SO MANY RED FLAGS!!! -Stylist kept saying I have heat damage when in reality I don't -Overcharged for a wash, deep condition and haircut -Talked to me as if I didn't understand her -Very informal and rude on over the phone -Employess vape freely in the shop -ATM was broken -DO NOT COME HERE -Wash, deep condition and cut = $120 SCAM!!!!!!!!! -I even asked her a refund of at least half the money over the phone and she said no. She tried cutting the conversation short over th phone claiming she was "busy working at the salon" I came here last week on Friday to do a consultation and get rid of my layers. She said she didn't want me to wash it and she'll do it in the appointment. When I came in the stylist was super confused on why I was there as if I didn't make the appointment and mixing me up with a different client. She had me sit down and went ahead with the consultation, she told me how my hair has different textures in different parts of my hair, that it was heat damaged and thin. I told her how I wouldn't usually go to the salon to do my hair and that it's been close to 2 years since I've gotten it straigthened. But she didn't believe it. I also told her how I thought about coloring my hair, but she said how my hair is already heat damaged that it was gonna ruin it even more because it needs to be bleached, okay fine. Not even 10 mins into the consultation a different customer comes in and she pauses the appointment. The customer even saw that she was interrupting our conversation, but the stylist didn't care and sat the other customer down, paused my appointment and started talking with her... VERY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL AFTER WAITING ABOUT 10 MINS, the customer apologizes to me and leaves. The sylist kept using the term HEAT DAMAGE very freely. I told her I wanted to get rid of the layers I had and even everything out, so she showed me how much hair would be cut. I was terrified because it took me about 5 years to grow the length I had. She literally gave me this ultimatum if I cared more for healthy hair or longevity. Since I was so gullible with this lady GIVING MISINFORMATION I told her to cut it off. I even tried asking her what brands she reccommends for my hair because I feel like shea moisture isn't really working for me anymore. AGAIN WITH THE HEAT DAMAGE TERM, she said how I needed to get products that are for transitioners. I even asked her if she could test my porosity and she said HEAT DAMAGE, CAN'T DO IT. The whole time I was in the salon the other eomployee was vaping right next to me. The whole time I was there the other woman has ZERO customers. She had complained about other customers she either canceled on or passed over because of them either going to their appointments late or that had an afternoon appointment. AGAIN UNPROFESSIONAL!!! LOSING MONEY!!! She finally sat me at the sink, put some minty smelling liquid in my hair, didn't even scrub it in or anything and let it sit for idek how long. Another customer came in, she worked on her. Fast forward to the end, I wasn't happy at all with how the haircut came out. I then asked her how much was it, she said $120. HOW DOES A WASH, DEEP CONDITION AND CUT COME OUT TO THAT PRICE!?!?!?! I asked her if she took card, she said how they only take cash or apple pay. I asked where the closest atm was to them... They had one in the shop that wasn't even working!! I didn't carry cash, I asked her if I could pay with my phone by tapping it since it had my cards on it. She asked if I had an iphone and I said no. So then I asked if I can zelle her. So then she starts repeating the same phrase to me how she only takes cash or apple pay. So then the other "working lady" says how I could zelle her and then she'll zelle it to the stylist that did my hair. WTF? So then I did that and left and now I'm left with this BOTCHED "designer cut." I came here to try a natural hair care place close to home. After researching a few places I landed on Studio 91. After washing and deep conditioning my hair my stylist got to work. I had pictures of the style I was looking for and she did not disappoint. I wanted cornrows to the middle of my scalp (like a mohawk) and two strand twists at the end long enough that I can pull it up on hot days. I've been here twice before and had a good experience.. but they are really starting to fall off and it is very unfortunate. In September I booked an appointment and the day of said appt. I received a text message saying it was canceled. I called to inquire and they said that the stylist that I booked under was unavailable and that I had to reschedule bc everyone else was booked for the day.... ok whatever. I ended up just not going bc I was busy with school and work. I book another appointment for December 6th at 4:30. I show up at 4:30 and the stylist is still working on another head (I know that happens sometimes so I wasn't worried about it). She tells me she'll be done in half an hour. I sit in the shop until 5:42 and the stylist then asks me if I can come back tomorrow (a Monday when the shop is typically closed but supposedly she was going to come in just for me) at 5pm and do my hair for free. Monday comes and I get here at 5pm after 8 hours of work and No one is there. I call, I knock, I messsge the Instagram page.. nothing... me, wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt, sit outside of the shop for an HOUR to no avail. I'm am so upset at the blatant lack of professionalism and the disregard for customer time and effort. She listened to my concerns, where I wanted to go with my hair and analyzed the current state of my hair. She recommended a treatment and a plan to help me get my hair to where I need it. Anyway I had an appointment at 10, i didnt start my hair until abt 12p and I left at abt 3p but I appreciated it because I was squeezed in but it was a LONG day. They took really good care of my hair and the ladies were very very nice. For a wash treatment, trim and flat ironing I paid abt $110. I recently moved to Nassau from Brooklyn and found Studio 91 on yelp and google. It was the only place that did natural hair and that the pics did not look fake or messed up. Believe it or not, LI is not equipped for us African American folk. Anyways, I went it there without an appointment a few weeks back and without thinking twice, they agreed to do my hair. I had great conversations with the women in the salon and the stylists were very kind and talented. It was nice to have my hair washed and cared for the way that it was there. I received a consult and Got all the works. Now, the only thing that kills you is the wait. I waited a long time in between services to get my hair done. But remember I didn't have an appointment. So it might have been different if I did have one. One suggestion I do have for the salon is to have something for the clients that are waiting to do. Maybe television and some water/snacks. I recommend Alysha, she slayed my hair and her customer service is great. The second time I made appointment, Alysha wasn't available. So I made an appointment with the only stylist available. A week after making the appointment she calls me to confirm and make a deposit, and says if she doesn't hear from me she's canceling my appointment. I don't mind putting down a deposit to hold my appointment (spending $200 on box braids I'm good for the money) but she was so rude the entire time she was talking to me; rude enough that I'm letting her cancel the appointment, and spending my coins at another place. read more

I really wanted to love this place being that it's super close to my house and I've been in desperate need of a natural hair stylist. I made an appointment for a Saturday at 1pm, I arrived on time, 10 minutes early to be exact. The lady scheduled to do my hair was still working on someone's hair, so I was barely greeted as I walked. I was then taken to get a wash, the girl who started my wash must have been new to wash hair but either way it was the worse wash I ever had, they couldn't seem to keep the water temperature under control. She then proceeded to wash and condition my hair, this is after I told them I wanted the deep conditioner but she forgot so after she had already towel dried my hair she brings me back to the sink the add deep conditioner to my half dried half, not to mention this is an extra $15. Remind you in the mix of all this the the lady who I had an appointment with is still styling someone else's hair. She never sat me in the chair and gave me any attention and allowed me to discuss my hair issues and concerns which was my initial reason for even coming to an natural hair salon. I only sat under the dryer with the deep conditioner for 5, maybe 10 minutes. At this point I was just ready to leave! So then the lady who I made an appointment with finally makes eye contact with me again, remind you she's still doing someone else's hair but she then washes out my deep conditioner, sits me on a chair that's not near any mirrors, so she's snipping away at my hair and I can't see anything! She must have misunderstood the actual hairstyle I wanted, so she started blowing out my hair and I didn't even want that, I wanted a simple wash and go with a cut. Last but NOT least she decided to add mousse to my hair and it was a disaster! My hair was soooooooooooo dry and hard!! I literally had to wash it out that night! I spent $75 at this place even tipped my stylist and she didn't deserve it! This was hands down the WORST service I've ever received at a hair salon, I could have went to so may other places and got the same thing for $35-$40!! UPDATE; I called to schedule an appointment, after the first time wasn't the best & the owner answered! I made an appointment for a consultation and servicee for my daughter to have a Natural hair care style done for her senior pictures. She had my daughter sit for 2.5 hours, only initially telling her it would be about an hour. When i arrived after 2.5 hours she was extremely rude and nasty telling me she was hungry and her twin daughters were home hungry. I went to another salon to get my hair braid and they screwed it up I had to remove them because they were so tight and not even the style I wanted. My first time here I got my hair done by Alysha. She did box braids for me for an upcoming vacation. She was on time and I didn't have to wait past my appointment which I appreciated. She has a great personality and also taught me a lot about my hair. I love how they are all about hair health at this salon. As a natural hair girl that is extremely important to me for the health of my curls and protecting my curl pattern. She tried different conditioners to see which one my hair liked most and gave me tips on different ways to detangle and help with my hair concerns. She also did a steam treatment which I loved and gave my hair a lot of moisture. The braids came out great and they were not too heavy on my scalp. This is strange cause I've gotten my hair done at the salon many times before the pandemic by Ananoda. Ananoda wasn't there today and I did not book her (my fault), but if you've gotten you hair done by Ananoda in the past you KNOW she is so professional and so kind. Idk who was working there today, but they were RUDE and they were not clean, especially the brushes/combs. I watch one women use the same comb on 3 different heads. From booking to cashing out, my experience was amazing. I called early Saturday morning and was able to get a same day appointment. Once there I was greeted by the owner (I believe) who promptly washed my hair. The best part about the wash was she explained every product that went into my hair and what is does. Second best was the wash itself. So I was there for a "big chop". I had a hard time finding a salon because I'm picky but Alysha did her thang! She didn't butcher my hair. She went over it to make sure it was even. Gave me advice about what kind of products I should use and what my regimen was. She washed my hair and did a little twist thing and told me how long the style will last. How to maintain it and what to do to modify it. This is one of the best hair salons in Baldwin. The stylists are very kind, sweet, polite and pleasant. They educate you about hair care and are very open and willing to work with you regarding what the best options suit you regarding your hair. The salon is very clean and the atmosphere is wonderful. I wasn't greeted nor did anyone say I'll be right with you as they both had customers in the chair. After one full minute I left, again- without either Stylist even being courteous enough to acknowledge me as a potential customer. The stylists were super friendly and accommodating so the personal service was okay. My hair however was not. I described to the young lady that I am a former cancer patient and that this is the FIRST time that I am doing a silk press so I was basically unfamiliar with the current status of my hair. After washing and treating my hair she began to blow dry and then flat iron my hair ( silk press protocol). AT NO point before completion did she say or ask me if I wanted to trim or cut my hair as my hair looked HORRIBLE! I understand now (after the hair was done, I complained about my dissatisfaction and she explained WHY my hair looks like THAT) that the silk press wouldn't take well and it wouldn't look "nice" because I was in desperate need of a cut and style for the hair to take any kind of shape. This I COMPLETELY understand but I feel as the professional, shouldn't this have been communicated to me at some point before the end?! It was obvious she was struggling with my hair but when she said " I'm done" I was completely mortified and even she said she didn't like it on me. ( no disrespect,but I looked like an 80 year old aunty-had to find some levity in the situation)Again, for someone who had long, lucious locs before chemo to now have to deal with THIS hair experience was disheartening! I really think she was afraid to cut my hair because she never even gave me an option to! I had to ask " do I need to make another appt to do that.....?"Another young lady came after we were done and tried to fix it by doing a diff kind of curl and styled it diff but at that point my hair was fried with heat (and again no cut!). I appreciated the assistance but I was already so disappointed with my experience that I just wanted to leave. On top of that, I had an job interview the next day! Smh. The first woman said that I am " growing my hair" as I expressed to her I wanted to see the length but come on! I feel again as the professional she should have given me an option to cut it into a cute style as it ended up looking insane! Both ladies also said that I probably need to get "used to the hairstyle"and mentioned something about the rain outside which really made me realize that they missed the point of my complaint and kind of offended me in the process- I walked around with NO HAIR for months and rocked it so that was absolutely NOT the issue at the moment. I had medium box braids and they were mid back and did not hurt one bit! My braids were also very neat. Recently moved from NYC to Nassau county and Ive been searching for a salon that specializes in natural hair. I found Studio 91 on IG and liked the work that I saw from Alysha and Anoda. Anoda was available for a wash and go and I selected her. Something simple just to ease my way in to the salon so she could see what my hair was about and could suggested other styles that would look good on me going forward. I was shampooed by another lady and was told that Anoda would be right with me. Next thing you know, the same lady that washed my hair started doing my hair and Anoda was giving her instructions on what to do and she said to me "don't worry you'll be good." Sitting there confused I thought to myself, maybe she will take over in a few minutes? To my surprise Anoda said her goodbyes to her colleagues and left for the day without saying anything to me. I booked the appointment with her and not the person that shampooed my hair. There were two other stylists working and one of them kept checking on my hair while I was under the dryer. I was told that I have heat damage because not all my curls were defined and the product that was used in my hair doesn't work well on every one. She showed me another product that would possibly be better for me and I took a picture of it. But by then it didn't matter because my hair didn't come out as expected! I'm very selective about who does my hair and although the lady that did my hair was very nice, she wasn't the one I made the appointment with. If Anoda couldn't do my hair, I should've been contacted prior to my appointment and told so. If something came up last minute (and I understand things do happen) at the very least I should been asked if it was ok for someone else to do my hair once I got there.
