Commonly referred to as Brunswick Street oval or the Fitzroy cricket ground, this open field was…read moreonce home to the Fitzroy VFL club. It is still home to the local Fitzroy football club as well as juniors and the local cricket club. There are still remnants of the old-school historic fence line and gate that was once used by paying attendees of the football, who first started attending Fitzroy matches in 1883. This ground marks the gateway to Edinburgh gardens from the south. There is a heritage-listed grandstand that sits on the north boundary of the ground that is in immaculate condition. The hill on the north east of the ground, just next to the grandstand, provides the best view in my books. To watch any sporting game from here, with the city as your backdrop is an absolute pleasure. Hundreds of trees surround the ground which is used daily by masses of locals as there is a walking path paved on the outside of the boundary fence. A few years ago they renovated the cricket nets and provided public access to three quality brand new nets.

It's close to the city, but feels like a whole new place. This park has bbq facilities with wooden tables under pavilions, there's not too many spots so you might want to get in early if it's going to be a long weekend (or exceptionally sunny day). There's also a café here that sits besides the river, where you can dine outside and enjoy the serenity. This is definitely perfect for families as there are bike trails, a playground and did I mention the rowboats for hire. Yes rowboats! There's also fishing available, although I'm not sure if you would catch anything here. If you don't like bats, I probably would come here then. I was lying in the sun with my hunny after a lovely picnic, we didn't notice anything at the time- but after careful inspection of the funny looking leaves on the trees, turns out they were bats. A hundred or more bats, hanging from the nearby trees sleeping. They weren't scary, or noisy or obtrusive, it was just a surprise to see so many up close. Bats aside, this is a lovely park. Perfect for whatever occasion.

The park itself is always pretty quiet as not many cars tend to peruse this street. There is a fun playground with lots of unique play equipment. It is very colourful as well. There is a swing set, a climbing frame and some springy toys for young children as well. For older patrons there is a netball and basketball hoop complete with little concrete squares to allow a small game. For cricket fans there is even a set of three wickets in the middle of the reserve. There is plenty of grass to run around on and a nice scattering of trees that provide just the right amount of shade. To help you enjoy the surrounds are three wooden seats. It is a really nice place to relax on a warm afternoon and is big enough for a few people to share without feeling cramped.

This is one of those lovely places where you can have a picnic on one of those lovely summer…read morenights. In fact I have found myself on a few occasions here with friends on just such nights, having purchased food from nearby, and then just sitting on the lawn, or in the rotunda. Thus is certainly one of those lovely little suburban park.

Surrounding it…read morealong either side of Rathdowne St are so many cafés, delis, grocery stores and bakeries that you could come here completely unprepared and still manage to make yourself a mighty fine picnic lunch with little effort. There's even a library across the road so that you can have something to read while you're here too. The park is quite large, with spacious lawns and lots of big shady trees. The playground is set off to one side so that it doesn't look like it takes over the park (and also means that a lot of the kids gravitate away from the biggest, most shady tree of all). There are public toilets here too and a basketball court up the back. There is probably more here that I've yet to discover, but those big shady trees just don't let me get past them to explore what lies beyond.

There is parking available and also a good track to ride your bike or go for a run. It's family orientated, which makes this park very safe. The playground is gated and you can also walk your dogs without a leash. Enjoy your day!

With a generous sized skate park complete with ramps and jumps, perfect for kids right up to... well I even see 30 year old skegs enjoying it, that's how good it is for all ages!! One thing you learn when you have more than one kid is that it's damn hard to find play areas suitable for varying ages. Harmony Park is great for my one year old and five year old alike. Huge play area for kids up to the age of 14, the thing I love about this park is it's designed specifically in mind for toddler safety and as an all abilities playground - meaning every kid gets to join in and experience the fun of the park! Expansive lawn areas to run around, kick a footy or even fly a kite. Shady, convenient seating close by to the play areas, indoor and clean toileting facilities, BBQ area which is shaded...what more could you want in industrial old Coburg!! My third fave place around the inner North to hang with my kids. (Coburg Lake and the Moonee Ponds Lake have to take out number one and two spots.) Only reason it doesn't get five stars is due to the lack of public transport servicing the area.
