According to the artist, Suzanne Gayle, the mural aims to encourage passersby to blend in with the art. It's certainly a great opportunity for photo ops, or just a little amusement for theatre-goers as they trek to and from the cinema along the alleyway off of B Street, near the theater entrance and box office, and adjacent to Rockit Char Grill. The paint is more cracked and faded toward the back end of the alley, but overall, the mural is in good condition (as of Jan 2024), and is a nice feature in this otherwise dull and uninspiring walkway.

If you've ever listened to Hayward city council meetings you quickly see how planning commissioners and city council members think. Planning commissioners are obsessed with art and investors often sweet talk them with their artistic visions. I'd love to see art because of a love for art. That is not what this is here. Its sort of like a person wearing expensive brands that are of cheap quality. All about an image and not about character. Hayward does try to improve things and they mean well. The council members are always listening and quick to give a call back. Downtown is their darling and luckily that is where I live - so my neighborhood gets all the attention. If you ever need help with sleeping - let me invite you to listen to Hayward city council meetings on Youtube. I love to watch the city manager and mayor in action.

It's working for me because I would've never known about this mural otherwise. In a city full of arresting public art, this one takes advantage of the retaining wall stairs at the end of Burnside Ave and artistically traces the history of Glen Park spotlighting neighborhood heroes and icons. The main facing wall depicts the evolving flora and fauna of the adjacent Glen Park Canyon. The Twin Walls Mural Company is responsible for the colorful mural, and the tile stairway reflects the uniquely stellar work of Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, the team responsible for the photogenically definitive SF stairway, the 16th Avenue Steps (review: https://yelp.to/sf6kW9Yg5_). Reclaiming Islais Creek is a beautiful mural with two main parts. Flowing from the top of the…read morestaircase like water, in a blue hue, is an engaging painting showcasing the history and people of Glen Park, the neighborhood in which this art piece is located. The other portion of the mural, along the wall at the bottom of the steps, portrays lovely colorful scenes in nature, representative of the land, with meaning behind individual creatures and plants shown in the artwork, such as the hummingbirds symbolizing the energy and spirit of the Glen Park community. The mosaic-tiled staircase, featuring legacy tiles, is a just as impressive element of this exhibit as a whole, and just recently opened last month (October 2024). Two flip charts are available on site, hanging from the staircase railing, one containing pictures and labels to help visitors identify the wildlife depicted in the mural, the other one sharing interesting details about the wonderful history of Glen Park and its residents, as shown through the art, including SF's first Americans, the Muwekma Ohlone, the first march for women's suffrage in America, Mission Zoo, railways, and noteworthy businesses. Great little read to learn about what you are seeing here. Also, street parking was free and easy right in front on a Sunday afternoon.

A recent event at the Chinese community Center during the Lunar New Year celebrating Asian Pacific Heritage Month & Black History Month is an example. the cultural event isn't an anomaly. thruout history. Asian & Black voices have unified for common causes: -the development of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley and USF SF State in the '60s, the FIRST in the nation. -Yuri Kochiyama was a confidante of Malcolm X. She comforted him when he was dying after an assassination succeeded. -Asian support during the George Floyd protests, Black support during the Atlanta spa killings to protest anti-Asian hate. listing Asian lst and Black 2nd wasn't a random choice. Asian and English literature is read from left to right. just following an established tradition. this Asian and Black Voices in Unity mural amplifies the common experiences of the Asian and Black communities-they have more in common than the petty differences pedaled by political forces that seek to divide them. btw: the note on the rollup door says the eatery is taking a short vacation.

This neighborhood has been home to me again now for almost a year and if you're an SF native like…read moreme, you might like this neighborhood more than other ones because it still has a genuine local feel to it. If you're wondering where all the Latinos went after gentrification hit the Mission, we are here, along with other immigrant families. So Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Mission,_San_Francisco) says this neighborhood is "bounded by Geneva Avenue, Alemany Blvd and Mission Street" but I feel like the Excelsior can be included in "the Outer Mission." I consider my hood to be anything after Bernal Heights (so, for locals, anything after that one overpass near Silver). Anyway, like I was saying, there are a lot of locals here and almost no hipsters in sight. You are bound to run into a couple at Broken Record, but that's about it. Mostly you'll run into people you went to high school with at the Little Caesar's on Geneva, or see little old ladies pushing around carts with groceries or laundry. It is easy to get to any part of the City from here, but the only hassle is getting here late at night after the clubs. BART stops running at about 1am, the 26 doesn't exist anymore, and unless you wanna be on the 14 with a bunch of kids tryna earn their gang stripes and professional alcoholics for a good 45 minutes, then you're pretty much stuck taking a cab to get back here. Minus one star for that and also because the fog is almost chronic here.
