    Quinoa and butternut squash salad
    Jennifer S.

My husband and I had a decent dinner here last night. He got the apricot and beer-braised pork neck whilst I got the quinoa and butternut squash salad. We also each ordered the Belgian lambic. We sat upstairs. We got there about 8pm. You're supposed to order food at the bar but it was slammed so our experience was enhanced incredibly by the blonde, lovely Romanian waitress who got our orders at the table. My husband asked for a cut to not be very fatty and the cook obliged, which was a good experience for him. I also got my salad without dressing. For the price it's an excellent value. My husband said his meal wasn't the best taste he ever had but was satisfying. Ditto with my salad- nicely roasted butternut squash chunks but not the best I've ever had. But my my meal was huge! There's are no official takeaway boxes (boo on you Strongroom!) but our lovely waitress somehow scrounged a plastic container for me and kitchen roll. So nice! The entertainment offered seems to be pretty cool; I would definitely come back for that.

    A fun night with friends

Great fun bar to have drinks with a decent meal. We run a PandaPay evening last night and it was smiles all the way. I had the chicken burger with cheese and chips. All portions were of decent size and extremely tasty. Personally I'm not a beer person, THOUGH they had two very impressive Pilsner barrels that enables the beer to go straight from the barrel to your pint! Definitely a sight to be seen...and obviously to be tasted ;-) Strongroom Bar has one of the most impressive outdoor areas I know in Shoreditch - which is perfect for groups and parties. It is rather loud and buzz at night, so I would not suggest to come here for business meetings or romantic dates - though for everything else, grab your friends and head on down :-)

Smashed glasses left for quite a while...

I've been here twice now, once during the night when the toilets were at there shallowest, covered with and inch deep of water with no attempt to fix at the time, and the other, yesterday during the day . The atmosphere outside was pleasant enough, but a little hipster for my taste. The whole interior had a lingering whiff of urine, which isn't exactly conducive to stirring my appetite. When we got to the bar, the staff were good enough to point out it was £4 for half a pint rather than just serve a pint straight up, but she made no effort to conceal her dirty look for my drink choice (kraken and dandelion and burdock is a lovely summer drink thank you!) before not filling the measure shot very close to the top... We sat outside in the sun, it was busy, with people sat on the floor to ensure they weren't in the shade, but there was a rather large backlog of glasses for the amount of people, which people were regularly knocking over. We only stayed for one drink, leisurely for around 45 minutes, and four+ glasses were smashed in that time, which was only just being swept up as we left. We hoped the people sat on the floor were sober enough to notice if there was glass in their buttcheeks! Nicely stocked bar, and nice enough setting, but really needs better cleaning and tidying!

Curtain Road has some cracking bars, and The Strongroom is almost one of them. Entry is via the courtyard - very useful for you smokers and probably great fun once summer decides to show up. Sizewise though, I was a bit surprised that somewhere with a courtyard this big was quite so dinky and intimate inside. The upstair room (probably the larger of the two) has its own bar and the times I've been there, staff have been friendly, quick to serve and usually playing some decent 90s Indie. There's not a lot else to tell about the place, which is why I can only give it a 3. Casual and attitude-free though.

INSIDE Spacious, clean, and plenty of seating both upstairs and down. MENU For larger parties, they recommend their prefix menu which includes a various sampling of lots of delicious items. FOOD 10/10 I haven't eaten Indian food much, but was thoroughly impressed. From my mango lassi which was perfectly sweetened and tart to buttered buns, fried okra, black Dahl, garlic naan, and lamb skewers, everything was delicious. I esp loved the lamb skewers! We ordered a side of garlic naan with cheese which is basically a quesadilla and it was super cheesy and delicious as well. OVERALL Would def recommend Dishoom when visiting London. The food was exceptional -- aroma, flavors, spice levels, portions; everything was perfect. While visiting London, a local friend invited me to Dishoom, knowing how much I love Indian cuisine. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 5PM, and the place was already packed. They don't take reservations for dinner unless you're a large group, but trust me, the wait is worth it. They have a fantastic bar where you can grab drinks while you wait for a table (they give you buzzers). I tried the Negroni and another tequila-based cocktail (sadly I can't remember the name), and both were phenomenal. Shared plates are definitely the way to go at Dishoom. We ordered the gunpowder potatoes (incredible), an appetizer with potatoes and pineapple (not my favorite; the pineapple threw me off), monkfish curry (amazing), and chicken curry. It was a lot of food for just two of us, but I couldn't stop eating. I seriously wanted to bottle up that sauce! The service was surprisingly impeccable, especially considering how busy they were. We ended up spending about £110 for an incredible dinner, and we nearly couldn't finish everything. Lastly, the ambiance! Inspired by Iranian cafes in India, the atmosphere at Dishoom is eclectic. I loved the dim lighting, unique decor, and the lively pace of the restaurant. Just go!

Bacon was too oily. Potatoes tasted over-seasoned. I'm not a fan of mushrooms in general, so I couldn't tell if they were good or not, I just don't like mushrooms. I was most disappointed in the beans. They were heavily seasoned in some kind of curry, when all I wanted was normal English beans. The food wasn't terrible, I was simply expecting better quality.

The waiters were nice but the food was not the best. I got a scrambled egg on toast with smoked salmon & the salmon had a fishy smell to it, was flavorless and there was barely any hot sauce available. My friend also thought her burger was just okay as well with the biggest positive point being the bacon. That being said, the fried dough balls dipped in chocolate were really great and so were the holiday specials for alcoholic drinks. While the inside was spacious and retro and had a cool vibe, I have to knock down points for the actual food itself and wish that I had kept the memory of how much I enjoyed this place pre Covid as that since I wouldn't make my way out to this restaurant again even if I'm in the area.

So I live around the corner and have always popped in, in an attempt to try their legendary burgers. I've always arrived on the last day etc etc and left it. The open hours that come up online and are not accurate and need updating, they were certainly open later than 8 when I visited on a Wednesday. Alas, today. The lovely chef/gentleman working behind the counter in 34 degree heat talked me through the options. I went for the Veg Thai green curry with rice and a beef steak (in some delicious sauce and Parmesan). The Thai green curry had unbelievable depth of flavour - actually rivalling many Thai restaurants in my opinion. The beef steak. So flipping soft. HOW!? Simply blown away. I don't really know what else to say to be honest. So much love and care has gone into this food - you can really tell - I'm serious. If you find yourself walking by and are tempted - please give it a go. Their lasagne looked amazing too... I haven't even mentioned the price - dirt cheap considering the area and far superior.. Go! I've been looking forward to visiting Duck & Waffle for quite some time. The views are incredible,…read morethe space itself is striking, and on paper it promises that perfect London mix of skyline, late-night energy, and elevated comfort food. Unfortunately, our experience was soured before it even had a chance to begin. My girlfriend and I walked in excited, completely amicable, simply hoping to head upstairs for a bite and drinks. We were greeted by the doorman with an immediate, dismissive "Are you good?" -- not in a welcoming or helpful tone, but in a way that felt skeptical and unnecessarily confrontational. There was no warmth, no "welcome in," no attempt at hospitality. It immediately set an uncomfortable tone. He then proceeded to call upstairs as though he were doing us some sort of favor just by allowing us to go up. The entire interaction felt transactional and judgmental rather than gracious. First impressions matter, especially at a place that positions itself as a premium dining destination. Hospitality begins at the door, not at the table. When we finally made it upstairs, the room was filled with visibly drunk, rowdy groups -- which only made the earlier attitude feel even more misplaced. If that environment is acceptable (and profitable), then two polite guests looking for drinks and food shouldn't be met with suspicion at the entrance. By that point, the damage was done. The initial interaction had already rubbed us the wrong way, and the energy upstairs didn't help. We ultimately decided to leave before even sitting at our table. That's how strongly the first impression impacted us. It's difficult to justify staying somewhere when you don't feel genuinely welcomed from the outset. Duck & Waffle has the potential to be memorable for all the right reasons. But someone representing the brand at the very front needs to understand that hospitality isn't optional -- it's foundational. A simple, respectful welcome would have changed everything. I hope management takes this seriously, because no guest should feel judged or dismissed before they even step inside.
