oh hi, this is my new fav store ever. i could live in it and still find something new and beautiful to touch and look at everyday. it space is open and clean. the mix of brick and wood mixed with the soft lighting is completely flattering and inviting. the clothing is to die for! everything is organized and visually pleasing. i wanted to touch everything! i had to clasp my hands behind my back the entire time bc i didnt want to get anything dirty haha. the mix of vintage and modern was set up wonderfully. the cute vintage shoes displayed neatly along the ground with the cute vintage handbags displayed neatly along shelves above the clothing kept my eyes moving. the woman working was so nice and fun and wonderful. she was really great to chat with! i def couldnt afford anything here but Sugarcube got me really excited and inspired for clothing and style in general. read more

I'd been hearing good things about this place for years, but it wasn't until recently that I actually decided to check it out for myself. Upon entering, I was a little overwhelmed-- the store is huge and there was soooo much inventory! Since I am the kind of shopper that likes to look at EVERYTHING, I immediately knew I was going to be there for awhile. As I perused the racks, Elisa (the bubbly owner) would periodically come over to show me things she thought I might like based on other pieces I had pulled out. This was nice because (she obviously has an amazing memory and) she would bring me the last pieces of things that happened to be in my size. I found the assortment to be wonderfully eclectic; there were wide varieties of cool lounge-wear, on-trend denim, hats, jewelry, carefully curated vintage, going-out tops, and cute cocktail dresses. And accessories. And outerwear. Out of my 3 purchases, I wear two of them constantly (and always get complimented on my deconstructed eternity scarf, and flowered baby-blue hat) and am waiting for the perfect occasion to wear the third piece (a fringed kimono top with back cut-outs). I just had a wonderful experience at this boutique! The customer service was above and beyond and helped me tremendously. I have an event tomorrow and was hectically shopping last minute. The gentleman there helped me pick out tops, gave honest critiques and we found the PERFECT top and necklace for me. I brought a CVS bag into the store. The lady who worked there followed me around the store the whole time I shopped. They didn't ask to hold my bag and instead watched me. It was hard to shop when I felt like I was being watched less than three feet away. I quickly left and won't be going back. I get that security is an issue, but they made me feel like a criminal the whole time. read more

Having recently relocated from Melbourne, Australia I had hoped to scope out what Philly had to offer in the way of unique clothing and original pieces. Sugarcube and Old City in general was an absolute breath of fresh air. I fell in-love with the space and visual merchandising. Together with the lighting and the friendly staff, it was like being at a friend's place just trying on some clothes. There was a great selection of modern asymmetrical pieces and well maintained vintage shoes and bags. I picked up a great one-off muted olive shoulder bag which the staff ended up taking off a few $$ just because I asked! Definitely a favorite! read more

When I described a dress I was looking for that they didn't have, the sales girl offered to ask the owner to look in her "private stash." The vintage can get pricey, but you can always browse! Worth a look, just bought two of their own brand of men's trousers, perfectly engineered, perfect classic fit, they are sharp and sturdy standards that I will wear often. I'm hoping they will expand their line to jeans and shirts. Staff is helpful without being pushy. Love love love read more

This place is awesome! Tons of cool brands you won't find in department stores and a super friendly staff that is totally willing to help you look for a specific item. It's a little pricier than most people would like, but the brands are quality and you're paying the price of finding a new brand that you probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise. I've visited Sugarcube on several occasions and purchased two things the first time I went in. The store has a lot of great pieces though it is very tightly packed. As much as I like the clothing and jewelry, I will never return to this store again. Here's why: I visited the store yesterday evening with two friends. We had just come from another store on the block (Lost and Found, which is amazing!) and had two shopping bags. The man behind the counter very rudely asked to take our bags. We absolutely understand that stores often request bags to be checked but the way this man requested the bags was unbelievably rude. When we hesitated, the man went into a tirade about how the store is in an "urban environment" and he was there alone to manage the store and that it was friday night with lots of shoppers (mind you, there are three other people in the store) and that it's totally acceptable to hold on to customers shopping bags. Then, to make matters worse, he goes to the front of the store, locks the door and calls his partner on the phone to complain about how the customers are giving him a hard time and how he had to lock up because "he's so over it!" We quickly got our bags and left. As we walked out, I ran into a co-worker and loudly said "don't ever go in there- the man who works there is mean!" The man then made a horrible face at me, threw his arms up in the air and followed us out to the street. I yelled back at him that he didn't need to be rude. And, I gave him the finger. Do NOT go to Sugarcube unless: 1. You don't care about social skills/niceties 2. You care about social skills/niceties but you care about cool clothes more and the idea of financially supporting this asshole doesn't bother you, Or 3. You enjoy watching meltdowns and have nothing better to do on a Friday evening! I suggest you go to Lost and Found, Vagabond or Third Street Habit. It is over priced merchandise with a owner who makes you feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Sugarcube is a huge boutique with lots and lots of clothes. My only complaint was that it was hard to browse since the clothes are all crammed together. Make sure you go in with empty hands since you'll have to work hard to get to your favorite pieces. It would have been nice to have a bit more space to actually see each piece on its own, instead of yanking each item out from the rack and not knowing what you'd see next. While there's a huge selection of unique pieces the prices were a bit steep for my liking, but that's to be expected for unique boutique items. To be honest, I preferred Geisha House across the street with a smaller selection, but easier to browse setting and cute summery dresses. read more

I have never made a post on Yelp! before, because I never encountered such a negative experience with customer relations before. We chose to visit this store on our recent trip to Philadelphia from a recommendation by a friend who knew the place years back. Immediately upon entering, we were charmed by the cute hats (my sister was about to buy one), and beautiful clothing. One minute later the man working there (seemed to be a manager) started an argument by raising his voice with hostility, condescendingly questioning something someone had said -- Someone made a comment about the policy requiring us to give up our shopping bags, wondering if it was to reduce shoplifting. His hostility persisted to such an extreme as he walked towards us that we had to leave the store, actually feeling threatened -- it seemed to go far beyond someone having a bad day. You might enjoy the clothing here, but I would highly recommend ignoring or avoiding the manager to the best of your ability. I think the ownership has changed recently, which would explain the positive reviews of the customer relations below. read more

One of my favorite boutiques in the city. Go with plenty of energy because this place is packed to the gills and you could easily spend multiple hours browsing. Even if I feel like I go through every rack, I inevitably end up seeing something else on my way out of the dressing room and making a u-turn. Yes, it can be very expensive. But there are plenty of moderately-priced pieces mixed in with the high-end items, and you pay for originality. I would say their stock here is largely neutrals and basics but in interesting, almost avant-garde shapes and fabrics. read more

I went to this store and was looking at the items. I moved hangars...don't do that in this store! Every hangar I moved, the clerk/owner (??) came up behind me, waiting till I moved and started fixing the hangar positions so they were all even. He did the same to another person in the store. I know it's not personal, but the issues should be curbed for business' sake. It took away from the experience and I decided not to buy anything no matter how much I liked it. I hate yelp, as a rule, and I find it to be a place for moral busybodies- however- I had such a nice experience at sugar cube today I decided to download the app just to write this review. I was greeted by the shopowner in a natural and pleasant way, asked him to check my bag, and was left to parooze. As for those complaining about a bag check- you're gonna have to get off your high horse and get over that. Theft is a real thing and small businesses can't afford the potential loss just because you take everything personally. A great store, great merchandise, and sure, not cheap like H&M -- because this is beautiful stuff. Someone got overheated about the bag check to which I say, "Welcome to the Big City..." I've always found Sugarcube staff to be cordial, and actually sort of funny people when you relate to them! Their clothes are somewhat unique, but remind me of much of what Urban Outfitters has to offer. I am giving it a two star rating primarily based on customer service. My boyfriend bought me a t-shirt from here because I raved about how much I loved it. It was $42, nothing to break the bank over. He wanted to surprise me and accidentally brought the wrong size home. I took the shift back to the store and they didn't have a smaller one. They told me I could only have a store credit. There was a stamp on the credit that stated it expired in 9 months. I kept going into the store, since it was across from the gym, and I couldn't find anything I wanted to spend my credit on. I approached the man working there (who I see there very often, maybe a manger/ owner?) and asked him if he would extend my credit for me. He said "No" and that it was an accounting issue that it would then be on the next year's books. However, my argument is that they already got my $42, so I gave you money. I will not go back here. It is a pet peeve of mine that businesses take your money, and demand that they will only give you a credit and then it expires. I was really hoping that I would really like this store, since I live in the area, but I will be shopping elsewhere. read more
