Good school but their food is all wheat. Pretty good teachers and faculty. The parking lot is also too far from the door though

Public Review of Massanutten Military Academy 2025 Summer Camp - A Concerned Parent's Perspective…read more I am writing this review to share my family's troubling experience with Massanutten Military Academy and to raise concerns about what I believe to be subtle discrimination that ultimately led to my son, being removed from the program. My son was dismissed after a series of incidents that, while concerning in isolation, were interpreted and handled in a way that I believe was biased, disproportionate, and lacked the supportive framework that a school should provide. From the beginning, my son was subjected to scrutiny that did not appear to be equally applied to others. For example, while he refused a haircut to conform to JROTC standards--a decision some may view as defiant--others who also resisted conformity were not disciplined as severely. Additionally we were told by the Admissions Representative Mr. Elshafe that his hair would be ok and he would not need a haircut. There were several behavioral concerns raised, including an inappropriate comment made during formation, complaints from peers, and his involvement in a misguided prank. My son did take accountability for his presence during one of the incidents but consistently denied direct involvement, and no definitive evidence was presented against him. Despite this, the school concluded that he was the ringleader and used that assumption to justify his removal. This outcome disregarded mitigating factors such as his attempts to comply afterward, the lack of verified misconduct in certain situations, and the possibility that his behavior was misinterpreted or handled without the cultural sensitivity or emotional support that could have de-escalated the situation. Moreover, the language used by staff and the assumptions made about his behavior suggest a deeper issue--one where minority students or those who don't immediately conform may be more harshly judged. While the school may defend its actions as protecting others, the process felt more punitive than corrective, more exclusionary than educational. As a parent, I expected the school to foster growth, discipline, and mentorship--not alienation. I urge other parents, especially those of children who may not fit a narrow mold, to be cautious and to ask critical questions about how discipline is administered and whether fairness is truly practiced. This experience has been painful, but I hope speaking out leads to reflection and change within the institution. Every child deserves to be guided--not just judged. -- Elisa

We chose MVCA because of its family atmosphere. The parents and teachers are considered "partners" in the child's education and there are many ways that the parents are kept up to date about their child's progress. This includes RenWeb, an APP that you can actually download on your phone, frequent emails, and parent-teacher conferences. Many of the teachers have become not only my child's friend but also mine. The staff is very easy to get along with and truly seem to care whether or not my child succeeds. Academics are very important to the extent that if you do not maintain a certain GPA, you are not allowed to play sports. Children are also trained in leadership skills and I have watched my child bloom in this area since starting at this school. Two leadership retreats are offered during 7-12th grade as well as multiple other events where the students can grow their leadership skills and serve. There are also mission and oversea trips offered in high school years. The school continues to seek ways to expand what they offer and college prep opportunities. Overall, we are very pleased.
