We had a great weekend full of wilderness trail's activities. We spent most of Saturday kayaking on…read morethe White River. Heidi drove us to our drop off point, detailing pertinent information about navigating the Rapids of the river as well as entertaining us with stories of the locale. The trip itself was great. We opted to kayak both the upper and lower White which was a little tiresome as I haven't been working out my arms much lately. I was apprehensive of the Rapids as I have never white water kayaked but Heidi calmed my nerves with how thorough she was in explaining the river. It isn't true white water kayaking but it was a lot more fun than all of the river kayaking I have done to date (which is a fair amount). On Sunday we went fly fishing with Pete. Pete was very hands on and really does a great job at explaining the techniques involved. Although our form was probably lacking, he stayed positive and supportive throughout the whole trip. We changed locations a few times in order to improve our chances. And between the two of us we caught 5 fish, which was very satisfying for us as we were complete beginners. We released all of our catches so that we didn't take from the stock of the river and could preserve the ecosystem. I really appreciate his emphasis on the need for conservation. We can't wait to go back in the fall for hunting season with Wilderness Trails.

Pete is great. He is a super nice guy, knowledgeable, gets you on the river quickly and is…read moregenuinely trying to help you catch fish. We went on a 90 degree day (not great conditions for fly fishing) and were getting no action for the first 1.5 hours. He ran to get his car and took us to a private spot he had found earlier in the week. We drove another 15ish minutes and BANG..... showtime. We landed 6 fish in less than an hour. Too much fun.

We did not know what to expect, and it all worked out. I think there may be two ways to get here. …read more . one is off the main-ish road, and another is through a scenic road by a horse farm. Anyway, the horse farm way was beautiful, but not open in the winter. . . so we backtracked and went around. There don't appear to be bathrooms here, so keep that in mind! We went with the intent to rent fat bikes, but the woman working here recommended that we do snowshoeing instead because the bikes were going to be hard to maneuver given that the snow wasn't super-packed. So, we had a really nice time snowshoeing (our first time) through very groomed trails. There were signs along the way, and the woman working showed us the map, so we had a picture of that. It was really really pretty - very scenic. Lots of trees, gorgeous sunlight filtering through the trees, very few people that we came across, and lots of interesting animal tracks to look at. Very fun.

She came home with wonderful memories of the camp community, and revealed in describing to us her daily routine -which included chores, Quaker inspired silent meetings and songs, and swimming in the lake every single day! When they finally extracted a positive test from a cabin mate of my twin boys, the 5 remaining cabin kids were separated from the camp, made to wear masks indoors and out for 10 days. About half of their session. Despite testing negative consistently. When asked why in the year 2023 they were going well beyond CDC guidelines with their policy, there were no good answers. "Unfortunately, Covid isn't behind us yet, but we gave your cabin an oreo cheesecake and they loved it." Farm and Wilderness could be a great version of itself, outdoors and unplugged and accepting and spirited, but unfortunately they are entangled in a strange ideology where they think they can control what is not controllable. Predictably it backfired. Every kid ended up with a debilitating case of norovirus at the end of the session and my twins came back upset from a summer of isolation and pariah-like exclusion from the campers. Lasting bonds weren't made and refunds weren't offered. It's their policy to make, obviously, it's just not grounded in the child's actual experience. It's grounded in fear.
