There are only a handful of restaurants I would give 5 Stars to, Student Prince is one of them! What's not to love? Delicious food, awesome beer selection, authentic German atmosphere/decor, friendly staff, quick service, and very reasonably priced! I wish we live closer to come here all the time. We can here on a Thursday afternoon for lunch. Due to COVID, they closed the entire street so there can be plenty of outdoor seating. We were seated under a large tent decorated with festive colorful ribbons. To my surprise, they have a large selection of child's menu for under $7 and almost all of the food on the regular menu is below $20. We ordered child's grilled cheese with ham added, lamb shank with spetzel as side, and wiener schnitzel with an fried egg on top. Our server Patrick was very nice and took our orders right away. The beers were served quickly. I had a Spencer Trappist, hubby had Spaten Optimator and Paulaner Salvatore. So the child's grilled cheese was huge... Bigger than the adult dishes. Not complaining at all because we were able to have some too. It's on sour dough bread, nice & crispy. My lamb shank was calling off the bone tender and delish. Hubby was VERY pleased with his schnitzel - flaky breading and tender inside. As I said, everything was great! A must try in my opinion! read more

I was once a regular at the Student Prince/The Fort. Their meals were always consistent and even though they were a bit pricey it was quality food in a good environment. Then Rudy sold it to Yee family and they have destroyed a once great institution. There was a time that every restaurant in Springfield was for sale EXCEPT the Student Prince. It was a landmark. A place to go to have a consistent pleasant dining experience. All that has now changed. For the worse. I have not dined at the Fort for over two years due to Covid. Just recently I thought I'd go for lunch as I recall it being reasonably priced and a good meal. Well those days are long gone. Not only are their prices exorbitant and unreasonable the portion size has diminished to ridiculous. They always charged for Roquefort dressing on a salad but now they charge extra to add a salad to an entree. How is that even possible? It's salad! Then instead of two pieces of meat with an entree you only get one. $19 for one piece of breaded pork. It was dry and overcooked and it's supposed to come with mushroom demi glace and the portion was abysmal. No rye bread brought to the table as was standard in the past. $6 to add a salad where an entree includes one side. Shameful rip off! On a Wed at noon place was dead and I can see why. My entree with salad and a beer came to $36 dollars!! Seriously? You know that they are ripping off their customers where that same meal would of cost maybe half without tip. Who ever thought this was a good idea will be in for a surprise Restaurants are hurting for business but when the food isn't even that good and the prices are ridiculously overpriced. I'm a homegrown, homemade Italian food eating kid. Yeah reader, I've grown up eating like a god. When I find a restaurant that beats my mother's cooking, you'll all hear about it. But, the student prince?? Yeah people that'll be the place to go, but until then this is what you've got.... My grandpa makes a prime rib every Christmas for the family, but, sorry Gramps - your prime rib has absolutely NOTHING on this place. Here's a quick little list on why I loved this place. 1. Environment - they have this wicked sick Peter Pan bus in the back of the outdoor seating area that you can walk inside, some hammered mom and her daughters went up there and started dancing and wow was it awesome. I mean truly funny, you got a smile from how content they were with life - it was awesome. Then the music, I mean this guy singing this night was good. Like reader he was damn good, billy Joel good. Guy was on the voice or some shit, sick. 2. Ok food and drinks time. Butter knife cutting prime rib, I got the kings cut with a side of sauerkraut and this cool little hollow muffin, idk something German but it was mad good. The beer? Get the Sparta half and half like they have at the Big E, thing was like 7 bucks for a 20oz and by the end of the night I was about to dance with the mom and daughters on the bus. But seriously the prime rib was the best I've ever had - truly butter knife cutting type of meat. Best prime rib I've ever had! And damn I was full too. Best meal I've had in a very long time, will definitely be going back, can't say enough good things. If you want a good meal for good prices and great drinks - Student Prince it is! read more

At the student prince I had the jaeger schnitzel with red kraut. A simple dish that brought me back to the times that I worked outside Hannover during the mad cow epidemic that rolled across Europe in the early 2000's. We ate a lot of pork while there! At the student prince this was a great example. Pork cutlet pounded thin, battered and fried served with a mushroom gravy and warm red sauerkraut. The food was good and Germanesque. Potato Pancakes were delicious. I had a Jaeger Schnitzel that was darn tasty. Lots of things to look at here, the mugs and decorations for Christmas are pretty impressive. We were told that the owner or manager (I don't remember the name of the person) actually gets up in ladders and cleans everything thoroughly twice a year, which is good be side there are a lot of dust collectors stationed about. Shellie is an absolute GEM of the establishment! We biked from New Haven to Springfield, intending to get a train back to NH at 5:30. We stopped here for a quick pint and a bite before hopping on the train. When we got to the station, they turned us away because Amtrak didn't want to take our bikes! They made us wait until the 9:45pm train, so we happily rode back to Student Prince and Shellie not only warmly welcomed us back, but made our three hours go by so quickly with fantastic service and a kind and genuine demeanor. Was in the area as medical student rotating at Baystate. Came to Student Price at least a handful of times. They have great German food here. This is what I've tried; Schnitzel-made in house fried crispy while still incredibly tender and juicy on the inside. Absolutely fantastic. Spatzel-comes with a lot of the meals as a side. Made in house. Very tasty and goes great with all their mains. Sausages-made in house. Very big and generous portions. Tasted a little cold to me so I think it would be reasonable to ask them to pan fry (or however they prepare it) a little more. Chips-made in house. Absolutely recommend. Very good, think, and crispy. Order this and enjoy. Pork shank-as a caveat has skin on and pretty fatty. Huge portion but after the fat and bone not that much meat. I personally would not order again despite this being one of their supposedly popular specials. Chicken tenders-juicy and has some sort of special batter that made it a little different. It's a good appetizer! They also had a special fish with risotto that was super nice. I don't think it's on their menu but if it is, it's worth a try! Tatertots-very generous portion as a side. Wow - start with it is Springfield, MA. A city that hurled a Hail Mary and sold what little it had left of its soul to MGM. Cops at every intersection- for your safety. This place started in 1935 and that's the same year the food is from. Overpriced microwaved and fried cheese and shrimp , The interior is old school which is the only highlight. The Student Prince in Springfield MA is a landmark here. They specialize in both German flavors and decorations. It is an experience. The menu offers a good selection of German dishes and sides. Beverage and dessert selections were quite delightful. Menu prices reflect the speciality dishes. The staff knowledgeable, a bit curt and not particularly attentive. (Must add it was very busy) we had a reservation and were seated quickly. The room we were in was a bit loud for me. The food a bit salty for me. The Student Prince exceeded my expectations by more than football field! The experience of the restaurant included perfect, personal table service by our server Jeff, who in addition to knowing every ingredient, every dish, it's inspiration and origin, and how it's best enjoyed, was our guide thru the 400 years of history on hand at The Fort / Student Prince. There is no possible way to say enough good words about Jeff, who gained our trust and steered my girlfriend away from her comfort zones (salad, burger) towards the German classics the restaurant is rightfully known for. Her bratwurst and my prime rib (the Sunday special - I would definitely recommend!) were both amazing - bravo to the kitchen on the Sunday in early September 2019 when we visited. I totally understand why Andre the Giant used to love to eat at the Student Prince. The amazing German food, the awesome selection of beer, the professional, witty, knowledgeable servers like Jeff. For a time traveling nerd like me, I have to add: Bravo for the preservation of the beautiful historic dining rooms and artifacts, really giving a deep sense of place and time to the experience. read more

Best German Food this side of the Atlantic!! I travel to Germany often and this restaurant is the real deal! FANTASTIC

I have been eating at the Student Prince once every couple of years or so since I was about 10. The ambiance of the place is definitely 5 stars. The new owners have given the place a deep clean and refreshed the furniture. The amazing collection of plates, beer steins, antler chandeliers and bottle openers is fun to look at. I would also give the service a 5. Our waitress was friendly and took care of us and the drinks and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The food is about a 3.5. It was a 4.5 the last time I went before COVID but the servings have become smaller and the prices have gone way up. The sausages are about the same size but the schnitzel was much smaller as were the side dishes of of sauerkraut, spätzle and red cabbage. We split a large pretzel served with dipping sauces (very nice) and I had the three sausage combo. The Knackwurst was delicious, the bratwurst decent but the chef choice sausage not really to my liking. It was floury/bready tasting. My friend had the veal schnitzel with paprika sauce which tasted good but was a very small portion for the price. The beer selections is great, as can be imagined, heavy on German Beers but with some American ones as well. If you want decent German food in a place steeped in history, head to the Student Prince. It will cost quite a bit but is nice once in a while. read more

As someone who grew up eating real German food, I seldom eat at German Restaurants as I am not easily impressed, and as was the case with Student Prince, was disappointed. I had the Classic Schnitzel which was scorched and overcooked. The red cabbage however was excellent. It was an okay experience overall but not sure how soon I'll repeat it. read more

Haven't been to this restaurant since the early 2000's. I remember it as being good. Unfortunately something has changed. The schnitzel I ordered was gross. It was covered in grease and barely edible. I will say the staff was very friendly, but needless to say I won't be coming back. Sort of sad, another good restaurant gone bad. read more

We wanted to try a different type menu for lunch. I found this interesting German restaurant with an amazing history. The hostess gave us a nice booth in the main dining. Lori was our server, and she was awesome. I inquired if the sauerbraten came with red cabbage. It did and my gosh it was delicious. I hadn't eaten sauerbraten so well prepared since I dined at the Black Forest Inn in Los Gatos, CA long since closed. We decided to order the dessert Lori recommended. I had the apple strudel with ice cream and my sister the lemon curd cake with strawberries. Both were sinfully good. When leaving the restaurant, the hostess gave us a tour of all the rooms and explained the history of the fort and the restaurant. I just love places like this. Where can you get a history lesson and fabulous meal all at the same place. Be sure to patronize this great find. read more

It's been a while since I was there, and now I remember why. I had the stuffed shrimp which was so so. My wife had their famous baked scrod that was over cooked, and kind of tasteless. The best part of the meal was the cucumber salad. Service was poor, with the waitress being absent for long periods of time. People who came in after us and had another waitress were served long before we were. The ambiance was very disruptive due to the loud motorcycle and scooters ridden by the locals. This place helped me pull off the ultimate ruse: surprising my boyfriend for his birthday. Well not so much helped but rather, was the place our friends kept him while my train from New York was running late. All in all, it was a great night. They had a live band that took a brake from their set to sing him happy birthday. They have a full menu filled with German goodies. They have a full bar. The food looked great but we stuck with drinks and dessert. I honestly could not stop eating the carrot cake. We got two slices for 4 people and it was plenty. Not exaggerating. These slices were huge. The icing was really thick and rich and the cake part was moist and really well made. Everyone got beers but I stuck to coffee. Nothing special but good coffee nonetheless. The place is really charming with steins lining the ceiling interesting plates and decor on the walls. The wait staff was really friendly and helped us make sure the birthday boy had a good night. I've never been to a German restaurant before, but the only thing that upset me about this place was how long it took me to go and the fact that it was my second resort for the night. We got two mixed drinks, both were great. He got the mule and I got a jalepeno marg. We opted for two appetizers because we couldn't decide, the calamari on special and the beer pretzel that came with honey mustard and beer cheese, both of which were house made. The dips for the pretzel were delicious and the calamari was better than my fiancees favorite at latitude. Even I enjoyed the calamari and thats not something I just order. After the apps I was excited for what was to come for dinner. I got the sauerbraten with sauerkraut and spatzle on the side, my fiancée got the pork shank with sweet and sour red cabbage and the brussels. The sauerbraten was cooked well. Tender, a tiny bit on the dry side but there was gravy so it didn't really matter to me. The gravy was phenomenal and had so much flavor. I missed my spatzle with it and omggggg. I asked for extra gravy with my leftovers. If I could bathe in a gravy it would be that one. I think I'm addicted at this point. Sauerkraut was the first fresh one I had and was also bursting with flavor. My fiancees shank was cooked great. Juicy and flavorful with a crisp skin, his brussels were fried to perfection. I've never had them with honey, but wow. The cabbage was also delicious. J can tell that whoever is making the food here really is passionate about what they do and skilled to match. My wife and I went to the Student Prince to celebrate our anniversary. I was able to make reservations online which I thought was very convenient. We scored some free on street parking and were promptly seated for a 7pm reservation. The waitress was fantastic. Very easy going, friendly, informative and attentive. We started with the pretzel appetizer. As the picture shows this massive giant looked intimidating. It came with two dipping sauces jalapeño beer cheese (that was filled with flavor) and a nice contrasting honey mustard. Let me tell you this pretzel was delicious. It was crispy on the outside and soft and light on the inside. Went great with my German beer! For entrees my wife got the pork chops with spatzle and sweet and sour red cabbage. Pork chops were cooked perfectly. Moist, tender, full of flavor. The two sides were equally amazing. I ordered the braised pork shank. With the plate included a steak knife. Not sure why because this was as tender as butter! The Demi glas gravy that came with it was heavenly and the shank was hefty enough for me to have leftovers. All in all this was easily the best dining experience I have had since before COVID. Would definitely recommend. read more
