I stopped in for a late lunch while in the area checking out the beautifully enlarged and renovated Carnegie library next door. The menu had a good number of options without being completely overwhelming. I had a grilled Rachel sandwich which was messy but good. I should have let it cool a little more before biting into it. The fries were light and crispy. The coleslaw was not overly sweet, just needed a little touch of salt. The place was very clean and comfortable. My server was excellent, pleasant and attentive. After our power went out at home due to a storm I needed a quick place to get a hot breakfast for my daughter before school. After going to another local breakfast place and seeing their moldy fruit next to the cash register, I thought I would try Sunny's. When we walked in there was no wait and a nice women greated and sat us right away. I let her know we were in a hurry so we would be ordering quickly. She gave us a couple of minutes to look at the menu and came back promptly, took our order and had our drinks soon after. Our food was out in minutes, hot, fresh, and perfect! This is defiantly a home town dinner kind of feel. Not fancy but lots of decent options and the mugs are ceramic (unlike another breakfast place here in Ashland). Apparently the cook was having an off day, for the Golden Brown French Toast was a disgrace. Very good coffee, and great service that was the perfect level of attentive was what saved them from a one-star rating. I said what I said. I am looking at pictures people have posted, and getting some level of FOMO. These limp pieces of barely eggy bread I was served had no texture, no sweetness, and no flavor. Butter and syrup helped a little, but when you start with something near flavorless, you end up with butter and syrup for breakfast... no thanks. Another thing, and this is more on me than anything. If you're getting the French Toast, be advised it comes with nothing else. If you want potatoes, bacon, eggs, etc. you have to order it as a side. Value-wise, $6.99 is pretty decent, but should you want sides, it will add up quick. read more

I have been coming here for months, because it's the closest one to my house. Every single time, I'm disappointed. Whether it's busy or slow, and I have a different waitress every time - either the food is wrong, nobody checks back, or the overall atmosphere is subpar. This is my FIRST review, as I'm a server at another local diner, and always try to give the benefit of the doubt, but this is ridiculous. Either the staff is untrained, unmotivated, or out of it. I ask for very cooked onions, and I received microwaved ones in my omelette. Like in most restaurants, they microwave the vegetables separately before adding them into an omelette, but come on. Clear as day onions, and no evidence of it touching a grill top. No big deal, but I ask for ranch after I flag down my waitress and then I don't get it. There's only a handful of tables in the restaurant. This isn't even worth the $10. I will drive to Marlboro or even further, because this is just appalling. Bring my food out warm (I'm not even expecting it hot), ask me how it is after you see us start to eat, ask us if we need anything, and that's it. It's not that hard. Busy diner with limited parking near Ashland town square. One of the few diners that serves biscuits and sausage gravy. Breakfast served in large portions, but mediocre in terms of taste. Eggs were a bit dry and appeared to be pre-cooked in large batches, then divided into individual portions. Bacon was unevenly cooked, crispy burnt on one half, fatty an flimsy on the other half. I prefer the crispy half. Pancakes were ok when soaked with syrup. Lox Benedict was very good. read more

I don't understand what happened to this place. I always enjoyed eating here in the past and have been many many times, but yesterday we had a downright horrible experience. We arrived about 9:30am, there were maybe 5-7 tables of customers plus 5-6 people at the counter. Seemed to be only one waitress but that doesn't seem like an overwhelming amount of people for one waitress to handle. As per the sign, we seated ourselves. The one waitress seemed overly flustered and didn't make it over to us for a good five minutes while meanwhile the girl at the register stood there with absolutely nothing to do. And a second waitress sat at the counter reading the paper. When we finally received our coffee which was quickly dropped at the table, it was in filthy mugs. Clearly it had been served in dirty mugs. There was literally food stuck all over the inside of the mug and onion pieces floating in my coffee. It was nauseating! And to make matters worse we sat there for ten minutes with that coffee in front of us waiting for the waitress to come back and take our order. I wish I had thought to snap a photo as it's hard to even believe how disgusting it was. When she finally did come back and we pointed out the dirty mugs she wasn't overly apologetic but at least she quickly got us new coffee and didn't leave us sitting there once again. The food was unremarkable. We both had omelettes which were fine but the homefries were on the cold side and not really seasoned. The check was dropped at our table pretty much right after our food and we were never checked on to see if we needed anything. We were annoyed but not surprised to see that we were still charged for our coffee. I'm not one to usually ever say anything when asked if everything was alright but I planned on having an answer when I went up to the register to pay. Well I never got a chance to say as I wasn't even asked. What kind of restaurant doesn't even ask how your meal was? I guess the same one where you have a flustered waitress running around while another stands at the register and a third sits at the counter reading the paper while people sit and wait for their coffee for ten minutes or more. Am I crazy to think there's a better way to utilize your help? Definitely will not be going back! read more

This place looks like a hole in the wall on the outside (I love hole in the wall places!) and it has a diner feel on the inside. Parking is limited out front and a lot of people park across the street. When you come, I strongly recommend the baked apple pancakes! I get them every time. They have cinnamon apples baked right into them and it tastes like an apple pie and a pancake had a baby. So good! The service is pretty good...like most places, it just depends on the server you get. The first time I came, the server was a young guy who was really excited about life and happy and attentive to the table. This place takes credit cards but the servers give you your bill and then you take it up front to pay. It's not like other restaurants where the server takes your card/cash. Lol the first time I went, I waited a while for the server to come pick up my credit card before I noticed that people were going up to the front to pay. Sunnyside Cafe is one of those go to brunch places when your around Framingham or Ashland. Open from the wee hours of the morning till around 2 pm everyday their omelette's are always large and in charge with a host of varied ingredients and breakfast sandwiches are stacked high. If your brave, try something off the specials menu. Usually it's well worth the money and the dish is both creative and delicious. However every egg has its runny days so if your disappointed-- you didn't get that tip from me. My favorite thing at Sunnyside is the omelettes. Go forth and eat as many as you can; they have over 10 different styles and many of which you can create your own. If you're craving something sweet for breakfast choose the french toast or the silver dollar pancakes. They are warm, fluffy, and usually adorned with a hunk of whipped butter. Mmmmm. If you're going to order a stack of fancy pancakes be prepared to unbuckle your belt-- they are huge. But be warned: the center is ALWAYS undone. I've been going to Sunnyside for about 5 years, trust me I know. Eat around the outside and just admit defeat in the middle. On a more professional side, Sunnyside is really open to substitutions and the servers are courteous ( but perhaps not the most happy) about such requests. Leave them a big tip and enjoy your meal, your way. Tips: - You pay at the counter after your meal so don't leave the money on the table-- the server will mistake it for a hefty tip. - If your coming around 9 am on a saturday expect to wait. There isn't very much waiting room inside but the wait isn't usually very long - You may get a grumpy waitress-- but it doesn't usually affect the service. They'll pout. You still get your food. Sunnyside should be all of those wonderful things but it's never really has been and has o my gotten worse as the years go on. From what I looked at, fairly clean Price: I got the same amount of food that I would get at my old breakfast place for a little cheaper. Food: I'm an avid corned beef hash person. If the menu says homemade, it shouldn't look like the canned stuff. I eat the canned stuff, and it was slightly better at best. The hash browns on the side weren't hot (first 2 bites I took off the plate). Poached eggs were undercooked (clear whites inside). Lastly, the ketchup. Great options (though I have a hard time steering away from my beloved Light Eggs Benedict - served with broccoli, tomato and a fruit cup), and good prices. Wayyyyy better than any kind of a chain breakfast spot. Many of the hosts working there appear to be high school students. They have ALWAYS been polite, and genuinely seem to enjoy working there. The service is alright. Not always the most friendly ever, but they get the job done correctly. I find that I always have someone who is either refreshing my coffee cup every two seconds, or I get someone who has to be flagged down for a refill. I am a stickler for service, and it has never been poor enough for me to say, "that was a bad experience". It's a great local place that I am happy to be a patron of. read more

So the kids and I had a "lunch out with Daddy" here yesterday. Mr. Bethany has morning meeting here every Tuesday so I know that they serve a decent breakfast -- he raves about the Super Meadow Muffin. I have to say I was impressed by both the food and service yesterday. The waitress that we has was a dear and her coworkers helped out when asked. The chicken fingers, plain burger and accompanying fries were so good that my kids actually ate -- and ate -- with little chatter. An amazing feat with toddlers. My simple turkey breast on toasted multi grain bread with romaine lettuce was done well and filling. Although the turkey was standard it was so moist I didn't even use a condiment. Mr. Bethany's hamburger was cooked a perfect medium ( barely pink ) and the toppings were also fresh and tasty. Our lunch guest had a BLT that was good as the rest of the dishes. The waitress even brought out a small plate of extra pickle spears for my kids when she heard us talking about how good they were. Here's a few "highlights" of our experience: - We had to ask multiple times for a refill on coffee. - We only got one refill the entire 2 hours even after asking - The waitress yelled us for saying "yay" when we finally got her to bring more coffee saying "I have other tables to wait" - It took us another 20 minutes to pay the bill. They saw we had a credit card and just walked away from the register. 15 minutes later, they returned and did not acknowledge / apologize for the extra wait. The homefries were room temp or worse, there were a few pieces that were actually Cold!! How does that happen? If I go anywhere for breakfast, it's here! If you live in Ashland, it's probably one of your favorites too. I have been coming here for longer than I can remember, and it's consistently great. I'm not sure of the exact hours, but they were open at 6am when I went and I know they close at 2pm. The food is always good and hot, and the service is always timely. It has a warm, home like atmosphere to it, which I think keeps people coming back. I usually get the '2+2+2', two eggs any style, two sausage links or bacon strips, 2 pancakes or french toast, and home fries. It's the perfect breakfast plate and definitely filling. I recommend coming here to anyone that asks about a good breakfast place, quality food, good service, and reasonable prices. read more

This place is great! I went here for the first time a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised. I've been avoiding J&M in Framingham ever since it has been unbelievably overcrowded on the weekends and my last experience there was subpar. This diner has a nice home-y feel to it, it's a good size, and the menu has many options. I got the western omelette with homefries, a chocolate milk (wasn't great they don't use the good stuff) and shared mozzarella sticks with my friend. The omelette was huge and it wasn't super expensive like other diners (ahem J&M) so it was nice to not spend 11 dollars on eggs and homefries for once. Generous portions and the food was delicious! I was truly disappointed. Base on the reviews I expected better. Talk about a shock when I was told by the server that the kitchen couldn't make my bacon limp because they make all the bacon first thing in the morning. Then it took over 20 minutes to get our breakfast. Now, I will be the first to admit that I drink alot and I let the servers know that up front. I will typically ask for a second cup of ice tea without any ice so that the server doesn't have to check back so frequently. Not only did the server not bring a second cup of tea but waited until after the food was served to provide that cup. Now, I will say the tea was really good and I love the ice that they served. I typically will give a place 3 chances before making up my mind on it. But due to the service and the unwillingness to cook an item the way I wanted and to receive mediocre food I believe it will be a very long time before I return. read more

Unlikes it's salty corned-beef cousin, the roast beef hash is nice 'n' savory, and the omelette was really tasty. Good breakfast potatos/hash browns too. Nice 'n' fluffy, but crispy too. Went to Sunnyside after a long absence. I understand ownership has changed. It was a Sunday around 10:30 and we waited a few minutes, 3 parties ahead of us. We were offered a beverage and received a coofee and large tomato juice, although size was not discussed and a small juice or coffee are supposed to come with many breakfast options. I like the fact that at least 3 times on the menu 'Homemade Corned Beef Hash is mentioned, including the sticker added on so I ordered poached eggs and hash plus fruit and specified soft eggs. 1 eggs was properly runny, the other a little harder but not a deal breaker. The nicely browned hash was straight from a can so I was dissapointed. Over easy eggs with sausage were fine. We were charged for a large juice, nonetheless. read more

We've only eaten in here for breakfast: service is fast, it's a typical family-diner type place. The menu is large, which is a plus, and the food is good. I love their pancakes. We did order take-out from here for lunch over the weekend, just a couple of sandwiches. Can't really review it, as my fiance's errands lasted longer than he planned, so our food was ready about 45 minutes before he could pick it up. I love the Sunnyside, it's our go-to-breakfast joint. Like, literally, we go there for breakfast. Specials on the wall are always good to check out, but it's the happiest day when the farmer's cheese omelet is a special. So delicious. Owner will sometimes make it if it's not a special that week, so ask your server (who may be a little curt, but always comes through). Cute little old school merry-go-round is a hit for the kids, but literally, watch out not to hit their heads helping them off the mini-horses. I've seen many a kid get beaned. This is basically the only local breakfast joint that I would go to in Ashland - it's crowded on the weekends for a reason: it's good and there aren't really any other breakfast joints close by! Normally the crowd at the front door waiting for a seat will keep us away - but every once in a while, when the crowd isn't too large (early on a Sunday is a great time to go - I guess while people are at church?), we grab a nice, quick breakfast here. I have only had one thing, every single time I go, because it is THE BEST: egg, cheese and bacon on a Portuguese muffin with a side of homefries. SO GOOD. Their home fries are of the chunky potatoes with onions and peppers variety - never my favorite, but here they are pretty good. They taste like they actually use real butter in them instead of just plain old oil, which is a bonus and adds to the flavor.
