My favourite (and first) tobogganing experience in Austria…read more Just an hour outside of Vienna you will find this world class ski/snowboard mountain. But for me the jewel in the crown is the toboggan run. Three kilometres of downhill, speedy, curvy, hold on to your hat sledding fun. And with the added bonus of being floodlit at night. Exactly what I like best, something a little crazy and a lot of fun. The boring stuff: sled hire costs €6.50 and an all night pass costs around €30 euros; opening times at night are from 6pm to 10pm (Thursday-Saturday) and 9pm (Sunday to Wednesday). So now to the action. This is a very modern, well built, very well maintained operation. There are literally hundreds of sleds to hire and plenty of staff on hand to ask questions of. The enclosed ski lift (cable car) ride lasts about 3 or 4 minutes and takes you high onto the mountain top. On exit organised chaos ensues as skiers, snowboards, tobogganists and those just for the view or for a drink or two emerge from the cars onto the slopes. Signs abound for which part of the mountain you are to use but as they all mostly start from the same point it can get a bit hairy. From there you are whisked down the mountains at speeds exceeding 100kph (it seemed) with only your shoes and luck to brake and steer you through 90 degree turns over half meter high bumps and through tunnels until you end up half way down the mountain at an outside bar and indoor restaurant. Here you can stock up on courage juice or warm up with something to eat and then its down down down again! Word of warning though, at the end of the run there is a fairly high, though smallish hill that requires a lot of braking unless you want to end up upside down in a heap against the crash barriers! As this is the first time I have done this all I can say that this is the most fun I have had going down a mountain in my life. The price tag of €30ish might seem a bit high but for that you get to go up and down as many times as you want or your body can handle. Its well worth it! Just a short drive out of Vienna and easily accessible there really is no reason not to go.
