Having never been to any other hairdresser than the family-run salon I'd been going to for years, I…read morerecently visited Lazarou Brothers, Caerphilly Road for the first time. Typically, I'm not a 'girly girl' and have never bothered having more than a quick trim, maybe twice a year, and i had felt a little apprehensive stepping into this fancy-looking salon. I wasn't sure what to expect, and was a little nervous (though excited) at the prospect of paying for something more than your average cut-and-blowdry. As soon as I walked in though, Flora, Chantelle and all of the team made me feel at ease. They were chatty, friendly and professional, and Flora (who I believe co-manages the salon with her brother) is obviously very proud, and rightly so, of the excellent reputation which Lazarou has earned. My hair was dark red-brown and had quite a lot of colour build-up from using box-dyes over the years. My hair is also long and very thick. I wanted a full head of Balayage highlights and was well-prepared with pictures of how I wanted my hair to look. I was well-advised by my stylist, Flora, that the colour contrast of the highlights would be unlikely to be as bright as the pictures I'd shown her. Flora was very careful not to give me unrealistic expectations, but all the same I decided to give it a try. I spent 3 hours in the salon in total and had a menu of complimentary drinks to choose from, including wine and hot drinks. I chose a Gingerbread Latte, and each time I'd emptied the cup (and finished off the little biscuit with it!) I was offered another. I also had a complimentary hand and arm massage whilst I was waiting for the highlights to take effect. Flora gave me gorgeous Balayage highlights in 3 different tones as well as some foils throughout. The results were stunning; somewhat subtle (as expected), but really natural and healthy-looking. I was really pleased with the look! I've had lots of compliments on it and I've since become a little bit vain, playing with my hair and enjoying the myriad of glossy, pretty tones :) Overall, I think Lazarou Brothers is more than just a hair transformation; it's an experience. And it's certainly one I'll be enjoying again very soon - now, I really must book that appointment....

Woah! How can a pedicure cost £45? I didn't actually have a pedicure here, but I was just looking…read moreat the website to see the prices of other treatments when that caught my eye. Sorry, back to the actual review. Again, just like Body Basix, the look of the place is completely standard, though that's not a negative. It's not as though I'd rather go somewhere that looked vile. In fact, if anything, this is even nicer. I'm going to be honest with you, I'm not going to go into the details of my treatment. Suffice to say, for a standard bikini wax, it is only £15. The staff are extremely professional and put you at ease!

I used to come here for treatments until I created a budget and decided that £50 was a bit too much to spend each month on maintenance. Ah well. But it is worth it, if it's not a stretch for you. Like Laura, I'll spare you the details of my sessions, but Perfections beauty therapist Donna, who I'm not sure still works there or not, had what I like to call "magic hands". I've had a few bikini waxes in my day, and without a doubt, she was by far the most gentle and efficient I've come across. I'm sure some of you guys are out there rolling your eyes, but anyone who's been there on that massage table knows it takes special skill to reduce what is normally white-knuckle pain to a: "Oh. That ain't so bad." Whenever my girls would ask me for a referral, Perfections is the place I'd send them. The treatments are a bit pricey, but I have no problem shelling the cash if I come away from the session both happy and hairless.

Gaia Lifestyle has two clinics in Cardiff, one in Pontcanna and another in Roath. They are…read more'dedicated to creating awareness of the benefits of Complementary Therapies, Ayurveda, Yoga and more'. Positioned around the corner from The Feet and Face Place, which provides a plethora of treatments that deal with looking good on a pretty superficial basis, I have to admit preferring the Gaia approach to health and beauty. It's not as flash as The Feet and Face Place, but it offers curative treatments as well as the purely cosmetic. It also provides Ayurvedic nutrition and lifestyle consultations, which deal with health and beauty on an essential level. (One thing in their favour is that the The Feet and Face Place offer Reflexology, which certainly does work on a more profound level than their other treatments). The Gaia Lifestyle Centre in Pontcanna operates an appointment only system, (as does their other clinic). They do not provide a reception as such, and so bookings are made with the individual practioners. A full list is available on their well maintained website. www.gaialifestyle.com/

Ayurvedic massages are meant to be incorporated into part of an overall treatment programme, often also incorporating yoga and nutritional advice. The practitioner at Gaia starts off by having a consultation with you about your lifestyle and then goes on to suggest massage treatments, and offers advice about yoga practice and nutrition. What I am most keen to tell everyone about, however, is the divine Ayurvedic Shirodhara treatment available here. This is also known as the 'third eye drip', which sounds far less appealing than it actually is! Basically, you start off enjoying a face, neck and scalp massage, and then the practitioner sets off a flow of warm oil onto your third eye on your forehead, creating the most unbelievable feeling of relaxation and peacefulness. I would actually go as far as to say this treatment totally transports you elsewhere, inducing a kind of dream like state without actually sending you to sleep. I can't recommend it highly enough, based on my own experiences!
