I'm sure it is completely ignored by its neighbours, and by the vast majority of people who visit Cold Knap beach in Barry. Nevertheless, here is Barry's oldest scheduled ancient monument, over 700 years old. The site was known about in the early 1960's, when construction work on the Waterside Hotel unearthed some Roman remains, but no formal excavation was carried out. Another opportunity came with the demolition of the YMCA hostel in 1979 on the site immediately to the west, and this time a formal excavation was carried out. To everyone's surprise, they found a major public building, dating from the late Third Century or early Fourth Century AD. A building of 22 rooms, arranged around a central courtyard, with cellars and what may have been a watchtower, were excavated. It is clear that the quality of building materials was high, with dressed stone and a tiled roof. After the excavation, the site was conserved, and a small viewing platform was built, complete with interpretation boards. It's exact purpose is unknown, and it appears that the building was never completed as intended. The best guess is that it was intended as a sort of official guest house and possible storage facility for users of the Imperial Roman Post System, located by a small inlet, and opposite a known harbour on the English side of the Bristol Channel. To-day, nothing remains much above the foundations, but you can clearly see the layout of all 22 rooms, including the cellar, and the area of the courtyard. The interpretation panels, though badly weathered, provide a helpful description, plan and a picture recreating what the building may have looked like. The entrance is off the small footpath, immediately behind the public toilets at Cold Knap Terrace Car Park. In the summer, it's possible to take a quick look at this little piece of ancient history, before enjoying an ice-cream and a stroll along the promenade

Set against the cacophony of one of the world music CDs (taken straight off the shelf), my time in Waterlily was the highlight of my morning, which had been marked by rain, wind and freezing temperatures. The owner had popped out for a few minutes, so her mate was watching the shop, and this chatty lady was talking to me as if she had known me for years. I dug through the gift wrap, and when I failed to find the one I wanted (which was tacked to the wall as a part of a display), she took that one down and rolled it up for me. I'm a sucker for vintage-style goodies, especially when they're on sale. Waterlily is a bit like Polka Dot in Mermaid Quay, but more reasonably priced. I managed to buy two sets of gift wrap (boasting swear words and all!) and five specialty greeting cards for less than £4. I am so coming back here.

Arnos Vale cemetery absolutely fascinates me - its war memorials, elaborate tombs of Indian maharaja and big Cliftonite family mauseleoums. There's nowt creepy about it - with butterflies and birds and flowers growing over everything. They're even buidling a multi-million pound new glass visitor centre and restoring all the Grade II listed monuments that are dotted about the place. You can get lost for several hours in amongst the stones. The vale is great for stretching your legs and broadening your historical knowledge, and close enough to Bath rd, the Paintworks and Banco lounge for a quick drink afterwards if you fancy it.

Nothing beats a good cemetery!…read more I can't say I would make a special trip to visit the cemetery (I don't have any loved ones residing here) but we were passing it one day in the car, the sun was shining, so we thought we'd have a little walk around. There is something quite absorbing about being able to read snippets of people's lives, try and work out what they might have been like, the plot thickens when you sometimes find connected people buried side by side. I never did the whole grave yard at night thing in my teenage years, but I would certainly recommend a visit in the day should you be that neck of the woods.

The choice of men's wear here is particularly poignant with a really pretty impressive array of shirts and tops. They even make an effort to search for the gentleman's clothing and let me know too, "we've got some delightful Yves Saint Laurent stuff coming in soon" they told me last time. The rest of the shop is stacked floor to ceiling with bargains and discounts so it's well worth a look in here.

It could be because Bristolian's feel so passionate about this charity and the work that they do that their shops are so positive and a pleasure to visit. It's obvious too see how much locals care by the quality and abundance of the donations they give. For those of you who hold the charity dear to your heart - you're in luck because there's four (that's right - FOUR!) St Peter's shops in Clifton Village. What I like about these chain of shops, is that if you're looking for something specific, they'll call around to the other shops to see if they've got it in stock! This particular branch on Cotham Hill is the best of the four for bric-a-brac and homeware.

This is the one for her and a very good one at that. The archetypal charity shop is this one, an ideal venue to source some really cool and chic bits of retro gear. The shelves are stacked and the hangers are bulging full as hoards of young students trawl the treasures. There are a couple of books and videos and such like, but it's mostly ladies fashion fashion fashion.
