As someone who has only gone to a Catholic mass... this is such a culture shock, but in a great way. I appreciate the structure, the friendliness, the warmness of this community. Everyone is outgoing and kind and you really do feel a sense of community and feeling welcome. The sermons are a full circle experience that really do relate to scripture and life.. it intertwines so well and is always relevant.. one can truly appreciate that. read more

It is hard to comment or review a church but you can do with this as you may. The the building is lovely. The people seem passionate about their faith. The message is live streamed and I do not enjoy not meeting my pastor. The music was not of my liking but I can understand that everyone grew up differently but if your looking to be a diverse church maybe having diversity in your worship would be great. This church seems young and ambitious. I visited two separate occasions about 3 weeks a part and they were still talking about their new building during the sermon. I love what you all are doing and pray you are bringing people to Christ through all your work but just does not seem like a good fit. I like to know my faith leaders and meet their family as well. read more

Substance Church has had a profound impact in shaping me into the man I am today. This is a church community full of people that are passionate about Jesus. And they're passionate about loving the people around them. During a precarious stretch in my life several years ago, I turned to this fast-growing, youthful church in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis. I knew I was looking for God, but I wasn't optimistic about finding Him, especially at a church (ironic, I know). I thought I would have to learn about Him through reading books written by dead people. I'm not knocking that route to knowing God, but I had hit my limits with head knowledge about God. I needed to see people with changed lives. And that's what I found at Substance. This is a church that won't let you sit comfortably in the congregation, as a spectator taking in the event. At Substance, you are drawn in to the community, and you are CHALLENGED to grow in your faith, and in your development as a person. I tried to sit idly by, but it didn't work. There are too many loving, life-giving people across this church - they wouldn't let me linger in my depressed state for very long! Pastor Peter Haas is an energetic, dynamic, charismatic teacher, and his sermons are rooted in the Bible. The music/worship is contemporary (and that term doesn't do it justice; progressive would be a better label), rocking, and heartfelt. People are friendly and welcoming. Not a "stuffy" church but they know the scriptures and what they teach us. Music before the message is upbeat and helps you get into the spirt. Sermons are always Bible based and thought provoking. If your new, old or just curious about Christianity this is the place for you. read more

You are valued if you volunteer until you they don't want you anymore. That would be fine if someone (intern, staffer, pastor) were to come up to me and talk to me but instead they decided instead to freeze me out. They stopped emailing me as a captain but instead emailed someone else. I guess they wanted me to leave, I just wish they had the courage to say so to my face. Here I am volunteering my Sundays to help the church and so as soon as I felt unwelcome I left. Not a single person at the church bothered to send me a thank you, instead they just pretended like I never existed. That shows enough about the church and possibly about evangelical Christianity, they only care if you are a carbon copy about them. If you aren't a member of their beliefs or church then they will treat you like you do not exist. I've emailed staffers that I have respect in about how I was treated because maybe I am mistaken, maybe this was an accident, and their response was to flat out ignore me. Not a single one responded. The most I got is from a pastor that wasn't on staff at the time that reached out to say that "Christians are flawed," and was willing to listen to me and placate me. Long story short, I'm very content sleeping in on Sundays and watching football or doing whatever I want. I won't be working in ministry ever again, nor will I be contributing to any church's contribution plate. read more

If you are looking for a great Christian Church in the Twin Cities! I highly recommend Substance Church. They have subgroups that pretty much do anything you want to do ... small groups, go out to eat, skiing, BBQ, volleyball, ... I just moved to California, but went to this church for about a year in the Twin Cities and LOVED it. Looking for a similar church in San Francisco. This is a young church, the people are warm and welcoming, and have things going on every night where you can meet new people and make friends! read more

This church is warm, and welcoming with beautiful warship to enthusiastic preaching. Today was my first time here, and I am planning to continue this church because of how amazing the people are. Greatest church I have ever attended. Everyone is genuinely kind, not fake smiles who don't care. I'm new in town and they put in serious effort to help me get connected with the church community around my new home. Pastor Peter is fantastic. Substance has an app with years of past sermons, I listen to them all the time on my phone because they are that great and relevant. I used to snooze through the sermon at church in the past, but now I will literally sometimes go to multiple services in one weekend to hear the message again! Lastly, I had the opportunity to meet Pastor Peter and his wife Pastor Carolyn and their kids. What a wonderful family. Definitely not just putting on a happy facade on Sunday mornings, this entire church community is absolutely overflowing with the love of God. Best decision of my life! read more

The things that were written here are funny as Never have the experiences of the the negative comments happened to me ever...With the writings of non biblical things are the main focus nor that this church is finance driven. I have invited someone to church, every time that I get a yes that person enjoys what Peter and the speaker had to say....They have returned again and again and even a whole family comes because I invited someone to try it out for the first time... I thoroughly am convinced that the heaps of connections I had made here relatively quick are a blessing to me and although I am 41, I receive tons of warmth and friendship from different folk who are not exactly alike... I attended this church for a little over a year (I switched churches mostly because of moving out of the area). I met some great people at Substance and if you are looking to meet others through small (or as they call them) Subgroups this is a great place to be. The church does need to work on communication for all church events (such as their Old Spaghetti factory holiday dinner and the annual boat cruise) as many of their events are announced last minute leaving people who can't plan activities without notice on the outside looking in. I do disagree with the previous comment about them "always asking for money". They had have committment wknds but they are only a couple of times a year. The women's ministry team does need to improve in communication/responding to concerns. I did have an unfortunate experience with this group in the Fall where i felt my concerns were blown off. I do not know if these issue have been addressed in the 6 months since i left through. The church does have some growing pains it needs to work through but overall was a good experience. Pastor Peter delivers powerful messages and I know there has been a lot of changes in staffing. Pastor Peter's messages are relevant to today's world as well as biblically supported. The church seemed to be lacking in outreach projects (outside of subgroups) vs churches of a similar size such a Eaglebrook. This might change as they continue to make changes to the church. Most of the campuses are set in the Ramsey County and North Metro areas which makes it harder to attend if you live in the Minneapolis area or Northwest Metro. read more

Substance church is the best church I have ever been to. I am in my 20s and am selfishly busy...to be honest it is hard to attend church at times when I have other plans that may "be more fun". This though to me is humanly selfish as a few hours a week to attend a gathering in Gods name cant be too difficult no matter how busy you are. With that being said attending substance church is not a "chore" it is not some routine that I "have" to go to as a Christian or have to force myself out of bed for. Substance church is so engaging and fun it is a blast to attend...I look forward to it! Pastor Peter is seriously hilarious...like he should be a comedian on the side I swear. Pastor Peter and the rest of the team make church so engaging, interesting, exciting, they are all down to earth and apply sermons to the practical world we all live in. Come as you are, wear anything, be anyone, think anything...you will be so welcome here. During worship I really connect with God...I feel the holy spirit every time...its a beautiful thing. The sermons are not boring...you are entertained and captivated by the message. Attend substance a little or a lot, connect with no one or connect with a LARGE group of supportive members, get involved with the church or don't...it really is all up to you with no pressure. Man I really cannot express how awesome this church is. If you are thinking about it...just go dude! you wont regret it! :) read more
