However, compared to other Asian grocery stores in the area, improvements could definitely be made! For one, a lot of the meats did not look fresh! And while I understand that with selling fresh seafood, you get the fishy smell but it was really pungent. Additionally, the prices were comparable to other spots in the area, I would make sure to double check expiration dates! read more

This store does not value human health or the lives of their customers. I bought 2 packed red snapper fish on 6/15. Upon opening the packed fish, the smell was like a dead dog. This is not the first time they packed rotten fish and sell to customers, I usually throw away rotten fish bought at this store, however this one was so bad that i had to take it back. This Latino staff that I talked to was an ashole and totally dismissed my complaints, so I dropped the fish ($20) and left. read more

Excellent grocery market. The produce is fresh. Excellent meat selection - bought some brisket and oxtail. Excellent selection of condiments including Pixian Doubanjan bean paste among others plus the popular Lan Goa Ma chili crisp. I bought enough supplies to make my own chili crunch too. Aisles dedicated to Mexico, "Africa", Korea, etc. One complete, full aisle dedicated to pickled products including three choices for bags of pickled mustard greens. Lots of dried chillies and chili flakes. Back of store has every Chinese/Asia cook pot or utensil or chopstick one might need. Prices are darn good and selection is excellent. Service was good; I asked store sales associate to help me find beef shank and he was quite helpful. My only complaint is that the "refrigerator fresh noodle section" had a limited selection; maybe I caught them before restocking day - but a full aisle of dried noodles though. I saw that this place offered Pad Thai and that is one of my favorite dishes. I stopped by and ordered a small. The price was great $5.99 for a couple pounds of food. However, this was really bad. The noodles were hard, the chicken was rubbery, and there was absolutely no taste. I am only giving it two stars as the store was super clean and the employees were very nice. Maybe it was an off day for the food but it was just bad. I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

Sun Foods is one of the places I like to shop at in the area for those huge stainless steel pots and pans. They carry the 60CM pots for about $150 each and the smaller size, forgot the size, for $100 each. I don't know if those are decent pricing but our local Asian stores sells them about $200 to $250 each. It's a good deal in my book. The establishment also houses a deli inside plus a gold jewelry store. I haven't tried the food made in the deli but the food looked decent. I believe one time I picked up a premade banh mi sandwich; I believe it was made elsewhere and sold there. It was ok. Lacked flavor but decent for a grocery store. I purchased a jar of kimchi from here and it seems bad. It was no where near the expiration date but it tasted off. During the summers, they also host a farmers market in the parking lot. This also means that there are a lot of sketchy people around the area. As it's right on University Ave, so the establishment is hard to miss. We've been stopped a few times by people who were begging for money, not food. This, plus the crowd, and strong fish stench are some of the negatives about this establishment. The employees are expressionless. I don't think I've ever asked for assistance. One time I asked the cashier if I should leave my items in the cart or take them out. In a very monotone voice, she whispered, "Take them out," through her mask. If I were here to strictly shop for groceries, I'd rather go to Dragon Star or Shuang Hur for the best deals. read more

I bought three durians few days ago for the first time from this store. I opened them up to freeze the fruit for winter. None of their durian have the typical soft creamy texture. All were rigid and appeared to be not ripe at all. They did not taste good either. There was only one label saying "mountain tiger", but it is not the true "cat mountain king" label. It is the first time I have ever had such poor quality. If I lived closer, if not having to spend $20 for gas alone to drive to the store, I would have returned them. I have bought smoked ham hocks the other day from Sun foods in the unidale mall. And as I was cooking my ham hocks it started smelling very funny and so I turned them off and I let them cool and I opened them up and they were spoiled absolutely spoiled and so I called the store and they told me that they're not spoiled and I said yes they are and they said to bring them in I said well I already cooked them and they were they were so terrible I threw them away ASAP this is something you don't want to make up at all. And when I did get the hammocks they did not give me a receipt in my bag and I couldn't ate those ham hocks and it would have been a very terrible thing I probably would have got food poisoning in the ER. And I believe I should get a refund I spent over $10 on these hammocks and they won't even give my money back maybe I should have ate them and then maybe I could have just sued Sun foods read more

I want to start off that many Asian grocery stores in the Twin Cities are unfortunately not the best when it comes to service, employee benefits, a clean facility and great quality food- compared to your average grocery store like Cub Foods. However, we (Asians, POC, people who love ethnic foods) still go there because of the diversity in culturally relevant food options. Although I definitely agree with other Yelpers that the food products (especially the meat and produce) are sometimes over due and disappointing- I would say that I still LOVE the seafood options and believe that they have improved a lot (trust me, I remember when this place with called Foods Mart, had horrible service and overdue food including canned goods all the time and had a different owner). Also, sometimes you will find local businesses owners selling produce and goods in the Sun Foods parking lot (I think there is a yearly fee that vendors pay for a table). read more

This place used to be great, but in recent times it's really gone to the dogs. It seems like it's no longer managed by a Hmong family, but by South Asians from India or Pakistan. Problem is, I can't find the brands & items that I've always bought there for so many years. It's like they don't know what to buy in terms of SE Asian grocery goods. It also seems that they're trying to cater to too many different ethnicities and letting the SE Asian slide.. they don't even carry Calbee Shrimp Chips anymore, just some off-brand. Deli has gone downhill. Their kapoon was fantastic years ago. Now, it is sold in a bowl that can not be seen through, so there is no way of knowing that it is almost entirely noodles in the bowl. The broth does not taste of coconut or herbs, and has only a tablespoon of bamboo shoot. The toppings consist of about three tablespoons of cabbage and half a teaspoon of cilantro. It is just noodles, with a bit of ground chicken. The eggrolls are mostly empty inside, but there is no way of knowing this until you buy them. I will find myself an honest grocery store and deli, and stop shopping here. I wanted to buy frozen dumplings, but the freezers were not cold enough to keep them frozen, so all the dumplings were thawed and soft. It is too bad. I was a loyal customer for years. read more

As a former NYC resident and a recent Twin City resident, I felt that this store, which I have seen multiple times while traveling on the Light Rail was in a word, unimpressed, as far as, appearance, employee interaction (unhappy cashiers), and overall experience. One aspect of business that a few business do not understand is basic fundamental knowledge of business; your customers are what make you so how are you going to maintain and attract new customers. This has the potential to do so much better but falls short....way short. The best part of the visit here was the fascinating cookware (HUGE pieces that stack). My repeat patronage is not based on price alone or convenience but experience. Should I grace their doorstep ever again for a purchase, it would have to be for one of the coolest cookware pieces. I visited Sun Foods in December 2022 to purchase frozen Dim Sum for a holiday brunch. I made a similar purchase one year ago. Reaching home, I was disappointed at the quality of the frozen chicken, pork and vegetable dumplings. At some point in storage, the bags of dumplings were allowed to partially defrost. As a result, the bags contained large amounts of ice and the dumplings were frozen together in large clumps. Sadly, a customer cannot see this condition until the bags are opened. The only product I can recommend are the small, individually-wrapped adzuki bean buns. I will shop elsewhere next year for my Dim Sum brunch. read more

First review of the year...sorry for the delay. This place is a little more organized than other Asian stores. It is big inside. They sell variety of fruits from SE Asia like persimmons, rambutan, durian, mangosteen, langsat and jack fruit. Their meat section is interesting from quail, duck, tripe, live frog meat and variety of seafood. I asked for bat meat and they said they stop selling them because it is not a demand. I thought that was interesting. I know their other location in Brooklyn Park sell camel meat. Anyways back to this location, it has a deli with small seating in a separate room. I haven't tried out the food yet but I know it is good. This place not only sell food but also accessories from jewelry bags, phone cards/covers, chargers, purses and other stuff. Their hot deli is truly scary. Everything looks like it's been sitting under the heat lamp for days. The fried rice was so dried out and crusted to the pan that I'm not sure how they would actually scoop it up to serve it. And don't expect to know what anything is - nothing is correctly labelled. I looked in their cooler case by the deli area and saw a few things that they had attempted to relabel with a new fresher date - but left the old label with the expired date still on under the new label. Ewwww. The first time I went was at 5pm on a weekday so I figured maybe they just cater more to the lunch crowd. I tried again a few days later around 12:30pm. Both times the deli looked just as bad. My first trip I didn't get anything but my second trip I got an egg roll and a samosa because they were the least sketchy looking things. The egg roll was oddly fishy even though I was told there was no fish in it. The samosa had no label as to what the filling was but to me it seemed like a chickpea curry. It was very tasty and not doughy at all so at least there's one edible thing there. So two stars for that and their decent prices on grocery items. When my Hmong coworkers heard I had gone for lunch, they were horrified and warned me not to go back because of the bad deli and rotten meat. They've never steered me wrong before so I think I'm going to listen to them. read more

On the weekends they even have a outdoor market that's full of friendly vendors and fresh vegetables. I usually shop here for my grains and specialty seasonings. It's not appropriate to judge Sun Foods by regular supermarket standards (i.e., Whole Foods). Don't go there looking for fresh ground beef - forget about anything organic. Do go there if you are looking for fish paste or camel meat. Hamline-Midway's poverty level is significantly higher than other communities in Minnesota, Sun Foods caters to that community. Understandably their hot food section is underwhelming but their price point is significantly less than most fast food chains. Late in the evening, they mark down their hot foods to get rid of. Tonight I stumbled across a few patrons waiting for the mark downs. I scored some fried chicken and strings beans all at $1.00 a container. I had a nice dinner for $2.00. Not fancy but perfectly fine. People need to adjust expectations to market. It's a nice find for the neighborhood. read more

They carry a wide range of foods (meats, seafood, produce, drinks, dry foods, spices etc.) from various cultures. Oh, and the price is good! I found red snapper fish, oxtail, turkey necks and kola champagne, which I've never found anywhere here. Also, there were plantains, mangos and coconut milk at lower prices than I've paid at other places that carried them. You may not get why I would want THESE items, but as a first generation American with parents from the West Indies, these were the foods I grew up with and had to do without since moving here. To get them, I would have to wait till I visited home (NYC) to stock up and eat till I could barely zip my pants. However, I no longer have to wait now that I discovered (just like Christopher Columbus) this place. My family shopped here for many years and the store itself is getting worse than it used to be. The fruits and vegetables are at ridiculous and unreasonable prices and they are not fresh. Most of them are moldy, or some are rotten. This also goes to the meat, and its horrifying. Even though they have opened up more space, they still change the items on the shelves. It is not what it used to be. The item that you want is located here, and then the next time you come back, the item is at a different area and you have to search all around the store just to find it. The Staff is not very good either when asking where the product is, and it frustrates me a lot. There are barely anyone at the customer service, and yes, some of the employees do stare at you and do nothing, and also the treatment of the employees is beyond horrible. Reminiscent of the giant Asian grocery stores in the Bay Area, with tons of weird vegetables and fruits at ridiculous prices (bought 6 persimmons for $1.53; at Cub you'd pay $1.99 for just one) tanks of fish and crustaceans, a meat counter, and aisles of groceries for many ethnic cuisines: East and Southeast Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Mexican/Central American, even a few middle-American items like Froot Loops. Small deli selection and a jewelry store. Great to come here on a weekend when the farmer's market is running out in the parking lot. Sun Foods is -the- place to go if you're looking for specialty Asian items. They have entire aisles dedicated to rice noodles, various teas, (unique) fresh produce and a ton of imported items. I don't typically frequent stores like this so I was even more impressed when I noticed how fucking cheap everything was. If you're in the market for half a pig's head, you can nab one here for like ten bucks. They don't send quite as strong a message as an entire horse head, but they ship for way less. I do have to say that some of the fish in particular looked pretty damn far from fresh (sunken, dull eyes, dried out fins, interesting... aroma), but that's almost to be expected with the volume of product they have on hand. If you're looking to make homemade kimchi or an entire tub full of ramen, you can't stop at a better place. read more

I recently discovered the beauty of Asian Marts and this one is great. They have a huge selection of everything including an exotic array of seafood, live and frozen. For how much seafood exists, it's surprising how little smell this place has. I've been to other markets and have had to leave because of the stench. I usually come here for cheap produce, herbs, and various Mexican and Asian sauces and spices. I can't help it I LOVE curry and enchiladas! It is just so cheap that I don't see the reason to go to a normal grocery store and pay $10-20 more. A lot of their sauces are actually from Mexico or Thailand or where ever so usually they don't have all the extra gunk that America has decided is so good for our health, such as HFCS. I hate that stuff and am really trying to get it out of my diet and buying foreign products has proven over and over that there isn't much additives, just the true ingredients. Tofu ($1.50 at most) and Sriracha ($2 for the smaller bottle) are always SUPER cheap here as well. And I know you all have a bottle of that delicious hot sauce, so why not buy it for less? This place is also my favorite because of the amazing spring rolls they have! They have a small deli where you can get a super cheap and large entree for a few bucks, while tempting, I usually just stick with the spring rolls. For $1.99 you get two huge and delicious rolls of goodness. Seriously, the wrapper breaks perfectly when bitten into and it is stuffed to the max with all the normal herbs and noodles. Unfortunately it comes with shrimp, pork, and maybe chicken maybe fake meat I can't really tell, but I just pull the stuff out I don't want and hand it to Nic. They are usually just wrapped up and ready to go sitting on a shelf with the choice of a peanut sauce or a sweet and sour I believe, I always get the peanut. Yum! Also it's just fun to look at all the weird things that exist in the world and even better if you decide to buy something and make something yummy with it! Go out and try the exotic life, I dare you! Went to pick up Bahn Mi sandwiches at iPho Saigon as I have done many times before. I get a sandwich maker who was out of cucumber slices and to lazy to get some more so I left with 4 incomplete sandwiches and vowed never to return. Sun Foods is the place to get your produce on the cheap... $1.50 for 2 avocados? Yes please! $1.99 for 5 apples? Absolutely! They have really good deals on cilantro, basil, and other fresh herbs, too. This is also the place for any Asian, Mexican, African, or Central American ingredients. Don't go to your local grocery store for this stuff...they probably won't have it and if they do it'll be overpriced! The fish sauce here is about $.99 and their sesame oil is really reasonable, too. It can be intimidating if you don't know a lot about the ingredients (like me) but it can be an adventure, too. I found some pretty good instant Pho here for less than $.50 which is nice for workday lunches when you're in a jam! They sell bahn mi from one of the nearby Vietnamese-French bakeries...I don't remember which one, but it's a good deal if you're hungry! Pair that with a lime Jarritos and you've got a quick meal! I've had less luck with their citrus, which I've found to be kind of dry-everything else has been good, though. If you're in the Midway area, be sure to check it out! Huge Asian grocery store with the expected scents to greet you upon entry. The fresh produce section is enormous, as is the variety of fish. I go here occasionally in search of lychees for example, or mangoes or persimmons or other Asian vegetables. The price is usually cheaper than regular grocery stores. It's also a good place to find ingredients for Mexican or Spanish or middle eastern cuisines. There is a fresh prepared Thai and Hmong food cafe - have never tried anything from here. Location, location, location. This Asian SUPER-market is located on one of the busiest intersections in the frogtown area. There are lots of others around within walking distance, but this one is best by far. The parking lot is not a maze unlike other Asian markets (Dragon Star, Shuang Hur), and the sq footage is like a mini mall. The prices are all the same give a take a dollar or 2 but you wont be discouraged when everything you need is all-n-one...The deli boosts fresh daily cooked items and the seafood selections are endless (too bad they don't host crawfish). For the deli, if you're ever low on cash, around 6pm, they discount their cooked items to $1. You gotta make a mad dash for it because alot of people do grab these stuff up. read more

Went to Sun Foods to buy something to eat and saw 2 MOLDY nava (I'm sure that there are more but I didn't search farther). I order some food stir-fry (pho) meatballs, chicken & green beans& shrimp fried rice. The first meatball I ate had a sour taste to it so I tried another meatball which tasted perfectly fine. So, I ate a very EXPIRED MEATBALL. I was served 4 expired meatballs. I called the store, talked to the manager, and told her about the food that they were selling that day. She said that she will check on the food and offered a refund but I kindly reject bc I'm sure they didn't mean for me to eat expired food. There is a Hmong Farmers Market in the parking lot of this store on the weekends in the summer. It's really incredible. The variety of produce and herbs will inspire you. I ventured *inside* this store for the first time today. My son and I meandered through very leisurely, picking up and talking about anything that looked interesting. He's a very adventurous almost-8-year-old and will try a bite of nearly anything I cook or set in front of him as long as he had a hand in choosing it at the store. We bought some banana samosas and vegetarian spring rolls (both from the freezer aisle), a beautiful box of fancy mochi, lotus root, baby bok choy, homemade rice noodles, tofu, and mock duck. I wasn't crazy about having to walk through the area with the cuttlefish (!!!) and catfish heads on ice just to get to the mochi, but it certainly made for a learning experience for my son. I'll be back, for sure. It's such a big store that it will take me a while to learn to navigate, so I'll stick to Dragon Star for quick trips. This place has a lot of shrimp and some types of fish. The smoked carp is delicious. Check your produce, though. Lots of it is past its shelf life. Eggrolls are good but the rest of the hot deli can be many weeks old and horrible.
