I really loved this place! They were supposed to close at 8, but when I called, they told me they would stay open until I arrived. They waited for me and let me finish shopping without ever rushing us out. The owners, a kind husband and wife, were so welcoming and helpful. They told us they used to have another shop but recently moved to this new location. The store has everything you could be looking for when it comes to Islamic items, along with beautiful and very modest clothing for women. My spouse introduced me to Sultanas over the years. I have been there to purchase books and other small things in the past. Yesterday we came here to purchase my first hijab mashallah. The sister, who I assume owns it, was incredibly warm and friendly and helped show me the different types of hijabs. My spouse bought his first thobe and there was many sizes and colors for him to choose from. The entire back area of the store was for women's clothes and hijabs. Everything is beautiful quality and very reasonably priced. Their book selection is very big and full of Islamic teachings. Sultana is truly special. I stopped in during Ramadan, and they graciously gave me a bag of dates, which made me feel so welcome--it was such a warm, personal touch. Their selection of books and headscarves is fantastic; I ended up picking out five books on the history of Islam and felt like I barely scratched the surface of what they offer. The space itself has such a calm, inviting atmosphere that makes you want to stay and browse. I'm so glad to have found this gem and will definitely be back! read more

My brother and I were driving by Sultana Bookstore last weekend when he had me stop to take a look inside. My brother lives less than half a mile away and insisted we stop because the owners were SO kind and had a wide range of books and modest clothing. We pulled up around closing time and didn't want to spend too much time, but ended up staying around 40 mins chatting with owner, Brother Shoukat. What a kind and wonderful human being he is, mA. We bought a lovely tunic for my brother, and an oud burner along with some of the best Bukhoor I've ever smelled. I raved about this store and Br. Shoukat's kindness all week and my mom insisted she join us the next time we go. Next time was yesterday as we were too excited to visit again Br. Shoukat was just as warm and friendly with our mom and we shopped and chatted for 1.5 hours! He even made me a cup of joshanda herbal tea as he noticed that I was sniffling from allergies I'm so happy to have found this gem of a store and family. We plan to come back again soon and have been telling our family and friends to come and support this small business. The prices are extremely reasonable and he let us know most of their prices for goods have remained the same the last 10 years! Lovely bookshop on a main ' thoroughfare ' in Berkeley. San Pablo Avenue near Page. Clean , well lit, well stocked and always ' Aromatic ' - as they also sell Natural Perfumes for men and women - reasonably priced !!! They also have children's books - maybe toys as well. I was in search of a store which sold scarves or anything I could use as a head covering and I had no luck until I found Sultana thanks to a friend. It's easy to find and parking doesn't seem like an issue. Parking is on the street. When I went in I was greeted by a beautiful Muslim woman who, I believe, runs the place. She's very welcoming and quick to assist. Their selection of head covers was amazing!! Honestly, I did a happy dance when she showed me her selection and left me to it. They have a variety of colors, materials, lengths, and styles. They have modest clothing, mainly for Muslim women, but nonetheless beautiful! They are a Muslim store and have a ton of books for anyone! I'm a Christian myself and only went for the head covers but if any Muslims out there are looking for a bookstore then supporting Sultana in Berkeley would be nice! I pay with a debit card and she takes cash too. The store has a distinct smell which is spicy and anyone who is sensitive to smells may have an issue. I didn't mind it but I know others who cry rivers instead of just leaving. Anyways, I took a business card of theirs and now my whole wallet smells like the store however, I got used to it now so that's nice. Again, if you don't do well with scents then DO NO COME AND DISTURB THE PEACE. My overall thoughts on this store are God bless this business and I will be back for more!! Loved this place! I'm in a season of life where I'm exploring different faiths and the owner and his wife were truly the sweetest people I've ever met. Like others have said this place is full of a ton of books and clothing! I purchased a Qu'ran there and the lady gave me a few additional books for free to help me learn more about the faith. Sultana Bookstore has it all! My friend and I were looking for a male 'joobah' (male prayer outfit) and no Muslim stores in the Berkeley area carried it. Thanks to Indus (Halal meat butcher) in Berkeley, I was recommeded to go to Sultana's which was about one mile away. I was amazed just walking into the store. They have a wide selection of books (which I wish was a little more organized because once it's been moved, it's lost until the owner finds it), perfumes, prayer rugs, herbal medicines, male/female apparel, DVDs/CDs/audiobooks, and more. If you're seeking for a good Islamic book or buying an appropriate gift for a Muslim family, I suggest shopping at this place before anywhere else. The owner is very friendly, knowledgeable and runs an honest business. I encourage family and friends to shop at this store. It's a true motivational store! I don't usually give businesses 5 stars but this business would get more than 5 if that were an option. The family who owns the bookstore is so nice. One time, I left my car in a nearby parking lot and the lot ended up being closed and locked, with my car inside! The owner insisted that my son and I come into the store even though they were closed by this time. He didn't want a single mother and child out on the street. He then offered to drive my son and I home. In the end, I asked him to take us to BART and my mom picked us up at our stop. The people who own this business are warm and welcoming to everyone, Muslim or not. I was not even a Muslim at the time that he offered to drive me from Berkeley to Pleasant Hill that night. The store looks small, but extends fairly far back. And they have a HUGE selection of scarves and modest clothing. Anyone who likes scarves would love this store, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. It's hard to find a store with such a big selection of scarves. HIGHLY recommended. read more

I discovered this place through a friend when I was single. I was shocked by the look of the store inside because they have mostly everything - books, hijabs, kamiz, abayas, nikabs, perfumes, decors, etc...I thought it was a small store but it is really a big one! The owners are really nice and friendly. This was where I bought my wedding dress ---the sister helped me for many hours! Yeah, I mean hours! I needed to find some specific Muslim garments for a stage play, and had no idea where to find them. I didn't realize for a long time that a store with "Bookstore" in its title would actually have a huge room in back filled with scarves in neat piles, long coats (I think those are called jilbabs), abayas, prayer caps, etc. I was embarrassed about having to say I was looking for something for a play, but the women at the shop were very nice, and even demonstrated how to tie a headscarf. The scarves were good prices, too. I think our actress' outfit turned out a lot more authentic because of the help I got at this store. read more

I wanted to buy a man's thobe for a while and I did not know where to go for that and I don't trust online shopping simply because I need to try the thobe before buying it. I walked into this store which is literally 2 blocks from my house, and I was amazed at the varieties of thobes that they have and at the friendliness of the owner " Shawkat"and his sister and his wife. I did buy one white thobe but after I came home, I found it to be short, so I went back and exchanged it. They were more than helpful and accommodating. I will go back to buy another one today. The prices are reasonable as well. In addition, they have a wide variety of black seed therapeutic options which I did not know about before. Shawkat lended me a book to read about the subject. This place is great! It is a Muslim-owned bookstore, but as a non-muslim, I find their prices and selection to be unmatched! One of my favorite gift ideas is to give people scarves and this is the place to go! They have the BIGGEST selection of scarves I have ever seen. They also have these great fragrance oils that their two little boys will come and roll on your skin. The oils are alcohol-free (great for my sensitive skin) and last all day. They also carry Black seed products which, as a cancer survivor, were recommended to me by the man who runs Sultana. I have only tried the oil and honeys so far, but hopefully will be able to try some of the other products once okay-ed by my doctor. They are very knowledgeable about what they carry and are always willing to go out of their way to help their customers. This is one of my favorite stores to go to not just because of what they carry, but also because I have befriended the owners and they are some of the most sincere and gracious people I have met! read more
