The thing that concerns me is the actual facility and the secretary at the front desk Ms. Barnes. First of all there is no reason why I should smell urine walking down the halls. That is absolutely disgusting. When you go into the bathrooms they don't even have soap. I volunteered one day and I watched as the teacher gave them sanitizer as they were walking out of the bathroom. Just sanitizer on those germy little hands leaving out of a bathroom that already smells like pee that's been sitting for years. Now Ms. Barnes , without going into full detail her attitude sucks. If your not happy at the front desk someone else will love your job, move on and save some of us parents the despair of having to see your face or speak to you. My daughter will not be finishing at Marbut, despite being a theme school I believe there should be more clubs for kids k-3 as well. They got a new principle so hopefully he will make the necessary changes. Really this review deserves 2 stars but because I love the teachers which is most important I will give 3 stars since I am the first to review. UPDATE- The new principal did make many changes at the school. My daughter is no longer there and I did see changes in the front desks professionalism.

As a former teacher of The Academy of Scholars for several years, I am saddened to read some of the…read morenegative and false reviews of the school and their current Chief Learning Officer, Ms. Stacy Lambert-Johnson. As a veteran teacher of the school, I know that the entire administration treats all of their employees with nothing but kindness and respect. The school provides an outstanding education for families in Atlanta's surrounding communities. Like most private schools, they hold their staff to very high standards, but nonetheless standards that are achievable for teachers who are passionate, present, hardworking, and truly want to teach. From what I have witnessed, they believe teachers should educate their students because it is their passion. I can imagine that as a prospective parent, you would want nothing less. Ms. Lambert-Johnson and the rest of the administration work harder than any other team I have had the privilege of working with. They take pride in the school and believe that all of their children deserve a quality education. They are genuinely involved with their staff's well-being and want nothing but the best for all of the individuals that they connect with each day. Ms. Lambert- Johnson and the administration take the time and effort to get to know each employee and honor their beliefs, philosophies, and interests. If teachers have a suggestion, they are receptive and respectful to their ideas. If they have been stern with an employee or given a consequence, it is because that employee's actions were not in the best interest of the child. Like all great places of work, the administration's prerogative is simple - do your job well because the families we work for deserve it. I believe that these negative reviews are a reflection of one disgruntled employee's feelings, and it is so disappointing that an educator would feel the need to degrade someone who gives their heart and soul to the school and all of the people who belong to it. I am proud to be a former teacher of the Academy of Scholars and would highly recommend it to fellow educators and families. Our initial decision to send her there was because we wanted a full Pre-K program and the children were exposed to coding, Spanish, bible class, etc. Pre-K was pretty good for us and our family. Kindergarten is the time that my daughter started experiencing some academic problems. It became very test and assessment heavy. However, her teacher was pretty good and we got through it with only a few hiccups. However, there were recommendations of what to do over the summer. However, we had her in Kumon all school year and even started with an additional in-person tutor. 1st grade was a disaster for various reasons. The expectations of the "scholars" became increased and elevated. My daughter seemed to be falling behind even though she was assessed and put in the advanced groups. 1st the ELA teacher for my daughter never showed back up to work a couple weeks into school. Her Kindergarten teacher (who had left) came back temporarily and things were going pretty well. Then at the end of the semester she left for good and multiple switches and transition with staff (not teachers) and teachers made it complicated. I met with teachers, head teachers and even the principal. I was not alone and several other parents did the same thing for their children. Nothing was done and no efforts were made to address any concerns. It was very stressful! The amount and levels of work the students had to do were way too much. At one point, there were four tests/quizzes a week on top of projects. Well once we got out of the school for 2nd grade, her ELA teacher immediately recognized that our daughter was having a harder time and recommmended we get her evaluated for learning differences. It turns out our daughter was dyslexic and it accounted for a lot of the issues we had encountered. It is not AOS' fault that our daughter was dyslexic, but I do hold the "educators" accountable for not being knowledgeable enough (with all the testing and work) to identify that may be a possibility. My honest suggestion is that if you have a gifted child that will thrive in any environment, this may be the school for you. However, if you want an environment with appropriate grade level work, knowledgeable educators and faculty and administrators that care about all students not just the top 10% of all children, choose a different school. My daughter was sad to leave because they do become like family. Loved that the staff knew her by name, smiled when she walked in and even gave hugs as she walked into the classrooms. This was the part I missed as a parent. However, she LOVES her new school and we are working on remediating her ELA skills with outside help as well as the protections of special education in public schools. I just wonder how her educational trajectory would have been different, if the educators at AOS would have been more knowledgeable about learning differences. I would have had to move her regardless, but she would have had less need for remediation with the right help at the beginning. Almost every parent/family we went to school there with have left for different reasons. I do not know if it is true, but some former parents believe the owners are only interested in the financial gains and not truly the education and cultivating a great educational staff. Oh and make sure you read the fine print about unenrolling! I know a family currently in litigation about having to pay a full year of tutition because they did not unenroll by the deadline, although their kids do not attend the school anymore.

The school facilities were pretty nice - walls decorated with school decorations and students' works. Very colorful setting that encouraged a safe space for learning. For a Saturday morning program, I was very impressed by the involvement and presence of the school administration. Teachers and the principal arrived on time, ready to engage with the students. Good teachers really don't get enough praise for their dedication. Students also arrived by school bus, which is a reliable and efficient way for students to get to a school program on the weekends - so cool! The thing that really topped it off for me was the diversity in the student population. The student body represents 31 different countries... yes THIRTY ONE countries. Most are children of refugees and come without an English background. You definitely would not be able to tell the latter because these kids were engaged throughout the program, displaying proficient in learning/comprehension. I am all for children growing up with diverse group of friends and learning cultural values early on in life. It's something that won't do harm in their future.
