    Ginger tea
    John B.

This vegan Thai (really Asian) restaurant offers a wealth of tofu and mock meat goodness. It is receded from the street, but the location is in the heart of the city, surrounded by vegetarian-unfriendly restaurants of all sorts, making it a useful find. Even on a Monday, it was reasonably well-attended, and surprisingly enough, a popular date spot. I felt a little silly ordering two very basic tofu dishes. However, the portion size was not huge, and since I figured it might be a while before I found any more soy-based food in New Zealand, it wasn't that bad of a decision. The smoked tofu appetizer was not bad, though not nearly as delicious as some of the better smoked tofu I've had. Their ma po tofu was likewise tasty enough, but not an elite rendition of such. With their main dishes, they offer the option to upgrade from plain rice to multigrain for fifty cents, which upon having tried it I don't know why you wouldn't. They were out of the one tea I wanted, and the ginger tea I settled for wasn't as special as I might have hoped. That being said, the amount of time I spent poring over the menu, and the overall value of having such a restaurant in this location are significant. If I do find my way back, I imagine I'll try something more Thai.

Ordered green curry. Too bland and vegetables undercooked. Was looking forward to creamy spicy well balanced curry. Really disappointed.

It doesn;t look like anything special from the outset but boy is it special. The Green Crocodile is basically a sandwich bar, but they also do salads and wraps. Pop in there and the lovely old lady will ask you what you'd like. You pick you bread and then fill the sammy with a mountainload of ingredients. Then you can either get it toasted or leave fresh. Yes, it seems like 'just a sandwich bar' but it;s so much more than that. Ther service is so great, and after one visit you'll be treated like a regular, and the amount you get for what you pay is like something from a bygone era. There are no processed ingredients in site and you can really taste the home made freshness. I think that's why it's so good - every sandwich is like the best ever sandwich you could make at home, but canlt be bothered doing. The place is popular, but if there is a wee queue outside, stick it out, it's worth it.

A cheese toasted sandwich is sometimes all that you need, and these are pretty good: the cheese oozes out, and it's all delivered to you hot and tasty. They don't take eft-pos here, so come with cash, although you won't need much; most sandwiches are less than $5. There's also only two tables, so be prepared to takeaway; you can always sit outside on the recently flashed-up Derby Street.

The setting is open and pleasant. The kitchen is in easy view and there are palm trees scattered thoughout the large room. Service was inconsistent. It started off great, perhaps because we were early, and later by 7 pm we were searching for our waiter to bring us the check. This is a slightly overpriced restaurant, perhaps because it is in a hotel. Yet, this is not my definition of "fine dining"...it is strictly a casual affair, both in service and quality/presentation of food. We had a grilled chicken breast , w/ salad, $38. My King Salmon w/ pesto slaw (see photos), was $32. A side of steamed veggies was $8. A reasonable option to dining in downtown.

This "restaurant" has the typical miasma and funk anyone from outside of Auckland would expect from the dirty and infamous road. Wobbly, unclean tables and prison food served in divided tin plates. I have nothing against vegetarians or vegans and have a lot of respect with some of the delicious dishes they can conjure up, but the food here tastes of coloured water with rice and chick peas for substance. Curry with no garlic or onions? Untitled lumpy custard dish made me feel like I was in a very old, very poor school cafeteria, gagging on the religious peace and love and feel-good that should kill any appetite I have left. Maybe if they put some of the natural herbs they're smoking into the dishes we could laugh this off and paint each other's toenails in a log cabin in the woods and name all the stars this place will never get.

They serve a range of delicious vegetarian meals and salads. Their breakfasts are out of this world! I usually order the Lemon Pancakes ($13.90) which comes with grilled banana, mixed berries, maple syrup and creme fraiche or the French Toast ($14.50) with the exact same accompaniments. Both are very filing and delicious and will keep you full till lunchtime! For lunch, I either order the Curry Vegetable Soup ($8.50) which consists of pumpkin, carrot and onion and is served with focaccia bread or I really enjoy the Toasted Feta Sandwich ($10.20) - both are equally delicious. But the real deal is definitely their salad bar. You can choose from a bowl or plate size and fill it up with as many salads as you like. Some of the salads include: roasted mixed vegetables, salad greens with avocado and cucumber, soba noodles, pumpkin, beetroot, chickpeas, kidney/broad beans and cauliflower/broccoli. Then when you've finished piling it mountain high, you can add as many olives, nuts, gherkins, jalapenos and cottage cheese to your salad as you wish. So amazing! They also make hot drinks, smoothies and juices. I have ordered a Mocha twice and both times, it was delicious and extra extra hot (just how I like it!). I recommend this cafe to all. I'm not a complete vegetarian but I do enjoy vegetarian food a lot. The food is great, the service is quick and friendly and the portion sizes are perfect. Absolutely delicious every time!

Parking is pretty good that part of Parnell and so once we walked all the way into the depths of the building on the ground floor all was well. We were seated quickly, and had our waitress come with water and to answer any additional questions promptly. She recommended a number of sharing plates, which was fine by us as we thought that would probably be a good way to go anyway. We started off with some of the lotus chips which were awesome. We then received a selection of dishes including lamb short ribs, crispy pork ribs (a winner), supposedly very spicy bang bang chicken in lettuce cups (it wasn't that spicy but had a bit of kick and was delicious too), Crispy squid tentacles were also a popular choice. The kung pao soft shell crab was tasty but a bit small serving wise, and the dumplings all tasty too. The pork belly was average, nothing wrong with it but not a standout. My wife especially liked the slow cooked beef shin. Service was excellent, food was tasty and interesting, restaurant a little dimly lit but very cool nevertheless (perhaps better for dates than family dining but I'm being picky here). My only quibble is value, it's not bad value for money but it wasn't great value either. If it were slightly cheaper I wouldn't hesitate to score it 5/5. However, that is not a deterrent to me wanting to try the restaurant again, as the Rest of the package was all of a very high standard. We will be back for sure.
