Once roofing was completed, nails started popping off roof and Onto yard and driveway. Then shingles ripped off during first Windstorm. Roofers came back to re apply. Nails continued to Pop off all over yard. Following year shingles ripped off from wind Again. This time I had to pay $350.00 to have this repaired 6 months later, Sunik Roofing sent me a bill stating OVERDUE PAYMENT REQUIRED. I had already paid them 6 months ago for original faulty shingle application. Many Problems for unprofessional work. read more

Skylight Concepts recommended Sunik Roofing as doing excellent work. End of August 2010, Sunik Roofing began the work. They quoted the job at $12,000 to take 3 days. It took 7 days, to no fault of Sunik Roofing. I have an extremely steep A-line roof, with a few peaks. Three workers spent 1 day setting up safety lines. It took a day, because my roof joists were not running the usual direction. This house was designed by an artist, and he and a friend of his in construction built the house. Not everything was done the way a contractor who builds houses for a living would do. Day 2, seven guys began working. The first 3 days were in the heat of the sun, the next 3 in the cold wind, and sometimes light rain. They worked from 9 a.m. until 9:45 pm, when it was dusk. By the time they packed up to drive away, it was dark, and pitch black. I live in the country. They worked hard everyday, and they did an excellent job. They earned every dollar. Roof lines don't come anymore difficult and dangerous, than mine. I tipped each of them. They deserved it. The final day was a Sunday, and 2 fellows spent half the day cleaning up. When these guys anticipate a job will take only 3 days, they're scheduled to start the next day. When a job sets them back 4 days ... now they are behind for their next job, and they still get paid the same amount. No matter, my roof took them 4 extra days, they did an excellent job. BTW, after my roof was done, I watched a Holmes on Holmes program regarding roofing in Toronto, and what to look for. I had 4 roofers come to give me a quote, and Sunik Roofing is the ONLY roofing coming that pulled out a ladder, and actually climbed up on my roof to take measurements to determine the estimated cost. Two roofing companies walked around my house to take a look, then sent me an estimate. And one roofing guy walked around my house with a measuring tape ... supposedly taking measurements for the estimate. Mike Holmes said a roofing company should ALWAYS bring his ladder to climb up on the roof and measure it properly. If they don't, look for another roofer. Because Nick at Sunik had done this, and it took him 45 to 60 minutes to measure my roof, I felt proud, that I had made the right choice. Five Stars for Sunik Roofing! You won't have any regrets. Also, 1.5 yrs later, I had problems with water coming in my chimney, into my house, causing damage. It only happened with the rain was blown from a particular direction, and coming down heavy. Supposedly, another roofing company had fixed the "too small cap, made for my chimney" 6 yrs ago. NOT. Sunik guys came out, climbed on my roof in the rain, measured, and had a custom built cap made for my chimney. It cost $860.00, they installed it a week later. The cost of the damage caused by the rain coming in was more, and not covered by insurance. I could only take the word of the last roofing company, as my roof is too steep for me to climb, and I'm terrified of heights (female), so I'd never be climbing on my roof to check the job was actually done. So Thank you Sunik Roofing! read more

I was overseas working when I had to get my roof reshingled in Calgary. I was forced to use my wife to oversee this process, as I was on the other side of the planet. Unfortunately, as an overseas co-owner of the home, I was not informed by Sunik Roofing of the two year warranty period on the home, which requires, apparently, a payment for renewal of the warranty. Four years later, the Sunik Roofing roof work has been found to be leaking water into the living room during this weeks rain in Calgary; after my home management company was informed of the leak by the tenant, I called the company asking them to do an estimate for repair on their own faulty work, the company then said they would sent an estimator for $250 Canadian...when I asked the person on the phone why they were trying to charge for an estimate (when in fact, my home manager had lined up another roofer who was giving an estimate for free, which is standard construction practice), the rep on the line said this was actually a service call, and they would fix the leak plus charge a service call fee for the roofing technician (charge me for the estimate, and the fix). This was just a play on words, and an attempt at charging for an estimate. As I filed a complaint with the BBB on this practice of predatory pricing on an estimate by Sunik Roofing for their own botched work, I noted that the Sunik Roofing good BBB rating was actually on two Sunik Roofing offices to the North of Calgary in rural areas, and in fact the office in Calgary (the office I just called which installed the leaky roof) has never been rated by a consumer before at the BBB until I put a poor rating in yesterday to the Better Business Bureau yesterday. So do not do like I did, and use the BBB alone as a judgement tool with respect to the work of this contractor; check other sources of information, specific to City of Calgary, as you cannot rely on one source of information on contractors for their work. Check several previous direct references from the company within Calgary, especially references that are in the 4 to 8 year range for roofs, in order to determine the long-term quality of Sunik Roofings work...which from my perspective, as I face potentially costly repairs (the other contractor is doing the estimate right now on the leak), could lead you - in reality - to a leaky roof later. read more

Well, hubby did all the research, and there's a reason why Sunik came up so often in BBB searches. Fast, professional -- and they *get it* that having your rood redone is disruptive and messy. They do their best to minimize the trauma to the house and people living in it. They were the best prepared of the three roofers we called for an estimate, had the best "presentation", and were the most professional. They submitted aerial photos of our house, showing us the damage and areas of wear. They gave us a list of houses nearby to go check out the various types and colors of roofs. They stuck to the price, the deadline, and they even schedule subsequent visits to make sure every nail and scrap of material is cleaned up. (Not all roofers are that conscientious: We've had neighbors get their roofs done with other companies, who have let the packing materials just drift all around the neighborhood.) It's not a purchase that people plan for (and it's not cheap!) but Sunik did a fantastic job, and we would easily recommend them without hesitation. read more

History
Established in 1989.
Sunik Roofing as a family owned and operated company, has specialized in residential and commercial sloped roofing systems. During our 25+ years in business in the Calgary area, our goal has always been to offer quality roofs at competitive prices.
Meet the Business Owner: Nick S.
Founder and president, Nick Sims, began roofing in the 1970s in the United States where he learned and developed innovations that were years ahead of practices used in Calgary. There he built his skill foundation by running roofing crews and learning the operational tools for success. So in 1987 in Calgary he opened Sunik Enterprises with his wife, Sue Sims, creating a name that combined theirs. Together they subcontracted work from other contractors until they changed the name to Sunik Construction Incorporated in 1989. A founding principle of Sunik is to build the team from the ground up. They look for young ambitious candidates and spend the time to train them and develop their career. This philosophy led to the addition of co-owner Lowell McNichol, who came on board in 1990 as a labourer and later a partner in 1996. Since then, Nick's sons (Nicholas Sims and Nathan Sims) have joined the team and become an integral part of the company!
