I've never had a beer at Stoney's (but had good irish coffee) .... kind of weird, since they have good beers and I quite like me some beers. I've only been there for brunch and ate the same thing both times because it was that wonderful - french toast like WHOA! This is a huge helping, with plenty for leftovers. Hubs got his own order last time, so our leftovers combined to a whole serving. The next morning, I showed that toast what was up - stuffed it with with a cream cheese / sugar / walnuts mix and fried it right up. yummmmm In my mind, few things beat watching football on Saturday afternoon while eating french toast. Nevertheless, next time (and there WILL be next times), I want to get the eye-opener pizza. Maybe I'll even get a beer. read more

I disagree with the general community on this one. Greasy bar food - and extremely limited veggie options (no veggie burgers available at all here) save for the grilled cheese sandwich. Also? So imagine a sports bar, with TVs playing the mid day golf tournament, laid-back but acceptable service, and a wide array of sandwiches, salads, and burgers that are all reasonably good, but nothing jumps out and says, WOW! Everything you've heard is true: decent beer selection, decent prices, decent food. The grilled cheese is very safe, but very good. I can also vouch for the pizza. The ambiance is pretty standard for a sports/neighborhood bar, nothing to get excited about. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy but this is my favorite bar in town. The reason? Reliability. So many places in DC try to "be" something, get over crowded with preppy Gtowners, and cost a pretty penny just because it's not VA/MD. Not Stoney's. Everytime I've gone, it's reliably an enjoyable time. I have ALWAYS gotten a seat (even on Friday & Saturday nights - which is saying a lot in DC). Fun decor, great beer selection, personable and light-hearted staff, DELICIOUS grilled cheese sandwiches (as a veggie, I revel in the fact that the specialty is not overflowing with meat). Stoney's seems to be in a popular location, there were a lot of people out and about that evening. There was ample seating and lots of TVs. However, only one TV was dedicated to the NBA finals. That seemed rather odd. There is a second floor to Stoney's, but it wasn't open this night...and no one seemed to be able to tell us why. We had a group of 8 and had to leave to watch the finals elsewhere. I did try some food here. The menu boasts a list of items they are famous for, and none of those were recommended to me when I asked for input from our waitress. Another oddity if you ask me. If you're looking for a bar to just hang with friend, then Stoney's might work. I wouldn't go thinking you'd be able to find what yoy need on the TVs. read more

A total gem! After having no luck at restaurants near the 9:30 Club before a concert, we ventured out to the area and stumbled upon Stoney's. A little divey, it would be easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. They serve the best grilled cheese ever. If you feel like being a fatass, order it and you won't regret it. This place is cheap, has a wide array of beers and the waitstaff is attentive and friendly. The place sticks out a bit on P Street because it has a dive bar feel without actually being a dive bar. I've never been to the upstairs part of this place, and I haven't even entertained the idea, because downstairs has a better vibe and feels like a hometown bar. read more

Went there for casual drinks and to watch the game. Totally not what we got. Apparently there's a rule that if you don't order as soon as you arrive, the bartender has the right to remove your belongings and attempt to call the police on you. But, in my brief Stoney's encounter, I found: 1) great beer, 2) plenty of tables to be had, 3) cheap (for DC) prices, and 4) one mighty fine brownie sundae. I had flown into DC for a conference. My (almost 30yo) boy picked me up at DCA and, noting that I hadn't eaten, took me to Stoney near his place. We managed to get a 2-top i the window right away which was perfect for watching the Friday night scene off 14th street. I had a great burger with perfect fries and a green salad. So, after receiving no service at Halo on Saturday night, we strolled next door to Stoney's to wait for our friend, who's a manager at the P Street Whole Foods, to get off work and stroll across the street. We got a bar table pretty quickly once the completely trashed people were finished making out on it. It's your average bar food and cold beer joint. Not a destination place for me, but somewhere I'd go to meet a friend for a beer if I lived close by. The lights were brighter than most places and they didn't dim them until about midnight (maybe to aid people's beer goggles). A lot of people were smoking in there but they had one of those really good smoke-e-teers, so it wasn't bothersome. I had ten thousand Red Hook beers (because the Hefeweizen was tapped) and an order of wet fries that are French fries with brown gravy that's like the sauce on a Salisbury steak frozen dinner. The waitress was pretty cool and the atmosphere was pretty diverse. I think it's their new location. I know they were about to go out of business over the summer but rallied back. The sauce that comes with Stoney Burger is supposed to be awesome, but I was having beer for dinner. Nothing brilliant. Nothing bad. Good neighborhood joint. read more

I don't frequent the Logan Circle area often, so I've always heard of the infamous grilled cheese sandwiches at Stoney's, but only recently was able to experience it in person. The thick slices bread with ooey gooey melted cheese in between was delicious. Grilled cheese aren't difficult to make, but they mastered it at Stoney's. The draft beer list was also pretty decent. The crowd was really laid back and our waiter came to check on us often enough that we rarely had an empty pint glass in front of us. Stoney's is a solid neighborhood pub that does a good job with standard pub food at pub food prices. There's no pretense here -- just friendly service, quality burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches and a host of accompaniments to clog your arteries, like chili cheese fries, wet fries (with gravy) and fried calamari. I think you can get bacon on just about anything, too. The buns are particularly good -- buttery, light and fluffy. They have a diverse selection of beers on tap, and the prices are very reasonable. read more

It's refreshing to see a restaurant that serves just plain old buffalo wings - just buffalo wings, no mild/honey/hot/atomic/XXX or boneless varieties. And they're good wings, too, flavorful and spicy, but not so spicy that you taste buds are numbed. The reuben is pretty good, as are the cheesesteak and the burgers. The fries are great - again, they're your standard french fries, but they're just crispy enough and just the right cut. It would be better if they had a better craft beer selection, but as long as they keep Founders Centennial IPA and Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale on tap, I'll be satisfied. Wandered into this place around noon to grab brunch on a whim. Sat at the bar with the very absent bartender; he was at the bar, just not paying attention to the bar patrons. The place got packed rather quickly (by 12:30 pm, there were few tables left). Beer selection was surprisingly ok, based on the small number of taps, but they do have the macros, too, so this is not a destination bar. I enjoyed a Bells Porter and my husband had a Breckenridge IPA. I ordered the Greek omelet (spinach, feta, tomatoes). I think they used canned tomatoes, since my plate was had a decent amount of liquid below the omelet. The potatoes are cooked in peppers and onions, and they helped sop up the tomato juice after I was done my omelet. The husband ordered the Pastrami Delight. He loved it; it's the kind of sandwich you order in a bar like Stoney's. It had great flavor. FYI: Menu states clearly: NO SUBSTITUTIONS. We got the check rather quickly and had to wait about 10 minutes before the bartender even looked our way to take our credit card. The place is a good greasy spoon/dive bar. Good little spot for beers/bar food in an area that lacks that kind of outlet. Great Reuben...classic sandwhich done right. Texas Burger is dope, covered in BBQ sauce and coleslaw. And there's always the Super Grilled cheese, with bacon/onion/tomato on HUGE greasy texas toast. Draft beers are good/clean lines. I had a chance to stop by Stoney's this past Thursday around happy hour and I came here more for the eats than anything else. Overall I was very satisfied. Stoney's is known for their Grilled cheese sammiches but I was not in a G.C. mode so I ordered the grilled chicken and my goodness was that thing hitting. Most of their sandwiches on their menu comes with fries so you get that nice 2 for 1 thing going on. My sandwich was nice and tender along with a couple strips of bacon so you know I was pleased. Also besides their sandwiches Stoney's does have a nice selection of beers, I wouldn't describe it as outstanding on any level but they do have a hodgepodge of liquid courage. My visit was not complete until I tried as a lovely yelper called it their "amazing cornbread". The very nice bartender explained to me I must try it even though it usually comes with chili and on this day it was about 90 degrees out. Homey hooked me up with a slice and it was good, it had the consistency of cake than the cornbread you see in the movie "Life". It really made my day and I left there happy, so thanks for the advice and I will try the ham grilled cheese on texas toast, damn that sounds like fire! I'm only taking a point off for parking, meters in the area are good for an hour tops, next time I will park at the Whole Foods across the street, there it is free 99. read more

Great spot for reasonably priced food and drinks. Their grilled cheese is, of course, superb. You can get various toppings on your grilled cheese (bacon, tomato, etc.). It's made with thick bread toasted to perfection. I've also had the grilled tuna sandwich, and it was quite good. The tuna filet was very high quality, so I was glad I opted to have it prepared medium rare. Very flavorful and came with lettuce, tomato, and tarter sauce. They have great happy hour specials, and their drink prices in general are much cheaper than many of the bars nearby. read more

If you love comfort food, Stoney's is the place for you! Their sandwiches are delicious. Their grilled cheese sandwiches are by far the best in the city. Served with really crispy fries and on buttered toast, these sandwiches ooze with cheese. I'm a fan of the regular grilled cheese and my boyfriend loves the Super grilled cheese, with bacon, tomato, and onions added. They also have a great selection of draft beers. This place hands down is one of the best no frills bars in Washington, D.C. It can be hard to find a "chill" place to just come and enjoy a beer and some great bar food in a baseball cap and your t-shirt. You can come here alone or with friends, and expect to leave 100% satisfied. The wings (ask for extra crispy), burger and nachos are consistently delicious. The staff is friendly, accommodating and quick. Can't say enough great things about Shanika, when she is behind the bar Stoney's is the place to be. Not to mention ordering for pick-up is breeze and food is ready within 10 minutes on average. Stoney's is pub-away-from-home. The bartenders are wonderful and beer experts who make the effort to introduce new and great taps. The wait-staff are attentive and friendly, and the regulars make this place feel like there is a real community but not exclusive of others. The newly opened upstairs bar has addressed the occasional overcrowding, and has a wider selection of bottles to go along with the additional taps (as well as pool and shuffleboard). The kitchen is exceptional. First, they're open until 1:30 and there is not a better place to get food that late anywhere in the Dupont-Logan corridor. Second, the effort has always been made to make quality food: the Super Grilled Cheese raved about, their pizza use home-made dough which is almost sourdough in it flavor and texture, the Texas Burger (bacon, smoked cheddar, grilled onions, bbq sauce, cloe slaw) is as overwhelmingly wonderful, and the rest of the menu is just as solid. For my time & money, there is no better pub in DC. read more

After some friends decided to make this the bar of choice to celebrate their birthdays, I decided to come early before the drinking began to have a taste of what was in store. A friend and I split a decently priced pitcher, I ordered a burger with the special Stoney's sauce and my friend ordered a greek salad. The burger was outstanding, and the sauce was great too, a mix of fabulous flavors, leaving no need for ketchup or mustard. The french fries were the thinly cut, good, but not fabulous. Of course, I had to have a try of the greek salad my friend ordered. It was pretty good. It was a big serving of fresh ingredients and just the right amount of dressing. The night ended in the upstairs bar, with good beers and a nice atmosphere. Great bar for cheap good food and beer. Now I wish I had only tried the grilled cheese sandwich! read more

I went here to enjoy a brew with my buddy to watch the NCAA Championship. It looks like they have a good beer selection and I did enjoy a couple nice honey wheat beers. The ambiance feels like a good bar. It's a place I would like to frequent more often if I lived closer. The bartender was cool and gave me sample to check out. I just started working in the area and this has been a favorite go-to place for lunch! The times that we have been there, it hasn't been very crowded, but it can take awhile to get the check after you are finished. You pretty much have to flag down the server for it. Not that I mind sitting in a bar all afternoon though! The food is delish! The grilled cheese is definitely one of the best that I have had! It's a decent sized sandwich with a decent amount of cheese...think ooey gooey melting out the sides of the bread! There is enough cheese on it too, that when you get to the crust, you still have cheese left on your sandwich. The fries are decent too! The kind of remind me of fast food fries, but nonetheless are yummy! I have heard from my coworkers that the prices recently up, but I think I will still be coming here pretty regularly. read more

We checked into our hotel near Scott Circle and needed to find a place for lunch. All we really wanted was something simple and a few beers. A quick Yelp search that said they had local beers, sent us to Stoney's. Our bartender was very nice. (Though when we asked what brews were local he told us the Stoney's Amber was but the tapper clearly states it's really Michelob Amber with the Stoney's name on it.) My crab cake sandwich was very good. My wife very much enjoyed her chicken reuben. For a pub lunch with decent beers, good food and fair prices, it definitely met our expectations! read more

The beer selection is definitely nothing to write home about, and the crowd isn't either. It has a laid back vibe, with giant TVs, but seemingly no one watching them. Stoney's has my favorite food, so I may be biased, but I think it's a great spot - especially for families or a group who needs food before a night out. Tomato bisque & the Thunderbird sandwich (roasted turkey, melted gouda, thick-cut bacon, pepperoncini relish and chipotle mayo on sourdough bread). Just the right amount of spice in the chipotle mayo and everything else together is a slam dunk. I love it. I wish I could try the rest of their food, but I don't know if I could ever risk missing out on an opportunity to have this combo. A pub feel (almost diner-ish in a way). Known for having some of the best burgers in DC I had to give the burgers a shot. Picture normal bar like anywhere in the US... but smack in competition central with plenty of other places to compete. We had the Texas burger (bbq sauce, bacon, coleslaw) and the Special burger (can't remember the name - special sauce, pastrami, coleslaw. The burgers were cooked as we requested them. They were tasty, although really were nothing that blew my my mind. The poppy seed rolls were nice and soft, an ideal bun for a burger. The combination of flavors were good. The bacon was nice and crispy. The Texas burger was the one I enjoyed the most. The fries were fantastic. Single fired, piping hot skinny, but not fast food skinny, fries. The inside is fine and normal. The service perfectly fine, although three waitresses tried to take my plate as I waited for my companion to finish his food. I recognize it's a bar, but taking plates off the table when someone else is still eating is rude. I'd go back again for another stab. read more

I think I'm going to start a Thursday winter ritual of going here specifically for a grilled cheese and soup. It's the little things in life. I was super hungry after work and it's cold out and it occurred to me that I've lived in DC far too long to not have been to Stoney's before when they are rumored to have the some of the best grilled cheese in the district. It's a standard bar and has everything a standard bar should. Service was great. Staff were amicable and on point. I was in and out fairly quickly. They have a reasonable happy hour but prices are fine to begin with. The reviews on the grilled cheese are pretty on point too and man did their tomato soup/grilled cheese combo hit the spot. I love that they have several kinds so I opted for the multigrain with swiss, arugula and cherry tomatoes. YUM! read more
