiting from out of town. It really is an unusual tourist attraction in a really beautiful setting; certainly worth visiting! If you're looking for additional activities in the area, go for a drive to Centerville 17 miles away, then follow Dalles Mountain Road over the wall of the Gorge back to Hwy 14. It's a gravel road with beautiful views as you drive back to the river. The whole trip takes about an hour. Check out the wind turbines while you're at it. We really are lucky to live in such a beautiful region. read more

What a twisted place this is. A full-scale replica of Stonehenge in the Columbia River Gorge? Oh hell yeah. How could you not visit? It's one of those twisted, quirky destinations that make road trips so much fun. If you ever find yourself driving along I-84 east, past The Dalles, be sure to cross over into Washington to give it a look. It's only a mile or two off of the freeway. When I say full scale replica of Stonehenge, by the way, I don't mean Stonehenge the "ruin". I mean fully in tact Stonehenge as it was designed. Not the ruin, that is. But with all the pieces assembled. But wait! It's even more twisted. This is a WWI memorial as well. So some of the giant pillars have plaques commemorating local causalties in "The Great War". It's got to be the most unusual WWI memorial in the world. The view of the Columbia River Gorge from here is worth the drive itself. It's way up high on cliffs overlooking the river. We decided to go for a drive in the gorge along the Columbia River. We took a detour and drove to Goldendale, WA, then to Maryhill to see the Stonehenge Memorial and the Maryhill winery. Such a beautiful drive. The scenery is gorgeous, with various terrains. The Stonehenge Memorial is a great stop! I would highly recommend. It was built by Samuel Hill and dedicated in 1918 to WWI soldiers and sailors from Klickitat County who died in battle. The views of the gorge are breathtaking. There are a couple of signs from the main highway (HWY14) to help you get there. The parking lot is quite large, but be aware, there are no bathroom facilities. It's open daily from 7am-dusk and it's free admission! After visiting Stonehenge, I would suggest going down to the orchards and fruit stand below. Great variety and prices on produce...and they have various ice-cream bars for sale too! read more

We were super excited to discover this hidden gem! We homeschool and while learning about Ancient Civilizations we learned that this Stonehenge replica that was only a four hour drive from home! Obviously we were not able to jump on a plane and see the real one out in the UK, but I was very happy to be able to show my little ones this copy of history. This is located right on the border of Washington and Oregon. Besides the view of the Stonehenge there is also beautiful views all around the area! To get there it helps to type "Stonehenge WWI Memorial" into your Google Maps. It is an open outdoor area that does not require payment to enter. You just drive up and park. You are able to walk all around the structure and it is easy to keep distance from other visitors. We visited on November 16, 2020 and it was open even with the added COVID restrictions. It doesn't look like an area that would close due to COVID (it is all outdoors, in a large space, with no main entrance/exit area and no staff on site), but can't be sure that it won't close in the future. It is really worth the trip if you happen to be studying the history or are just a fan of site seeing interesting things in the area. read more

Beautiful structure hidden on a picturesque hillside overlooking the Columbia River George! It's a exact scale replica of the original, designed as a War memorial by the same person who built the Peace Arch on the Washington/Canadian Border. This place has been here since Sam Hill... 100 years or so. Great views up and down river and the structure itself is very photogenic. I've been stopping here several times a year for well over three decades. It's a popular tourist stop so getting pictures sans people can take some patience. There's also a War memorial close by dedicated to locals who were killed in service of America from WWI on to the present day. There used to be a gift shop there but it's been closed for at least 20 years. If you stop at Stonehenge be sure to also head down the hill to the semi-ghost town of Maryhill, Washington which is also very photogenic. And the Gunkle fruit stands, open in season. read more

This was a surprise. I've heard about the Stonehenge recreation at Maryhill but did not know the back story until I visited it. It's actually a war memorial with pacifist overtones. Sam Hill was a Quaker. He knew Stonehenge had been the site of pagan rituals and so he chose that as a means to make a comment on his view of war whilst honoring those from Klickitat County who died in WW1. The memorial is not a precise replication of Stonehenge. It's made of cement and has a gravel base. But still, the memorial offers unique views of the Gorge and honors those in WW1. There now is another memorial near-by that honors local men who died in WW2, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East. It never ends. read more

I've been here multiple times during all types of weather because it's a fantastic subject to photograph. I see that there is a closing time for the monument now, so I'm not sure if people are allowed to photograph it at 3am with the Milky Way hanging above it in all its splendor and snow making the landscape glow with starlight. Hopefully photographers can still do that. I was just there again a few weeks ago after not visiting for years. I see that it's now a state park with a little ranger hut. That's a good thing I assume, probably cuts down on vandalism. It's a beautiful monument to the local fallen during WWI by a man who truly loved his people. Don't miss it if you're passing through. It's an unexpected wonder in the middle of nowhere that will surely stand the test of time. read more

Visited here recently with the wife! We have been reading about this place for a long time and decided to take a little Road Trip out there. It was a short drive from Portland and then crossing over to the Vancouver Side. The drive from the Oregon side was very scenic. You get a view of the Gorge and Columbia River. The drive up is winding and narrow, so proceed with caution. Once at the top there is a dirt road and area for parking. The are is spacious and gives a great view of the Columbia Gorge/ River from the Washington side. Additionally, there is a small trail that goes down for a bit that gives you a great view from the top of the hill overlooking the Columbia River. This was a great spot to take some pictures. You can walk right in and up to the Stonehenge. The structure is very unique and interesting when viewing from inside. I highly recommend visiting here at least once for the beautiful scenery and architecture. read more

I actually verified this is the actually location. The Yelp app gave the street address between 41 to 199 Stonehenge but if you type 41 in your GPS you should be able to see it or at least follow the signs. This Memorial is kind of an oddity, but it's beautifully crafted as a memorial to fallen soldiers from World War I, specifically soldiers from Klickitat County. I was very surprised that the majority of the placards on the walls of the huge stones had the names of the fallen servicemen that most were below the age of 21. I think that this site is a very touching memorial to those that have passed on fighting the good fight so that we can be the nation that we are. On a different note, there is a breathtaking view of the Columbia River. I mean, utterly breathtaking. Take your time to enjoy the whole site. There is also a smaller memorial in the same park that is designed to honor soldiers from WWII, Vietnam, & Korea from Klickitat County, so check that out too. The altar stone is strategically placed to be align with the sunrise on the summer solstice. The monument was originally located in Maryhill, site of the 1st paved roads in the Pacific Northwest, which the town burned down leaving only the Stonehenge replica. read more

If you are driving along the Washington shore of the Columbia river, this memorial is worth a quick stop. It's easy to find and follow the signs. You can park for free right in front of the monument. It's free to see. The monument memorializes soldiers that served our country in WW1. I find the set up of the memorial quite powerful but it doesn't really resemble Stonehenge (I have been to Stonehenge) , it's more of a stone ring of connected perfectly rectangular blocks. You can tell they were manufactured in modern times. As opposed to Stonehenge, you can walk in between the stones. The monument is located on a bluff high above the river and I'm sure the view is beautiful when there are no fires. Unfortunately the day we visited, thick smoke obscured the view and we felt like standing in foul smelling fog. read more

This stonehenge is a memorial for those lost in World War I by entrepreneur Sam Hill. He built what is now the Maryhill Museum and connected his stonehenge to it by a road. Some relatives served in that war and I'm glad they were not lost, or I would not be here. It's a recreation of the UK stone Stonehenge as it might have existed originally and complete, in concrete. That gives it sharp precise edges. The earliest structures on the UK Stonehenge site were wood and the partially surviving stone Stonehenge dates to pre-recorded history. How were those large British stones hewn and raised even before Julius Caesar subdued the Gauls, or thought he did? What is impressive is that Hill consulted with archeologists and scientists in recreating the monument. Because it's in a different latitude and longitude, it doesn't recreate the exact same early astronomical shadows, but it's impressive. And he used innovative concrete forming to create the effect of rough hewn stone. There is plenty of parking and it's a popular stop in the area. The Stonehenge replica at Maryhill, WA, USA is perhaps the only full scale replica in existence. It is constructed of concrete, not natural stone, but that works for me. The altar was dedicated on July 4, 1918 to WW I soldiers who died in battle. The remainder of the monument was finished a few years later. It was constructed by James J. Hill, a wealthy railroader from the 19th century. He also built an amazing manor house for his wife at Maryhill. The manor house is now an art museum you should go see too. The Stonehenge replica is now officially a Veterans Memorial for Klickitat County war dead. Admission is free. The energy is awesome. It is not crowded. I was the only person there when I arrived on a Thursday about mid day. If you are traveling I-84 east of Portland, OR, turn off at Biggs Junction. Its only a few miles across the bridge and up a hill on the WA side of the Columbia river. Its well worth the extra time to see and feel the stones. Yesterday we took the scenic drive to Goldendale. Amazing view, clean, open and peaceful. We arrived midday and due to earlier rain just a few hours prior it was pretty much empty. Dirty road at location, driveway in need of repair and parking is not marked well. Good thing not too many visitors. It did have 2 porta potty along side road next to parking. The information store in front was closed. It did have a small covered information booth. I was not aware of additional memorial located after store on right hand side. It was a bonus to our trip. I just love seeing the community paying respect for the fallen. If you are bringing smaller children please take in account it is located on a hill without any fences. View of the Gorge, energy windmills and local farms are stunning. Beautiful wildflowers all around the location. I walked a little ways down towards hillside with view of the Gorge. It was a beautiful day to ride. We visited the Stonehenge Memorial, which is about an hour and a half away from Yakima along Hwy 14 along the Columbia River Gorge, as an unplanned trip. It's also 3 miles down the road from the Maryhill Museum. It's the same size and specifications as the original. It was built in the early 1900's to commemorate those 14 soldiers of Klickitat County who perished during WWI while fighting for our freedom. Samuel Hill, who built this monument visited Stonehenge in England during WWI, was told it was built for human sacrifices to the Pagan Gods. He gained the inspiration to build this monument -- "After all our civilization, the flower of humanity still is being sacrificed to the god of war on fields of battle." Today the sacrifice legend is generally discredited. Current belief is Stonehenge was a device used by stone-aged astromers to measure time and mark seasons of the year by observing positions of the sun and moon. As an added advice, we came here on a Harley Electra Glide, which is a heavy bike. You will most likely experience heavy crosswinds so be prepared. Goldendale, the town this memorial is located in is out in the middle of nowhere. There aren't big signs pointing you to its location. There are exactly two road signs letting you know this place exists -- one about a mile away and the other letting you know which road to turn into. It's free and the hours are from 7am to dusk. There's plenty of areas to park and no bathroom facilities available. If you are one that can appreciate the history and surrounding beauty of things, this is a must-see and highly recommended. read more

I found some postcards for this place over in Vancouver right after moving to Washington. I have been to the real Stonehenge and am very intrigued by it. So when my first visitors came we made a beeline to this spot. This replica has been made to scale. It's so cool to get to walk right up to the site and inside the memorial. It is very well built and situated right on a cliff near the river. A spectacular view. It looked like they have a small souvenir store, but it looked like it hadn't been open in years. -- If wine tasting interests you, you can drive further down the hill and take a right towards the fruit stands.
