The Romsdalmussets Venner is part of a collection of museums in the Romsdal region of Norway. The…read moremuseums were established in 1912. The Open Air Museum is about a 10-15 minute uphill walk from downtown Molde. The Open Air Museum was so interesting. It is located on a former farm in which historic buildings have been relocated. The collection includes over 40 buildings like stables, farm houses, barns, and workshops dating from the 16th to 20th centuries. There is also a street recreated to look like how Molde would have looked prior to the 1916 fire that is a block away from the gated farm. Fun to explore and talk to the guides dressed in period dress to learn more about the history of Norway. In the house from the 16th century, the guide explained about how a table could be flipped for eating on one surface and working on the other chipped surface and how the garbage was just swept onto the floor. To ventilate the closed home, there was an opening in the ceiling and wooden pegs that could be removed from the walls for more air circulation, hence the window that could be opened and closed. The word window originated from the Old Norse vindauga from vindr (wind) and auga (eye). They say windows are the eyes to the house. Tried some Norwegian flatbread with butter that was being made in the kitchen. Recipe included. So cute to watch the local children demonstrate traditional Norwegian folk dances. Love their dresses. The tickets were about $16 per person. Definitely worth the walk up the hill to learn about Norwegian history.
