We were regulars at Straight off the Road a few years back, but since we moved farther out, we haven't been here in a while. Today, Momma wanted barbecue, and the places closer to home don't offer indoor dining. Since we were dressed up for Mother's Day, we drove out of the way to come here. I expected a good time. Straight off the Road has always had good vibes, and nothing there has changed. Country music when you come in the door, good service, and authentic feeling decorations. It just feels like home in here-- Texas without all the pretentiousness of fancier places. I was surprised to see the parking lot and the restaurant only half full on Mother's Day, but looking back, I should have known then that something wasn't quite right. Everything went well until I got my plate. I ordered the two meat brisket and sausage, potato salad, and fried okra. The portion was huge-- enough for three people -- but I couldn't enjoy it. The brisket should have been the star, but it tasted like was baked too long in an oven an oven a day or two ago. There was no smoke flavor, and the meat just fell apart. I could have eaten it with a spoon. It was tender, sure, but anybody can do that if you cook it/rest it long enough. The flavor just wasn't there. I'm not sure whether they make their sausage or get it from somewhere outside, but it seemed to be quality stuff before they cooked it. It was coarse ground like I like it with good seasoning. But where was the smoke? The sausage honestly looked and tasted like it was sliced and boiled. I was shocked. The potato salad tasted good, but the texture was all wrong. Everything was chopped up small like it was done in the food processor and there was no love in it. Fried okra is hard to get wrong, but there was nothing particularly right about it either. I was so suspicious about the lack of flavor in my meat that I drove around the back parking lot when we left. There were several racks of neatly stacked firewood, but it was all filled up to the top. Either it had just been delivered, or it's not getting used. I suspect the latter. This is Texas. If you're gonna keep the doors open at a barbecue joint, you have to do better. I love coming to your restaurant, and I hope you get things figured out. read more

This is a FAMILY owned business and my friend took me here as a visitor from Southern California! She RAVED about Straight off the Road BBQ and I came over along to check it out as my first time in Texas and first time for Texas BBQ! I got the chopped beef combo and it was a sandwich, a side of fries or chips, and a drink! The service when ordering was amazing! They walked me through the whole process of what was good and popular! In addition, the ambiance of the restaurant was very rustic and homey due to the family posting photos around the restaurant! Super dry brisket and sausage, not a bbq fanatic but something felt off. Not worth the price tag

I really wanted to like this place. The decor was homey and Southern. Cashiers were nice and there's lots of parking and seating, but it missed the mark on authentic and good tasting bbq. Chopped beef was a finely minced texture. The sweet tea and Mac and cheese was the best out of the entire meal. Ribs were tender but had no flavor and seemed to be baked and not cooked on a pit. !00 % true experience. I was in Crosby working and stopped to get lunch here. I ordered the 3 meat plate. It was the worst tasting BBQ I have had in my life. There was absolutely no flavor to any of the meats. And the real kicker was I have food poisoning now, I'm sick as a dog while writing this review. I paid over $35.00 for the food, and it was not fresh. I wouldn't even feed it to my dogs after it made me sick. I should take the leftovers to the Health Department and sue them. read more

Portions are good size. I got the three meat plate (ribs, brisket & sausage) and for some reason when they brought it all out on one plate, it was floating in water which was not appealing. The ribs were not cut. Potato salad was good. Pinto beans were good. Sauce is good. They just need to work on the meat. Their prices have gone up. This used to be our go to place when we lived in Crosby. We were looking forward to a great meal today. Unfortunately that's not what we experienced. The brisket was mostly fat. The pulled pork had giant crusty burnt pieces in it. The bun was burned. The crackers were good as was the Mac and cheese. Those were the highlights. We won't be back, that's for sure. read more

At first, I thought it was a little expensive but every home owned barbecue spot is pretty expensive but when I got my sandwich, God this thing is huge. I love this place. I come to Crosby a couple times a year to the IUOE down the block, I always try to come here and get some Texas steak. The steaks here never disappoint and you can go down the block and get your some beer or liquor and they let you drink it here. Last time I was here was June 14-19, 2024. Initially when you're ordering, especially if you're new to the area and don't really know what to order, you will feel rushed. But the food is absolutely delicious! We've been here 3 times and every time the food is so tasty and the portions are HUGE! The pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw is by far the best thing I've tried! We drive out to the sticks from Houston thinking we were in for a real treat. For some truly authentic BBQ. Service was GREAT! Truly enjoyed the ambiance of the place as well. However was disappointed with the "chopped" brisket. It was definitely more of a soft beef pate. Also the green beans were so over cooked they were mushy as well. The fried Okra was delightful. The mac n cheese was tasty too! I'd definitely recommend trying the sliced brisket if you go, and the steak option that they have instead of a chopped stuffed potato. read more

We order 2 smoked sandwiches. While they ad a ton of turkey, it was too salty. Very hard to eat. I also ordered a side of coleslaw, 1/2 pint on the menu. The girl brought me a monkey dish. I asked for a fork and she said they're over by the drink fountain. Cole slaw was the best part. This place came highly recommended from my lawyer's office. So much for their taste. We have been going there for several years now. Went there today and I got the chicken fried chicken, with mashed potatoes and green beans. Hubby got the chicken fried steak, with green beans and okra. Mine was OK, not bad. Sides were OK as well. Hubbys sides were OK but the CFS was horrible. He said quite possibly the worst CFS he had ever had in his life. It was not one piece but 4 or 5 smaller pieces. Some of the pieces appeared to have rolled into balls as they were cooking. The meat appeared to have been pounded to the point where it did not appear to even be meat before it was cooked. It was almost indistinguishable from the batter, with no resemblance of steak at all. Absolutely AWFUL. This food here used to be consistently good, and prices reasonable, but the now inflated prices and the lower food quality do not make it viable... at least for things other than BBQ. read more

Absolutely the best BBQ around. We enjoy eating dinner regularly at this establishment. Friendly service and clean dining. We recently purchased a ham for the holidays for the first time. Extremely pleased. It was smoked with a wonderful glaze. Very lean and tender. It was by far the best ham we have ever tasted. I personally think that it was better than a honey baked ham. read more
