In spite of the name, this is actually not a hotel. Hotel has a double meaning in Australia as I have learned. It can be a place of lodging, but also many pubs use it as well as it relates to past liquor laws. Using the term "hotel" as a way to skirt liquor licensing regulations. Strawberry Hills is a nice Aussie pub just down the street from Central Railway Station. It looks a little divey on the outside, but the 2nd floor interior is quite nice and stylish and even has free Wi-Fi. This is a good spot to get a drink and quality pub food at a reasonable price in Sydney. If you are dining upstairs, you order your food and drinks at the counter. If you are dining in, the staff then brings the food to your table when it is ready. While they do have a wine menu, there isn't one for the large assortment of beers and cider on tap. If you are not sure what to order, I would list the types of beer and cider that you like to find one that suits you. As for the food, there is a regular menu consisting of pub food and a late night menu of different pizzas. The pricing here is quite reasonable as most mains (name for entree in Australia) are under $20. Had a Sunday night dinner here and opted for the slow cooked lamb shoulder ($18) with a pint of Bulmers cider ($7). I chose lamb because it is harder to find this meat on menus in the US, whereas in Australia it seems to be a standard offering. The lamb was terrific as the meat was fall off the bone tender. There was a bit of fat and gristle on the lamb, but I was okay with this since this helped to accentuate the meat's flavor. The accompanying roasted vegetables and red wine jus were also delicious and complimented the lamb. As for the cider, it was my first time trying Bulmers and I really liked it. It has a very crisp and refreshing taste that paired well with my meal. Enjoyed my meal at Strawberry Hills. The food and drinks here are good and value for your money. I like the ambiance of this pub too as it is modern, yet is casual enough to be a local drinking hole that you frequent regularly. read more

Definitely a great bargain for food and beer in Surry Hills- Everyone in our office swears by this place, like it has become the company Cafeteria and pub. I've eaten here twice and both times have been reasonably happy with my choices. Given Sydney's ridiculous food and drink prices this place is an Oasis of Value by comparison. Serious bang for the buck. There is the outside patio which is smoker friendly, so those who cannot tolerate that, beware. (Upstairs is where you want to be) They do a great job with the pub classics, so stick to those, and all will be good mate! read more

Woah, this place certainly gets packed on a Friday and Saturday night, at least in the upstairs area. In fact the only part of this pub that doesn't seem to be wall to wall people is the TAB area and the pokies room. Actually, talking about pokies rooms (or VIP lounges as they are known in Sydney), this one has an area where you can smoke and play pokies, which baffled me somewhat because I have never seen anything like this anywhere else I have been, however when I asked Sydneysiders about it they seemed to think it was normal. All in all a pretty good hotel, though as I've suggested, finding a seat on a Friday or a Saturday night is certainly going to be a challenge. read more

Strawberry hills pub is an old school Australian pub that isn't pretentious, and is true to their core Aussie. A year ago I made a 2 day stop in Sydney on my way from Melbourne to London and stayed in a nearby hostel. They recommended this place, I think, and I was pretty pleased. I paid $13 for a steak with fries and salad, and had a decent beer for $6. I couldn't get the public wifi to work, so the staff gave me the password for the private wifi. I was able to get some stuff done on my computer while i ate. Great value, I'd come back. read more

The Strawb is one of those pubs that tarted itself up in the 2000s, but no one was really convinced. They still have loads of pokies, and the downstairs part still looks like a regular old pub (but maybe a little cleaner). The upstairs is a funky beer garden, with one section of the roof open to the air, in what looks to be a rather nice little architectural statement. Unfortunately when we were there it was packed out (Saturday night), so we opted for a tall table downstairs near the windy doorway (literally the only thing we could find), nowhere near as fun, but it was the best we could do. For pub grub, the Strawb does very well - even the salmon was actually pretty appetising. They seem to put a bit of effort into the "gourmet" pub grub side of things. It's not as cheap as the Shakey up the road, but the chefs are probably a little better. This pub has less character than others nearby, it feels kinda ... mainstream. It's to do with the atmosphere, the lighting, the uninteresting decor and the pokies in the background. But on the up-side, I got asked for ID here, which I took as a tremendous compliment, though I suspect the bouncer was just being conscientious. read more

I ordered the lamb shanks. I got 2 with the most awesome butter drenched mashed potatoes and a really good green salad - for $15. The shanks were falling apart and most importantly there were 2 of them! My wife and I had 2 beers each, and 2 meals for $50 flat. You go to the bar to order and they bring your food. It works really well and the staff are very obliging. The funny thing is if you walk in downstairs you think the place is a complete dive - with all that old Aussie charm etc but then you go upstairs and their is a more hip crowd. read more

When I first stepped into the Strawberry Hills Hotel, I wasn't particularly impressed or intrigued. Though it was when I started really looking at my surroundings that I developed a fondness for this place. I originally thought it would be like a regular hotel with miserable decoration and uninteresting clientele. Here, there seems to be a special attention made to making the place trendy. The outdoor courtyard is just a great spot to chill on a sunny day. Luckily, this place is open 24 hours, making it an important watering hole for me. I've also been for a quick lunch, when I got a chicken schnitzel for $12. In fact, most of the meals are under $15. Once I started eating, I realized that it was actually really good and the portions are sizeable. Along with my schnitzel, I had a glass of pure blonde. The service is kind of slow, though I'm not sure why. There seemed to be an adequate amount of staff, but it still took a while for my schnitzel to be cooked. Another time I went, I ordered the fish and chips, which were okay. When I went to the bar to order a Bloody Mary, the girl at the bar said that there wasn't anyone in the whole hotel who knew how to make a Bloody Mary. WHAT? I haven't met a person, let alone a bartender, who didn't know how to make a Bloody Mary. That was surely a disappointment. Oh, and there's a $50 minimum on credit card transactions. read more

On the corner of Devonshire and Elizabeth Streets in Surry Hills sits The Strawberry Hills Hotel, a popular place for locals and those not so local. Perhaps one of the reasons it's so popular is that it is open 24hrs? And you can grab one of their steaks pretty much any time during those 24 hours! It might be because of the newly renovated upstairs area and beer garden. Or the new gaming and TAB area. It could be the live jazz that plays depending on what day you're there or maybe it's the combination of all the above. there's a couple of rooms that you can sit and escape the masses in or maybe grab a drink at one of the tables on the footpath or enclosed 'outdoor' area on the street level. This place is a local favourite and completely packed out for aftr work drinks and happy hour.The food is your proper pub style low price and low quality fare, but no-one's here to show off! The wedges are the cheapest I've seen anywhere and are more plentiful than anywhere else. The people here are usually very friendly and a great laugh, don't be surprised to find yourself with 5 new best friends by the end of the evening. I remember the Strawberry Hills hotel before it was renovated and it was a bit of a run down, dusty old place. The upstairs area is now a modern, beautiful area, with an indoor/outdoor terrace, wooden tables and good pub grub menu. The $12 steaks with mash are excellent. Service was good, food was disappointing. I love eating at pubs, they usually serve good and cheap food. Well, this was not the case. Food here is a bit more expensive than other pubs in the city and it quite didn't achieve my expectations. I ordered chicken schnitzel, they poured the sauce onto the chicken and it wasn't as crunchy as you usually expect from schinitzels (sauce should be served on the side). The chips tasted as if they were fried more than once. My friend ordered a pizza and it came with big pieces of vegetables (potato on pizza??). I also had a friend who ordered nachos, and the tomato sauce they poured on top was clearly one of those you buy ready to eat from grocery shops. Apart from the food, service was great. The waitresses were very attentive, they even promptly brought some water and a cloth when one of my friends spilled wine on her pants. Staff is very friendly and although it gets busy on Friday nights, the rooftop bar doesn't have big lines. read more

Didn't try the food, but what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked great. Doesn't matter if you are getting a burger or salad or the fall-of-the-bone lamb shanks, you will not be disappointed. I was a fan of the old Strawberry Hills when it was a grimy old floozy dishing up super cheap pub meals and a wayward local or two. Now it's had an overhaul, and the clientele has changed. Mind you, the food is now excellent and there's a brilliant rooftop beer garden upstairs, so I'm not really complaining. It's a great space for groups to enjoy a few beers in the sunshine and definitely a new watering hole to add to your list. The improved menu is a whole lot fancier than before, and prices have risen with it, but it's still great value for money. I had the grilled salmon steak with pan-fried potatoes and mushrooms, spinach and hollandaise, and it looked like something you'd get from a top city restaurant, not your local pub. (Everyone at the table actually got food envy, which is always a good sign.) The other meals looked great too, though, from massive burgers to sirloin steaks and chicken schnitzels. My friends and I have just heard that the Dave Smith Trio will not be playing on the first Saturday of the month anymore and we are so disappointed. We looked forward to this date each month and did our best to get the word around. The trio is such superior music and attracted many top performers in the jazz world who were invited to sit-in. January was particularly good. We all spent money on drinks and always ordered meals which we raved about. We thought the gig was going well. On a public holiday (7/10/13) I got together with some friends for lunch and a few drinks. As usual, bar staff and other guests were friendly and happy. My friends decided to order meals from bar's standard menu, I decided to ask for a special: 'smoky BBQ beef ribs' and chips - $18. My friends got what they asked for and they seemed to enjoy it. My meal however, arrived completely covered in BBQ source. When I checked what's underneath - heaps of fat - I was under impression it was pork belly instead - I went back to the kitchen and asked for clarification - I was told by 'chef' "I know what the pork is'. I went back to my table in search of any evidence of beef meat. Didn't find much - less than 2 spoonful. I didn't touch chips either - they looked like they've been cooked many, many times. I gave my plate back to the kitchen with my opinion, didn't ask for a refund - perhaps I should. Christmas is coming soon and I intended to organise lunch at Strawberry for 20+ of my workmates, but this is not the case now. On the way home I got Thai take-away for my lunch. I give only 1 star - for ambiance and outdoor space on the first floor. read more
