We…read morewanted to stay somewhere over night, close enough to Madison, but just off the beaten path so we could get some R&R. We ended up finding Prevailing Winds Lodge, and lucky for us there was 1 room available. 2 days later we had to force ourselves to get back to Chicago for work, but we could have stayed there indefinitely. This place just opened up in May, and it's run by a husband and wife team. I have stayed in many bed and breakfast's over the years, but this was the first time I was blown away. There are 44 acres of prairie on the grounds, including a chicken coop that provides fresh eggs for the guests, exquisite wildlife and hiking paths, a firepit, and breathtaking views all around the property. Indoors a 20+ foot tall stone fireplace, antique organ, and gigantic black leather sofa and chairs, sets the rustic feel and puts you at instant ease and comfort. 24 hours a day guests have access to fresh water infused with different fresh flavors such as lemon, cucumber, or berries grown on the property, as well as freshly baked goods such as scones, bars, and brownies. Detailed wooden furniture and artwork keep your eyes wandering and curious from room to room. As a photographer, this place was a dream come true for me. Now onto what makes this lodge the best bed and breakfast I have ever experienced: the food. It was heavenly. Steve and Jen bake goodies fresh every day. While we were there, we enjoyed brownies, chocolate-caramel granola bars, mullberry scones and muffins, chocolate covered cake balls, and chocolate covered strawberries. We stayed out late and missed turn-down service twice, so Steve brought us the goodies in the morning. Guests also have 24 access to tea and freshly ground coffee. For breakfast day 1, we enjoyed yogurt, granola, and fresh berries as well as freshly baked bread, butter, and mullberry jam. Then Steve asked us how we like our eggs. He ended up cooking us each a pepper, ham, and cheese scramble which was out of this world. He even added jalapeños because I told him how I like my eggs spicy! We were served unlimited bacon and his homemade hash browns as well. Day 2 there was baked french toast with an array of sauces- and there is always fresh squeezed orange juice at the table. On day 2 we had unlimited sugar-cured bacon... And anything you want, Steve and Jen will customize for you. They really put you at ease and make your stay as comfortable as possible. My boyfriend looked at me as we enjoyed some Morrocan Mint tea while watching the sunrise outside on the patio, and he asked me " Did we die? Is this heaven?" Lastly, the rooms are 5 star, possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. And the bathrooms are great too- luxurious soaps and shampoo are provided, as well as lush, cotton robes that we never wanted to take off. So call it a bed and breakfast if you will, but Prevailing Winds Lodge goes above and beyond my high expectations. We felt like Royalty, and there is nothing but great vibes there. To be fair to the owner, we did arrive 30 minutes before check-in as we were on the road all day and simply wanted to walk the grounds rather than drive around for 30 minutes more. The owner was not pleased at all that we were early even though we just wanted to park the car and not check-in. She made it very clear multiple times how this was an inconvenience to her. Again, this may have been a really off day for her as others were happy during their multiple stays there. But to be fair to us, we felt a B&B should be a warm welcoming place and we did not feel this way at all.

This bed and breakfast is a peaceful setting with comfortable rooms, gracious hosts, and delicious food. The location is a few short miles of scenic pastoral landscape from Spring Green. The only traffic we experienced was a tractor on its way to a family farm. Once there, you can hear the cicadas, crickets, and birds along with the breeze blowing through the nearby trees. There are walking paths with butterflies and other wildlife to see. It is an edenic setting that will refresh your soul. Our room, called "The Secret Hideaway," was tucked away on the lower level with two entryways, one leading out to a spacious patio. The room itself had a couple full beds and a futon. The bathroom is good sized with a nice shower. There is a TV we never turned on, but I'm confident it would work if anyone required screen time (I did not). There are dehumidifiers, fans and other devices that made the room extremely comfortable despite temperatures in the 90's while we were there. Your hosts, Elise and Kevin, are welcoming and give you a quick "lay of the land" upon arrival. There is a refrigerator for you to store your refreshments, but they provide wonderful baked goods, lemonade, iced tea (we came for Labor Day weekend) and other items in the small community kitchenette. There are plenty of comfortable sofas, chairs and other amenities that have been thoughtfully laid out for guests who are just relaxing on site. You'll see Kevin around the property during the day, and busily feeding guest at breakfast as he is the main chef. Elise greets you, shows you around, and introduces you to the ensemble cast of animals such as the family dog, chickens, and hummingbirds. Almost immediately, you feel welcomed. As you can see from the pictures, the food is as visually appealing as it is appetizing. Fresh fruit, vegetables grown on site and eggs from the resident chickens combine for a great meal to start your day. Everything was delicious and you are served at your table with plenty of coffee and juice available. Outstanding! If you are going to American Players Theater for shows, checking out the local art and music scene, taking in the beauty of southwestern Wisconsin, or checking out the home and inspiration of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Silver Star Bed and Breskfast Inn is a excellent choice for your lodging needs.

Many plants (including robust, HUGE ones) that I can't recall seeing anywhere before (not even at Olbrich or Butchart gardens). If the weather during my stay hadn't been muggy much of the time, I would have spent time relaxing out there (e.g., on the porch swing), doing nothing at all. * The view. No, not even the best hosts in the world can take credit for that. Still, one must take that great, eternal, gorgeous Lake Mendota into consideration when deciding whether to stay here. * The housekeeper: Her sweetness and friendliness is worth mentioning, even though only a very small detail. * Parking: Not a problem for me. I suppose that, when the inn might be entirely full, and those who book all 7 rooms each have a car, then the loser of Musical Chairs on any given night (only 6 spots) will have to make sure to move their car by 10 am if they park in one of the two-hour spots on the street (as I opted to do the first night; no problem. And, although I forgot to check, I got the impression that some of East Gorham, along which the inn sits, MIGHT be unlimited parking.) ..................................... Well, the negatives are just too many and significant not to share . . . but I always give credit where credit is due (see above), and the hosts most assuredly love and take pride in their home and inn, and have only the best intentions, and probably believe that they're providing nothing but quality: * I booked the "Garden" Room -- as a single guest, and wanting the lowest price. Well, having now just revisited their website, shame on me (a little bit) for having assumed or thought that "lower level" meant the ground floor . . . and not the basement. Sure, "basement" isn't a very appealing word, but at least it would have amounted to something closer to truth in advertising. As another reviewer noted, the room is at the bottom of some challenging steps (at least, for me, at 71, with knee arthritis having recently deciding to enter a new and fun stage). Creaky steps. LOUD, creaky steps. (A sound that I also had to hear whenever the hosts and housekeeper were also presumably using them to get up and down occasionally. Oh, and I also really enjoyed the sound of floors creaking above me.) * As for those quotation marks: Folks, what one sees out the window of the "Garden" Room is, mostly, an ugly window well. (If you didn't grow up with, or have never seen, window wells and don't know what they are, look it up.) I did also see SOME flora . . . but only a few dregs of something or other, just visible at soil level, above said window well. * Breakfast: We put our choice of "custom" breakfast onto a slip that makes no mention of meat options. When I inquired, host David said, "Oh, we don't eat meat in this house" -- in the sort of "What could be more obvious or unimpeachable?" tone that sometimes gives us radical leftists a bad name. Well, among my many jobs as a young man was making TOFU. (As well, as, not long after, also making FUTONS. Must have been in my anagram phase.) So I know from vegetarianism. I understand and respect those who've made a solid commitment to it. Hurrah! Applause to you! Kudos. BUT IF "WE" NOT EATING MEAT ("IN THIS HOUSE") ACTUALLY MEANS "AND NEITHER WILL YOU", THEN FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S WHOLLY (unlike your disclosure) DISCLOSE THAT ON YOUR WEBSITE! (Sorry, guys, but "We offer options for vegetarian, gluten free and vegan diets" comes close, but alas, no cigar. This ain't horseshoes.) * Not quite done! The site says that breakfast is "served 7-10 am" . . . when in fact only the continental-style stuff (which, FYI isn't really any better than at any decent motel chain) is available during those hours. HOT food is only served 7:30 to 8:30. And, it's only two choices (which is fine), but it's only those SAME two choices EVERY DAY: (i) Waffle (blueberries/whipped cream optional); or (ii) A scrambled EGG (with spinach in it, if you like). That's egg. Singular. And, well, not quite as firm or fully done as one might like. (Note my under-statement. Much like the UNDER-cooking.) And "hash browns"? Limp, pale, soggy. * I had the waffle on my final morning -- good, but mine was only a complete breakfast because I included ham that I'd made a point of buying at a supermarket, and kept in my room fridge. (I also had it on day two, along with a lovely sticky bun I'd also bought elsewhere). * The Phantom Host model is really only appropriate for the Airbnb crowd; not so much for a true B&B. OK, so this place is "hybrid" -- but at least come by, during the advertised breakfast hours, to the extent of checking to see that things like the half and half, and COFFEE, haven't run out! One shouldn't have to dig out their cell phone (mine isn't grafted onto my hand permanently) to call the hosts. Thus, only the one star, notwithstanding the best of intentions.

Which is so important. Two slight problems that may be specific to the room we were staying in. The padlock on the door was pretty touchy. It took us at least three tries to get into our room each time. I would've much preferred a card key. The second problem we had was the volume on our TV. It didn't work properly. It was very loud, but you could not turn it down, nor could you turn it up. We're pretty tech savvy and we could not figure out how to solve this problem. And since there's no one on site, although the ladies were very good at getting back to us quickly, I didn't feel like walking into an empty lobby at night to try to grab a remote. That was the solution. That being said, it was a lovely stay. And the two women who run the motel are very responsive if you have a problem.

Not a large room but not small either. Linens were quality. Room was quiet. TV was functional with cable. Loved the in room Keurig. Bathroom was big, lots of towels, Bath and Body Works lotions, soaps and shampoos. Takes a minute or two for hot water to get up to the sixth floor, but it will get there. Ironing board was hiding in the closet. Lowell has other mentionable amenities. The pool is large and clean. There are computers in the lobby if you need one. So happy to find some much needed afternoon coffee in the lobby right when I needed it. The breakfast buffet was ample; better than a Holiday Inn. Cereals, yogurts, cut fruit, bananas, apples, waffle makers, bagels, toasters, sausages, eggs to order, coffee, juices, teas and probably some other stuff too. Would for sure stay here again.

Loss of business is the only (legal) way to deal with her, though, some day, someone with no regard for her life will get ripped off by her, and deal with her their own way. Not a Threat from me, just a prediction. Playing with fire usually burns the player. She will get burned.
