I went for my yearly check up. The doctor told me that I might have thyroids problem and my EKG came back abnormal so I needed to do a thyroid ultrasound and an echocardiogram. I scheduled both. paid hundreds of dollars for the thyroid exam (which came back negative) and over a thousand for the echocardiogram (which also apparently came back negative). After my echocardiogram, I heard nothing. after weeks of worrying that something might be wrong with my heart, I called. They wouldn't tell me anything except that my doctor no longer works for them and to discuss my result I would need to schedule another $400 session with the new doctor. I scheduled It and he told me that the original EKG malfunctioned and basically whatever the old doctor told me was wrong. but I still paid over a thousand dollars plus $400 for you to tell me this.. I feel like I'm entitled to a lawsuit. read more

I made an appointment with the dermatologist specifically for skin cancer screening, which is covered by my insurance in full as preventative. Nothing else has been discussed or performed. They billed me for a specialist visit instead! After I called about it, coding review department "determined" that it was billed correctly and "left me a voice message", which I never received. I requested a supervisor call back FIVE TIMES, but never got one. I've filed an appeal with my insurance and will further look into reporting this practice as insurance fraud. read more

I will start by saying that I have had no problems with the medical care at this group. My issue is with the billing office. I have been absolutely floored by the complete lack of competence of the billing office. A year and a half after I moved out of New Jersey and had switched to a different healthcare provider, I received a bill from a service 21 months prior for about $1,800. I will acknowledge that the legal statute of limitations for collecting medical debt in NJ is 6 years - that does not make it reasonable in my opinion and this is not a one off circumstance for Summit Health. That being said, with it being so long after the date of service, I had to figure out how to get into my old insurance portal and get in contact with my former insurance company. When I did, they advised that they adjusted the bill to about $535 (as per the contracted legally allowed amount for the services that I received) and that it was paid in full. I got an EOB. The amount that Summit Health billed me for was the difference between what the insurance company adjusted and paid and what they had originally charged (again, outside of the contracted allowed amount). I took this back to Summit Health. The first person I spoke with on the phone said that insurance denied the claim because it wasn't a covered service. I pointed out that I literally had an EOB that adjusted the bill and paid for it, so obviously that wasn't correct. She gave me the run around and when I didn't accept it, she said she would escalate it and someone would call me back within 2 business days. Nobody called me back. I called back again and spoke with someone else. She couldn't figure out why I was being charged, so she said she would escalate it and have somebody call me back. Nobody called me back. I called back and spoke with a third person who said he couldn't do anything and somebody would call me back. Mind you, these were not quick conversations each time. I spent multiple hours during my work day on the phone going back and forth with the insurance company (I was somehow forced to be the liaison between the two entities despite knowing the least about the contract and not having access to the system and whatever the fuck they were missing to remove the bill????). After about couple of weeks of continuously chasing Summit Health, I finally got someone who was able to remove the charge. This was the same billing office line that I had been repeatedly calling, so I imagine that all of the reps that I spoke with previously had power to do something and just didn't. She said she would do whatever needed to be done to remove the bill, and that she would call me back before noon 2 days later to confirm that it had been done. She never called me back. When I called in that afternoon, I spoke with someone who confirmed that the bill removed, but he said you now have another bill of about $61 or something. Are you fucking kidding me? He said that a separate service had been denied by the insurance company. So I went back to my insurance company and they said yes it was denied but we believe it was incorrectly coded by Summit Health's billing office. Back I go. I start another process of going back and forth between Summit Health and my insurance company. I inform Summit Health that I'm working on this with insurance - do not send my bill to collections. A few weeks later, I find out that they fucking sent my bill to collections!!!! When I gave somebody a mouthful on this, she said it's automatically sent to collections after a certain amount of time. Why the fuck was I not informed of that? Also, there has to be a way to prevent that when you KNOW somebody is working with their insurance company on the claim issue. Ultimately, I won, and paid nothing. I have never been so irate in my life. Summit Health's billing office is completely unprofessional and unwilling to help. I fought tooth and nail to not be charged by covered and ALREADY PAID FOR SERVICES removed from my bill. This is not the first time I am aware of them billing people a very long time after the date of service. My mom has had several experiences with that as well (those bills, to my knowledge, were correct). I recommend avoiding this practice to protect yourself from circumstances like this. read more

Be very careful! I am a retired Internist. Was seen as a new patient, by an internist for 20 minutes, had a cursory exam, then was billed twice! Medicare paid for the new patient visit, then Summit billed for a wellness visit ($236) the same day, which Medicare would not pay for. Spoke to billing that said since I had chronic illnesses, they could bill for both. FRAUD! Unfortunately, Medicare would not go after these thieves, because Medicare was not billed for the wellness visit (which never occurred). read more

The technician and the equipment were fine, but to get a final report continues to be a bureaucratic nightmare. I have been calling several departments, but no one can help me. Summit Health touts their patient portal as a very convenient way to make appointments. Don't bother. The patient portal sucks. I just tried to make an appointment. I entered the specialty, as required. When I tried to enter my doctor's name (as required) the website would not display a drop-down menu with the doctors' names. And, you cannot type in your doctor's name. As a result, the website would not allow an appointment to be made. The alternative, calling to make an appointment is also frustrating. You are lucky if you don't have to waste at least 5 to 10 minutes before someone answers the phone and then connects you to someone who can actually make an appointment. Maybe Summit Health just doesn't have the technology to properly operate a patient portal. Maybe they just don't care. I don't know. One more thing, the patient portal does not allow any messages to be sent to a "customer service" department. read more

This company is not in the health business but rather in the business of making money by scamming their patients and mistreating their doctors. They restrict your time with your doctor, requiring the assistant to constantly knock on the door to remind her that she is spending too much time with you. Many of the best doctors I know have left because they aren't allowed to be the good doctors that they want to be. They also send you bills for additional payments after you have already paid their bill - probably because they couldn't gauge the insurance company to pay the amount they want. Mixing up bills with other patients; adding on to bills by adding procedures/services that were never performed; mis coding procedures and then insurance won't cover a standard procedure; not have the orders in for bloodwork when appointment is due; not really listening to the problems, because they can only handle ONE issue at a time - 'cause the body is not connected? (who hired these doctors?!?!). My favorite is: finding a specialist, because referral, having an appointment, being a bit ridiculed by the specialist, but then the specialist quits and you can't make a follow up appointment. Billing practices are questionable as I get e-mails asking for addtional money with no explanation. (No paper bills). I refuse to open the attached as I feel its a scam. Past history with Summit Health I have had issues with billing. I am always correct as they bill the wrong insurance or claim they never recieved payment. In the event of most minor alignments or injuries or even in the situations where you don't really feel like heading over to the larger Hospitals where you're only gonna have to wait seemingly forever, then you might as well head to this Urgent Care Center. They'll stitch you up and have you back in action in no time flat. Well, ok it was more like an hour and a half, but you get what I'm saying. It's Quick in comparison to the big scale Hospitals. She has been able to properly diagnose and treat my lymphodema without asking me where I went to medical school or insulting me. No such luck, disconnected Call back, on hold for 50 minutes, finally get someone, tell them I left a voice Mail. Honest to god, this is her answer 'oh, I didn't know we have voice Mail'.
