i had 2 barns built. it took a few months for them to deliver the materials and then the construction crew showed up. it was mostly Amish guys and a few english to operate the equipment. they arrived at about 8am, by 6 pm both barns were completed. the barns have withstood strong winds and storms. months later i had an extension added to the big barn. now to build a bardo. read more

I am extremely disappointed in my dealings with this builder; I would recommend avoiding them at all costs. We were told by sales representatives that the build would be completed in 4-5 months. We are currently nearing 13 months and the build is not yet completed. We have had three different project managers--the previous two quit working for Summertown. Communication with us by all staff involved has been dismal until the most recent project manager has taken over. Summertown has cost us thousands of dollars in rent that was not anticipated as we were given a build time estimate that did not reflect reality. This of course was done to close the deal and make a sale instead of being truthful. It took four months from the time the contract was signed for a pad to even be poured. This only occurred after significant prodding on my part. There is trash littered across my property from the various subcontractors that have been hired out. The phrase "turn-key" on their website is meaningless. I have been to the site to coordinate things with various subcontractors and project managers so many times I have lost count. read more

Summertown Barndo build. All installed wrong color roof. Wrong color wainscoting. Wrong color floor. Bug infestation a week after moving in....called customer service redirected my call to warranty dept. Warranty dept said we have a lot of bugs in Tennessee....well hey, there is great quote. I have lived in TN more than 20 yrs. , owned 4 different houses....the Summertown Barndo build is the very first house I have owned which had bug infestation issues. Stink bugs in almost every light dome (about 30 of them in my house), each had to be removed by hand on a 12 ft ladder and cleaned. I work as a nurse (since 2004) and have heard and read about several patients falling from ladders. Before my Barndo build started I was contacted and assigned to 4 different building supervisors -- I did hear the one who oversaw my build is no longer there. The contract at Summertown is basically after move in they are hardly responsible for anything in the first yr. warranty. They offer "arbitration" in said contract I signed....I have asked about arbitration to receive a "we don't need arbitration" or no reply at all. My wrong floor color and wainscoting was corrected by Summertown. These guys are lock step in the wrong direction of what's good and has integrity. I was asked twice for more money after I had already signed my mortgage contract -- as if they were pan handling of things not mentioned until after I was close to moving date. It used to be here in TN and man's word was his bond. My building supervisor at the time told me everything could be corrected after I move in. The warranty dept. said no even to a light fixture installed by their hires (has no purpose), I kindly asked STM to remove it after I moved in, they said it's not our responsibility. read more

My husband and I drove to summertown metals to get informed on our options on a barndominium which took us over 1.5 hour to get there. We told the sales person what we were looking to do. The comment from the sales person stated, "We have all you need to look at online." Not sure why we wasted our time driving there. Not impressed will not use. read more

1600 sq ft house, 14 mos. later completed (4 different building supervisors, conveyed diff. Information regarding access to my build), there were two sales reps on my build -- no longer at Summertown. I cant speak about STM (metal) factory or barn builds, but the men overseeing my barndo build were telling me to eat s#$@ in their own kind of polite lying ways. Tried to walk me out twice for something I thought I paid for when I signed for my mortgage - I eventually caved on the gutter cost. I had a move date scheduled, could not get a confirmation of final inspection...so i had to change move date, causing another two wk delay. I have checked other state builders and they basically say their builds are done in 3 to 6 mos. move in ready. I once had a 3200 sq ft home built in Spring Hill TN 2010 -- done in four mos. My house build reminds me of a relationship that brought out most of my negative feelings. The people working on the actual building were always professional and polite. Could be STM overcommits w not enough contractors (because they cant find them)_causing stress on everyone. Anyway, I had big hopes of my house build completed by 12/2025. Today is 3/18/26 and my house is still not move in ready. It is a beautiful barndo and I love it. Again the stress created by STM processes -- I plan to never repeat. read more

The original crew left our shop with a few issues, Derek the owner reached out and took full accountability and has gone above and beyond to make it right. As a business that is all you can do because unfortunately you cannot control every crew / install team out there. Very pleased with the quickness of his response (drove 4 hrs the next day to look at it himself). today new materials are being delivered and the warranty team is scheduled this week to redo a couple items. We have had houses built before. This is by far the worst build we've experienced. DO NOT TRUST SUMMERTOWN METALS. Their crews shouldn't even be allowed to own a hammer, they definitely don't own squares. There were enough nails left over that I should by a nail gun and enough large scrap wood pieces left over that I built shelves in my barn. You don't get what you paid for, you get what they give you. We paid to have cypress porches on pylons, we got treated lumber sunk in concrete and 3 species of wood. Their crew refused to stop even when I told them it was not what we paid for - they just kept building because they were told to get it done. Not to mention absolutely no one spoke English. The cypress beams were different sizes which made the house look like it has crooked teeth. A different crew did finally replace them with matching sizes but they cut the porch roof bolts which we had to replace to re-attach the porch roof to the porch. We paid for mahogany doors and got oak doors (costs them less). They "forgot' to frame the closets. Door frames are not square. The sliding glass door is a one-off that didn't come with hardware to latch it closed (still trying to find hardware that will work, currently using a wood dowel to keep the door closed). Spent 4 months trying to get their build to pass code. We had to get a different contractor to fix and continue the build. We're 13 months into a simple build - 1500 sq ft house. DO NOT PULL THE PERMITS YOURSELF - PERMIT HOLDER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PASSING CODES - however, Summertown doesn't care - if it has to be fixed to pass code you have to pay for the fix. It was a good thing that we were around because we would have never caught the shortcuts and shoddy work if we weren't and probably would never pass code. read more

Summertown built a building I cannot use because the concrete floor is 4 inches above grade. The sliding barn doors go down to grade level, so there is a 4-inch step into the garage. Now I can't get my equipment in there. I called to ask for help and they told me to just add a ramp with a gap for the doors. This is a stupid solution. I just looked on their website and saw many pictures of similar buildings with barn doors. None of them have this issue. So, I have to assume they are just lying to me because they don't want to fix it. read more

Overall it was pretty good. The crew did a quality job on the building with one exception and the foreman or owner of the crew company said he would come back and fix the issue and never did. The only other issue I had was the concrete people poured some of the extra concrete in my yard as opposed to disposing of it in some other way. Even so, I would do business again, however I would let them know that was not to happen again and if someone tells me they will be back to fix and issue the company is to follow up with that crew to make sure they do. I would have given the best rating minus these issues. I will be very clear where things will be the next time we discuss a building, which will be soon, but I will definitely shop a bit as I didn't shop at all because I knew the company when it was just a startup and lived in the area at that time. One other little issue was I called about adding a lean to and it took several days maybe a couple of weeks to get a call back. My time is valuable and that wasn't reflected, but again, overall I will give them a second shot at my business, but they will have to earn a bit better next time. read more

From the first contact until completion the communication has been great, I have spoke with 7-8 different employees in different departments and everyone of them were very polite and knowledgeable. Everytime I called they answered immediately. Derek has followed thru with his word from start to finish. The company seems to be well organized with all of the different departments working together seamlessly. Materials were all amazing quality and the subcontractors did an amazing job and were very knowledgeable and quick. The framing crew reached out to us and offered to make any last minute changes and told us to let them know if we had any questions or concerns about anything. The metal crew was also very communicative and knowledgeable. Overall, I would recommend Summertown Metals to anyone looking to build a house/barndominium. I absolutely love my new Garage. The process was somewhat simple. Very cost effective option in my opinion. My 30x40x10 garage was just under $30,000 including concrete. The garage can be completely custom to a point. I only have a couple minor complaints. For a first time buyer, i feel that the communication was lacking from the sales team. Once the sale is completed, there is some information that I would liked to have known. But that wasn't a very big issue to me. I just look at as I learned something new. I did have a major lack of communication with the concrete team as far as scheduling and return visits to finish up. I wasnt given a firm date for a couple weeks, and when they did show up, none of the gentleman spoke english. The team lead, or the supervisor/foreman never showed up. It made it difficult to communicate. He also stated he had no cell service at times and also admitted that he forgot to tell me when I was scheduled. I also wasnt told that they had to come back and cut grooves into the concrete, and i had already started moving into the garage at that point. So needless to say, many of my items are covered in dust. The concrete team also left numerous water/drink bottles and other trash behind. So in short, the concrete crew was very unprofessional, and i wouldnt use them again. But, The actual garage builders (Kevin Wicker) were amazing. They built my garage as they were building there own. They cleaned up after themselves and were very personable and friendly. I would definitely use them for future projects Overall, I had a good experience but the concrete crew and communication issues drop this score to a 4. I have and will continue to refer Summertown to family and friends. read more

Our new garage/shop looks great...from afar. But look closer and you won't find any 90 degree angles, level studs or solid craftsmanship, whatsoever. For starters, the subs they sent out to build it were not up to code. Incredibly unprofessional. The individual who led its construction worked in his bare feet. He conducted business in our driveway that was unrelated to the project. I think he was selling his car. His partner, a nice older gentleman, urinated in our driveway multiple times. No discretion was taken. Again, a nice guy, but unprofessional. We asked for the building to be built parallel with the line of our home. I should have caught it sooner, but no effort was made to ensure it was parallel. It's clearly not parallel. I'll get over this as you have to be looking for it to see it. Hurricane ties for the rafters were missing, damaged insulation was used, the door wasn't put together correctly and the roof was installed crooked. Good news: much of this was noticed and graciously repaired by Summertown management. Roof was replaced, ties installed, etc. However, after a month or so of utilization, I just can't get past the lack of attention that was made during construction. When I'm hanging shelving, I'm reminded how unlevel everything is. Not sure if we'll ever use Summertown again. If we do, I'll pay better attention. I may be overreacting, but I don't feel 100% safe inside the building after seeing the manner it was constructed. I'm hoping I'll eventually get over it as I'm sure it's fine. Summertown is a big name around here and unfortunately, I think they're resting on their laurels and getting lazy. I do appreciate how it looks, from afar. read more

This place has the absolute worst customer service I have ever seen. Not to mention they will over charge, lie to you and will not stand behind anything they say or do!! We purchased a package back in December of 2019. It was a horrible experiance from the get go. One thing after another until we finally told the builder not to bother showing up. They contracted the slab out to an incompitent group of guys that did a super bad job, tore up our driveway and left us with a slab that had dips in it and already has cracked in 2 seperate spots. The guys that delivered our doors & windows got stuck in our yard and totally rutted it up, and when they unloaded our stuff they put cross outs on bottom to keep off of ground but they stopped in the middle of windows and the bottom 2 were shattered, not to mention they put the doors on the top so most everything was warpped. We had to replace 2 windows ourselves. We cant even get them to reply to a message or email. So in the long run we had to build the house ourselves. Oh and the worst part is they sold us about $5000 worth of lumber and tin that was not needed at all. They would not take it back or do a thing. We could not so much as get an apology for all the troubles. It still sounds unbelievable. read more

They asked me to pay for their mistake, you ordered A they sent to you B, you have to pay for A again otherwise they will let you call them back once you make your final decision as you did not checked your order in time. read more

They will leave the job site a total mess and do not pick up anything. Also, the contractor doing the concrete is horrible. See attached. I could not with a good conscience recommend anyone purchasing a building from this company. I would recommend that should you choose to get a quote or purchase a building you ask about and get in writting the following: 1. Is Summertown Metals licensed to quote and sell buildings over $25,000 in TN? Are the builders legal, licensed and fully insured? 2. Do they store their metal coils in a climate controlled environment and if not will the manufacturer still stand behind the paint warranty they offer? 3. When they say that "we" will build the exteriors of a building ask them if "they" will warranty that the work is done properly and if you are paying THEM for the labor and if no why not if "they" quoted and are building it. 4. If they tell you you can give them a copy of your tax exempt card and not have to pay taxes ask them if it is LEGAL for YOU to do that??? 5. Get a completion date in writing. I would suggest purchasing your building from another company even if it cost a little more. Sometimes you get what you pay for. read more

This is a good place to buy a building if you are 1. Not in a hurry and don't mind waiting at least a few months; 2. Take whatever builder they send you, who is a contractor and they actually have no control over - ours was slow, put in 5 hour days max, only had one man helping him, and it took nearly 2 months for him to complete a 40x60 shop building that should've taken less than 3 weeks; 3. If there are any damaged pieces that need to be replaced it may take a month for them to come out (it was 5 weeks for our one post wrap to be replaced); 4. if you don't mind the leftover material sitting in your yard for a few months while they decide when to come get it. The building is nice, but I had to micro-manage the entire process. The best part about this company is the Building Coordination people - they were quick to respond to my questions and concerns, and although they couldn't do anything about the slow builder, they did what they could when issues arose with material problems. Customer Service needs to take some notes from Building Coordination. read more
