It's funny. I used to live on the Danforth in Toronto and one of my favorite places to eat was The New York Diner, which offered some of the best greek food on the Danforth. The owners inherited the name and never changed it. Sues reminds me a little of that place. There doesn't appear to be a Sue, and it's more Greek than NY, and more lunch counter than diner. I'm in Buffalo on business so, as usual, I googled "best lunch (town I'm in)" and saw rave reviews for Sue's. Here's what I found: Service Very nice, very friendly, very fast. A+ Food And here's the problem. I got a Chicken Slovaki wrap. I had heard great things. It was the first thing on the menu. Seems perfect. Unfortunately, the wrap was...just there, the grilled chicken was far from grilled (just kinda mushy and crappy tasting), the greek dressing (wtf is greek dressing doing on there?!) tasted like it came out of a packet. The only good thing was they didn't skimp on the feta cheese (although it wasn't great feta cheese....I guess they decided to make up for crappy food by giving a lot of it). It came with a pickle (perfectly fine pickle) and a side of chips (chips looked fine, but I didn't eat any). The only good thing I can say is that the food wasn't such bad quality that I felt sick after eating it. I don't know if this is an indictment on this place or Yelpers in this area, but seriously, if this is the best Buffalo has to offer for lunch, I'm quite glad I'm only here on business and won't need to try to eat here too often. read more

As a downtown worker...I LOVE Sue's! They are super convenient to the Central Business District, inexpensive, fresh, delicious, have healthy and vegetarian options, and are very personable. Their hummus is very, very good (garlicky, but creamy), their grapeleaves are flavorful, served warm, and highly recommended, the lentil salad has an amazing spice to it, and the tabouli is very garlicky and good. I'd suggest trying their vegetarian platter to sample their specialties (a side salad, hefty serving of hummus, pita, and grapeleaves). I've never had a "bad" thing there. Their vegetarian chili has a good amount of spice and is great for a snowy Buffalo day. They have plenty of vegetarian/vegan offerings that are filling and have a lot of flavor. Sue's is the perfect place to meet a friend to visit or just to grab something healthy and quick for a lunch on the run. One time, I forgot to pack dip in my lunch (horror!) and they were kind enough to sell me a small amount of their amazing hummus, which usually isn't on the menu. The owners are so nice and patient when you are ordering and always thank you for your business. I agree with all the great reviews. My 5-star rating is in comparison to other delis. They get this rating on the food alone. I had the corned beef Reuben. I'm don't like corned beef all that much, but this was recommended by other yelpers. The Reuben is awesome. Awesome meet, awesome bread, and great ingredients. The one thing that stands out even more than the great food is how much they appreciate your service. I believe the gentlemen that runs the cash register is the owner and he is so appreciative of your businesses. He always says thank you when you are checking out and you can tell he means it. There has to be a reason Sue's is the only place with a line during lunchtime, and there is. Their food is delicious and the service friendly. I come by for lunch during work about half the time because it's just that good. I haven't been going to Sue's long, but I've already found my favorite items. The avocado wrap is quite delicious, with a nice injection of Asian flavors with sprouts and miso dressing. However, as has been stated in other reviews, I have a bias towards the homemade salads. The tuna pasta is there day after day, but the lentil rice, seafood salad, and Mexican rice are all very very good. That said, I will try to start exploring the rest of the diverse menu. It's almost overwhelming how many options there are: salad, soups, wraps, and sandwiches. It serves as a reminder of how great Sue's Deli is. read more

I've worked close to here for almost 10 years. I don't know what took me so long to finally try this place, as I've only heard great things. In the summer they offer outdoor seating. They have ample indoor seating where clean table abound and free glasses of water are available. The staff could not be nicer. I love this place! I come back a few times a month because the quality is there every single time. The prices are spot on and my souvlaki wrap comes with chips and a pickle at the right price. Someone reviewed that this was the original owner of Katz's deli in NYC! I know Katz's deli! Their folks would roll over laughing if you tried to compare these two!!! My significant other ordered the Avocado Wrap with a side of pasta salad. She liked it very much. I also tasted it and it was good! The pasta salad was ordinary at best with over cooked mushy pasta! She wanted to rate this place three stars so there you go!!! I ordered a pastrami(aka cold pastrami) on a hard roll. The meat was less than average and the roll was an ordinary nothing roll! NOT a NY roll from a Jewish deli. Ordinary would be a kind way of saying the sandwich was not great. The prices were reasonable. We had expected more but alas another disappointing venture into Buffalo NY cuisine! So boys and girls I would have given this two stars but as you can see agreement makes for a better relationship! Save up your nickles and dimes and go to NYC and try the real Katz's deli downtown Manhattan. Or better yet try the Carnegie Deli uptown or in Vegas. I couldn't put my finger on exactly what ingredient might have been added to throw it off, but I just didn't like it. This place was packed at 1pm on a Wednesday. The line moved quickly though. I ordered their Waldorf chicken salad which was amazing and got the other half with their daily spinach greek salad also amazing. I opted for the soup salad combo so I tried the cream of mushroom. It was delicious and actually had real chunks of mushrooms in it. My friend got one of the pastas with the Greek salad and she said hers is amazing to. The portion sizes were huge and I had enough to eat for lunch the next day. On our way out I went back for one of their homemade chocolate chip cookies which was soft and gooey inside and crisp from the outside just the way I like them. They also had homemade baklava and rice pudding. If you work downtown this is definitely a lunch spot you should try. We will definitely be visiting again! read more

Only thing that actually was made was falafel which shouldn't take more than a couple mins. Food wasn't that good. Falafel was very below average. I've been coming here on a regular basis for the better part of 5 years, and not only is the food really tasty, but everything they serve is fresh and healthy. The specials change on a daily basis, and a good choice if you can't decide what to get.....I usually check out the website to see what's new and exciting before heading over there. Warning: it can get a little busy during the prime-time lunch rush, so either go early or sometime after 1:15 PM, if you don't feel like waiting around for your order....or you can call ahead if you're just picking up. I usually go with the small salad and split it up between two items available. It comes standard with a quarter piece of pita. My all time favorite is the chicken Waldorf salad...it's unique, healthy, and just plain awesome! The super veggie, hummus veggie, or lite veggie pita pocket are my other all-time favs. It has "super" in it's name for good reason. It's a large size fresh salad stuffed into an extra large half pita, served with chips, side of tasty miso dressing, and fresh orange slice (perfect ending to a lunch). Chicken Shawarma is another great choice, a perfect blend of flavors with a surprisingly spicy kick. On colder days, soups are always a good choice. I usually order a bowl of chicken noodle, Hungarian mushroom, or vegetarian chili depending on what's on the daily menu. If you decide to eat in they have a complimentary pitcher of water in the dining area if you don't want to order a juice or soft drink. They also serve breakfast, but I've never had a chance to make it there to try it....hopefully someday. This is a great place for lunch. My work is very close to this 'mom n pop' lunch place. The service is quick, wide variety of fresh salad every day at least 4 to5 of them. Spinach pasta, tabouleh, chicken rice with almonds and chicken curry (mild touch of indian spices) and many more.. U can take a small/ big salad and take a combination of any. You could also order from their wide variety of menu items-chicken shwarma, falafel, pita pockets..they renovated the eat-in area. They have two locations. All the reviews on this place are absolute lies. I was visiting Buffalo for the weekend and wanted to experience some of the food scene. I saw that this place had really good reviews so I went. That was mistake number one. Mistake number two came when I ordered the chicken souvlaki because another yelper raved about how it was the best they have ever had. They must have never eaten a chicken souvlaki before because the chicken was absolutely tasteless. I opened my wrap to look at the chicken and, just as I suspected, the chicken wasn't seasoned...AT ALL. I could have found better food at a mall food court for less. Don't waste your time going to this place. I might just be one negative view among a bunch of raves, but I am usually a very generous critic. This is the first one star I have ever given and this place certainly deserves it. read more

Went here on a Monday morning for a late lunch. I got the chicken souvlaki wrap and my brother got a Reuben. Both of us thought the food was delicious--some of the freshest sandwiches we've ever had. Food was relatively inexpensive--under $7 each. The people taking our order were friendly and helpful in explaining the menu. Our food also came out within 3 minutes. Next I will tell you: I am a food snob and I eat as Sue's 3 times a week for lunch and I have not started going there for breakfast...YES BREAKFAST! I went to Sue's for the first time today, and got a chicken breast sand which. The price was really reasonable, and the staff was really friendly. I also noticed that they have the cheapest desserts in town ($2 and change). I didn't try a dessert, but next time I go, I will try the cheesecake. They also have pieces of baklava that are bigger than my fist! The atmosphere is clearly for an in-and-out lunch crowd, but the tables were clean that there is a lot of natural light in the dining area. I think I found my new downtown lunch spot. read more

Boy, what a lunch! I ordered the chicken noodle soup and was in heaven. It was SO yummy. I also got the egg salad veggie pita. It was huge, and I could not finish it. It came with miso dressing which was different, but tasty. We waited in a bit of a line, but it didn't seem too long since we could stand and decide from the large selection of lunches on their menu while we waited. Dear Albert, I crave your souvlaki wrap. That is all. That said - this is a solid spot for lunch in downtown Buffalo. It has good prices, a wide-ranging menu, and a seating area. The food is good but it is not, in my opinion, a "gem" or anything incredibly special. It is popular mostly because it is one of only 2 or 3 food options in the Theatre District. It is also locally- and independently-owned which is always a plus. Allow 15-20 minutes between the time you order and the time you get your food. I work across the street but often avoid this place because I don't feel like spending a 1/4 of my lunch hour waiting for my food. Sometimes it's faster, but you never know. Note that they have recently moved down the street a couple of storefronts, so they are now directly adjacent to the Shea's Theatre lobby. read more

I've eaten at Sue's N.Y. Deli every weekday for as long as I can remember. I can say in all honesty that I have never had anything there that wasn't absolutely delicious. We've all had chicken soup, potato salad or souvlaki. However, the spin that they put on even the most common of dishes is truly something special. They have a large selection of fresh salads and soups every day on top of the wide variety of sandwiches and meals. Albert, Claudette, Mora, Nadine and the rest of the crew put an enormous amount of effort into making everything perfect. Dealing with them is every bit as pleasurable as the food.
