Dogwood Festival is an outdoor shopping "mall" that you'll find on both the north and south sides…read moreof Lakeland Drive in Flowood. It's a very nice area that is kept clean and well-maintained. Parking can very often be a pain, especially on the weekends and, of course, during the Holidays; then again, what mall doesn't have that problem?! The other downside is you have to walk outside while going from store to store. It gets really hot in Mississippi during the summer, so walking around outside while shopping isn't ideal. On the north side of Lakeland Drive you'll find several of your larger stores like Best Buy, PetSmart, Target, and Stein Mart. On the south side you'll find Belk in the center of all the smaller shops such as American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Lane Bryant, Bath & Body Works, etc. You'll pretty much find all the shops here you'd expect to find at any indoor mall. There are also many restaurants (including fast food places) on both sides. Some examples are Logans, Cheddars, El Potrillo, Backyard Burger, Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Dickey's BBQ, and many others. I'd like to add on a more personal note that it's very interesting to see how Dogwood and Flowood really "exploded." I grew up in Pearl and I remember when there was nothing here but trees. My junior year of high school I drove from Pearl to Northwest Rankin HS every day and I'd have to drive Lakeland back and forth. There was just nothing there. Even when I moved to Florida in the 90s, there was still nothing there. Imagine my surprise when I returned to MS to visit one day and all this had popped up. I had my mouth hanging open going, "Wowwwwww!" Pretty cool! Anyway... enough of my reminiscing. This is a really nice place to shop, and if you've never been here, you're going to find so very much more than what I was able to mention.

Upon arrival, I was surprised by how small and cozy the airport was. It was extremely easy to navigate through. The baggage claim area + car rental counters were readily available downstairs and the rental center was located directly across the street. The walking distance was relatively short, which I highly appreciated. This airport is the hub for airlines such as American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines. I traveled here using United Airlines via the commuter plane, which was actually the smallest airplane I've been on - "CommuteAir." I returned to this airport to fly home to California on Tuesday, 06/09/26. I had such a positive experience with the TSA line as it took under 5 minutes to get through. I must say it was the shortest TSA line that I've ever encountered in life so far, which was beyond convenient. The airport dining & shops included Samuel Adams / Riverbanks Bar & Grill, Dunkin', Pearl River Marketplace and Hudson. I had visited Hudson on 06/09/26, which was a convenience store filled with snacks, travel essentials, apparel, and so much more. I grabbed coffee and an Evian water bottle. The aesthetic of the airport was inviting. The restrooms were well-maintained and clean. All of the airport staff members were kind. Overall, Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport - JAN is such a lovely airport. Exploring around Mississippi by being surrounded by hospitable people and having access to delicious food were the highlights of the trip. I would be more than happy to visit Mississippi at some point again in the future.

Flying into…read moreJackson is an experience. 1 because you're most likely flying on a teeny tiny plane, but 2 because the amenities themselves are bare and minimal. While it was easy to get in and out of what was their security line, the challenge is that once inside, there really aren't any food options so plan ahead. Another challenge leaving is that you'll have to wait a long time for an uber. There weren't many other people waiting but it did take about 15 minutes for a car to be available. Just be prepared to move a little more slowly here.

I laughed because I was a broke 19-year-old college student living not far from here in a one-bedroom apartment on the reservoir. Would I say it was fancy back then? Yes, in a good kind of way. Back then, just like now, no one made you feel unwelcome. But what I love about this place is the selection of stores. The stores back then and some now were uniquely owned. Therefore, you bought items that you didn't see a zillion people wearing. My favorite store has always been Maison Weiss; it's still here. I remember wanting a 200 dollar belt. I saved my little coins and got it, and added a bracelet. But I also loved and still love the restaurants and the open courtyards. I see they have added Whole Foods, LuluLemon, Free People, a Wine Bar, and some more stores, like Kendra Scott. I can say this place still holds its charm, and probably will forever. I know for me it will always have a place in my heart.

I'm so happy the Braves decided to put their minor league team here in Pearl. How great for the…read morecity! My parents are huge Braves fan and they were both extremely excited to have the minor league team come here! I've been to only one of the Mississippi Braves games and it was a ton of fun. I went with my parents and my two daughters. It just so happen they were playing the Jacksonville Suns (where I have lived for 17 years and where my daughters are from) that night. The game was very excited and both teams played very well. Of course my daughters and me rooted for the Suns all night long! I'm pretty sure we were the only people in the stands who weren't rooting for the Braves. About halfway through the game, the people behind us finally leaned down and said, "Y'all must be from Jacksonville." The girls and I gave them huge smiles and said, 'Yes we are... how'd you guess?!" And we all had a good laugh at that one. My Suns won that night! Yay! But the Braves didn't make it easy on them. I would love to catch another Braves game sometime when I visit Mississippi whether they happen to be playing the Suns again or another team. If you want to have a great night of family fun, then head to a Braves game!

This monument was dedicated in 1976 and sits out front of the Hinds County Court house. It was…read morebuilt to honor residents of Hinds County who lost their lives in defense of freedom, serving in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, or who were missing in action. The memorial is a single vertical spire that's branches out to 5 different arms to form its base. It looks kind of like a rocket. In between the arms at the base are 5 panels, dived up by branch of service and MIA. So, there is a panel honoring Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and MIA. Boooooo! They forgot the Coast Guard. Being a Coast Guard veteran, I am almost use to being forgotten. At the front of the memorial in the ground is a little marker/plaque that reads "LEST WE FORGET Here in revered memory are recorded those valiant residents of Hinds County who lost their lives in defense of this nation so that we who survive - and our posterity - enjoy the blessings of liberty. May God strengthen our patriots devotion to support and preserve forever the cherished ideals for which these precious lives were claimed in noble sacrifice." The spires and arms are made of stone and the panels are made of marble. So it is made of durable material. The memorial is starting to show sins of age. It could have definitely used a good cleaning. Some of the engraving on the memorial is also a bit difficult to read. It is still a nice memorial honoring their local heroes, even given that oversight. There is metered street parking out front of the memorial and there are commercial parking lots within a reasonable walking distance. This is definitely worth a a few minutes of your time if you are in the area. I almost had to stop after I saw it from across the way. Anyway, as with most memorials that I have visited and reviewed, I was there less than 10 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.
