I came in at lunch time around 1:00 and there were no tables as it is pretty small on the inside. This was on a random Wednesday and so I would say probably be prepared to wait. I was able to sit at one of the spots that was left at the bar. Interior is nice. Staff (especially the one server) seemed overwhelmed. She was very friendly nonetheless. Only appeared to be two other people working: a single cook and a woman bussing tables. I liked the lobster roll that I got. Fresh if a bit under-seasoned. I ordered the soup of the day, the Hungarian Potato Soup and a Lobster roll. Both were very good and very tasty. The soup was very hearty. I would definitely order it again. We stopped in here for breakfast with the dogs before heading to the beach because they are pet friendly on the patio out front. It is a little weird to get to though- it's right next to a hotel and an apartment office and you have to walk past the office along the side of the building to get to the restaurant. They have a cute trellis and lots of plants/flowers to look at, so it's a quaint little spot. Our server was really sweet and brought out coffee and mimosas really fast and then gave us time to sip and look over the menu. We had wanted to order a side of meat for the dogs to share and decided on sausage (thinking it was just plain) because they had bacon the day before. She asked if we wanted it for the dogs and told us it was very spicy and she wouldn't recommend it for them, which was very helpful and we got the bacon instead. I have been going to Sunnyside with my family and friends for at least 12 years and have enjoyed every meal. The owners are hands on and very friendly. The atmosphere is open and cute and has a cozy and quiet ambiance. The service is excellent and all of the items I have had, mainly breakfast, have been wonderful and fresh. Great stop I stopped in for breakfast a few minutes after they had opened. That gave me my choice of tables, I opted for one outside. With the threat of Covid rising again, I felt very safe outside on this somewhat breezy day. Road noise and piped music were my audio companions this morning. My very pleasant server, who seated me, headed right off to get me coffee while I looked over the menu. They had a few house specialties listed on the menu and even had a special Benedict this morning. I decided instead on The Brave One, an omelette made with bacon, a homemade sausage (excellent), jalapeno, cubanelle peppers, onion, and cheese. A side of salsa provided more flavor with chopped tomato and even more onion. It took a little longer for my food to arrive than I would normally expect, but having arrived so soon after opening, they may have still been getting set up for the day. My omelette was packed with ingredients. Bravery was not required, I didn't notice any heat, and it was delicious. It came with toast, and I got a side of potato pancake, an almost crusty disc of shredded potato mixed with onion and parsley. I very much liked all of it. Even though I was outside my server kept tabs on me, checking on me, topping off my coffee a few times. The check ready when I was. It was a great visit and a great start to the day. read more

We enjoyed our breakfast/brunch at Sunnyside Cafe, though there was a wait and service was a bit slow. If you come during a peak time and have the time and patience, then I think this place is worth it. I can't comment on the dinner service where they offer more adventurous and high-end items like foie gras and bone marrow, but for breakfast and lunch, this is a simple cafe that serves classic American comfort food. We were flying out of nearby Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) and had about 1.5 hours to kill. Sunnyside Cafe is only about a mile from the airport. I saw it had a great 4.5-star average Yelp rating with over 275 reviews, so our group of five decided to stop here for breakfast/brunch before heading to the airport. We arrived around 10:40am on a Sunday and the restaurant was already at capacity, inside and out. This place isn't tiny, but it isn't huge either. There were groups ahead of and behind us on the waitlist. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes for a table, which wasn't terrible. We didn't have time to waste when we were seated, though. Sunnyside Cafe is located in what appears to be a former motel front office and dining building. In the back, on the same lot, are low-rent apartments (Oakridge Apartments). The entire property reminded me of the 2017 Oscar-nominated film The Florida Project. Typical old Florida motel. I actually liked the "motel dining" atmosphere. It's a unique characteristic and part of the experience. During our Sunday late morning visit, we were handed breakfast and lunch menus. I believe we all ordered off the breakfast menu. Breakfast-wise, Sunnyside served mostly an assortment of egg and omelette plates along with Belgian waffles, pancakes, and French toast. Breakfast prices were $7-13 each for most plates. Lunch-wise, Sunnyside served soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and typical American entrees like grilled salmon, New York strip, and grilled chicken breast. Lunch prices ran $11-15 each for most entrees. There was a note on the menu that said, "Every dish is made fresh to order! We appreciate your patience." Something to keep in mind. While we were waiting for what seemed like an extended amount of time for our food, one of my friends noticed there was a lot of standing around by some of the kitchen staff. I was facing away from the kitchen, so I didn't notice. I ordered a Sunnyside Eggs Benedict ($12) made with two poached eggs and house-cured salmon over a toasted English muffin and topped with housemade Hollandaise sauce. Sunnyside Cafe's Eggs Benedicts come with a side of either potato pancake or seasonal fruit medley. I went with the latter. It consisted of slices of apple, banana, and strawberry. Fresh and ripe. I thought the Sunnyside Eggs Benedict was delicious. The plate was cooked well and hit the spot. It proved to be nice and filling ahead of hours of airports and air travel. If you like Eggs Benedict, I recommend it. One of my friends got the same thing and, if his cleared plate was any indication, he was satisfied too. I also got an Iced Coffee ($3) to which I added my own cream and sugar. I think their iced coffee is the same as their regular house coffee, just chilled and over ice. A couple of my friends got the Belgian waffles and/or French toast (I forget which ones exactly, but both cost $7 each and $9 each with fruit). They upgraded to the optional Vermont Maple Syrup for $1.50 each. Unfortunately, however, our server forgot about it. The servers were very busy helping other customers. After waiting a while for a server to come back to our table - I think the servers thought we were set and that's why they didn't come back to ask us if we needed anything - one of the guys had to get up and find a server to let them know that they had not received the Vermont Maple Syrup they had ordered. The rest of us were nearly done with our plates by the time they got their syrup. So, I can see reason to rate this place 3 stars (OK) instead of 4 (Good). Aside from the service issues mentioned above, I thought all of the staff we interacted with were polite and seemed to know what they were doing. You may want to skip this place if you're a POC. My good friends stopped here for brunch this past weekend right off the bat, they were greeted with a somewhat dismissive and unenthusiastic hostess, and they found this strange. A little bit of time passes and they were enjoying their mimosas and chilling, and as an older woman server was walking past my friend, she very clearly said the N-word slur right in her ear. Hard R and all, drive-by style. The woman was confronted by my friend and she of course now has her tail between her legs, claiming she doesn't know what she said to her that was disrespectful (I call bs). The server woman got all nervous and ran off somewhere for a few minutes, then later came back out and gave the most fake, insincere and embarrassing "apology" I'd ever seen. My friends also observed this dismissive and weird attitude that they experienced when they walked in was displayed towards any person of color that entered this place. Saturday seafood brunch at its best. A fun dinner/cafe on the main drag yet tucked away. We just beat the crowd, so come early. I had the spicy shrimp omelette. Amazing!
