We decided to book a Mosaic class during our holiday to Europe...it was fantastic!
Not only was it informative on the history and the making of mosaics, you also get a little taste of mosaic making and how tough it actually is. Our instructors Sophia and Sarah (hope I spelled their names correctly) were personable, funny, charming and knowledgeable.
We arrived at 1000am to a cute little studio in which we were given a short class on the history of mosaics and then we were given a choice of a simple mosaic pattern. You are given instruction and the tools/material needed to make some art and then you are told to get to work!
You look at the little squares of color and think pppssshhhttt - I can do that. This should be pretty easy. Now, think of the game operation, Jenga, and Tetris put together, while on a caffeine high from coffee....that will set "the tone" of the class. There was some cursing, frustration and growls during the creation of said masterpiece but in the end it all worked out. *sweating and panting with exertion and jitters*
Well - of course I had to make it difficult, because that's what I do. I ended up making smaller pieces, which took longer, which led to me needing 3 people to help me finish in time! Remember you are on a time limit and believe me, the time slips away fast!
We purchased some mosaic making kits to take home with us because we enjoyed it so much.
Listening to Italian music, making mosaics and just enjoying the time made it go by super fast. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to do something different and interesting while visiting the beautiful city of Rome. read more
