I was a Naan N Curry disciple for a few years back in the aughts, so when it closed, I didn't really wonder about the Indian place that replaced it; I just went to Crepevine or walked west toward 9th Avenue. But the menu displayed outside the restaurant got me curious, so I finally gave it a try in February. The food is very good. It sure always smelled good from the sidewalk, but not only was it very flavorful, but the portion sizes were larger than I expected. I don't recall which two dishes I ordered, but they were both delicious, and I brought them and some of the garlic naan home with me, which should show you just how much food they give you. The service is excellent. I was expecting Naan N Curry's setup, in which you order at the counter, collect your silverware, cups, and water in the little closet room, and they bring your food to your table. That closet room is now one of their restrooms (which is very clean, by the way), and it's a sit-down restaurant with waiter service. There was a particularly annoying couple at the table closest to mine, and couldn't decide on which was more annoying: their ridiculous PDAs and baby talk, or the frankly absurd volume at which they were playing videos or TikToks or whatever on their phones for each other. My server could tell I was getting annoyed by them, and I believe he actually brought them their bill to get them to move along (they had finished eating right around when I ordered my food). It didn't really work, but I appreciated his effort. I need to try more things on the menu. My one big gripe is that the menu on the wall outside is different from the menu they hand you in the restaurant. The in-restaurant menu only has two biryanis, while the wall menu lists five biryanis. They need to harmonize the menus. Remember that 9th Avenue is more than 9th Avenue. Sunset Indian Cuisine is situated in the heart of dozens of restaurants. So many options, but I recommend this one. We went in for an early dinner, at about 4. We were instructed to sit anywhere, so we took a table by the window. We ordered vegetable pakora, and they brought it along with papadum! Complimentary papadum is an East Coast norm, but never out here. There was a third hot chutney, along with the standard tamarind and mint. The tamarind was definitely superior to most others, not as vinegary. The pakora tasted far better than they looked. The Wife ordered vegetable korma very mild, while I had vegetable biryani, medium. The biryani came with a generous amount of raita, which was thick like good tzatziki. I wish the biryani had cashews, but otherwise was very tasty. The korma used obviously fresh veggies, not frozen. I also got a glass of Chardonnay, a generous pour for only $7! We ended with pistachio kulfi and gulab jamun, and some masala tea. The kulfi was fabulous. They tried to give us our check early, when we still wanted dessert. When they came back with the check, it was missing the desserts, so I pointed that out. With everything, the total was $78.72. I still don't understand why City Indian restaurants are so much cheaper than out here in the East Bay. Most veggie entrees were $13-$15. Some cleaning would be helpful. The spherical light fixtures were pretty dusty on top, and the one above The Wife was falling apart a bit. read more

Came with kids on windy evening after stroll in Golden Gate Park, and decided to dine here in this sunset downtown having so many Nepali restaurants. We ordered the tandoori chicken, paneer chowmein and veg jhol momos and the food was very fresh , flavorful and specially the chowmein was super yummy. I ordered dinner from this place through DoorDash because of the high ratings on both Yelp and DoorDash. I was super disappointed when i got my order. I feel like it's hard to mess up dal tadka, which is lentils in cream or butter. I couldn't eat it because i felt like i was crunching on spices. It wasn't just peppercorn or large pieces that you can remove. It was small pieces that were mixed in that were hard, and physically hurt to chew. I had to throw out my whole order. TLDR - I was absolutely floored by this place. Will be back again for sure Right on Irving street, I had seen this place multiple times over the last two months walking in my neighborhood but never really thought to check it out. This weekend, I had some friends in town and I was showing them around. We happened to walk by Sunset Indian cuisine and it smelled incredible. After checking out some stores around the corner we decided to go back and it see what it was about. The restaurant itself is fairly quaint - lots of tables to seat groups of 2-4. We sat right by the front , and promptly had our order taken. For our meal we shared an order of veggie pakoras, chicken momos, an order of garlic naan, daal makhani, and lamb vindaloo. Prior to our order being dropped off, we were given some pappadums and chutney. All three chutneys provided were awesome. I particularly liked the red chutney. Everything came out promptly and fresh. Pakoras were crispy on the outside and fluffy/ light on the inside. The momos were a highlight for me and were served with a cumin lentil sauce. The lamb in the vindaloo sauce was very tender. To top off the excellent food, the price for this meal was super reasonable. Having Indian/ Nepalese this good so close by is definitely a treat. One week ago, I ordered lunch for 75 guests yesterday using ezCater. The ezCater system updated me when my order was submitted as well as when the restaurant accepted my order, which is just great when the entire transaction is online. The reason I chose Sunset Cuisine was because their offerings were able to accommodate a variety of dietary needs -- most notably vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free. Delivery arrived 10 minutes early, which was appreciated as my workplace is located in the Marin Headlands and it's ways to get lost, so it was nice that they took the time to come early in order to be on time. As for the food I ordered: - Chana masala, vegan and gluten free: So much flavor! - Vegetable coconut curry: Honestly the staff finished off this dish before I could even get a taste - Chilli chicken: good flavor but could have used more heat. I asked for medium spice but it was very mild. - Salmon curry: Wow, I absolutely loved this dish and would highly recommend - Three sauces were provided: tamarind, mint, and spicy sauce. Staff appreciated having the ability to add even more flavor to their meal! Thank you! I work at a facility where we were able to make our own rice because paying for rice just seemed too expensive. Been here 3 times this week. Despite being a late night restaurant, this place is on top of their service and the food comes promptly. Samosa chaat 8/10 A bit too sweet for me. Wish it were a little bit spicier Palak Paneer 10/10 Super delicious, exactly what I wanted. The cheese is cut in nice large chunks. Chicken Bryani 9/10 Chicken wasn't dry at all, rather perfectly cooked. Good flavor in the rice. Vegetable Bryani 9/19 I wasnt expecting the amount of vegetables that were packed in here. Eggplant, onions, carrots, and potatoes (which I thought was a bit odd) Himalayan Chicken Momo 10/10 Super flavorful and delicious. Came with 6, all for less than 15 dollars. The dumplings were perfect, didn't even need the delicious sauce that complimented them. While the ambiance isn't the most romantic, the orange walls and himalayan portraits make it somewhat comforting. Sometimes they play pleasant music but often it's silent. One unique aspect of this place is their robust alcohol selection, including a wide selection of large beers for around 5 dollars. I've been to Sunset Indian Cuisine after their renovations and I say it's pretty decent! I've tried their Lamb shank, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, lentil soup, and garlic naan. I would say I was let down by the butter chicken as they only included 4-5 small cubes of chicken breast in it. I was really shocked when I got it because I am paying almost $17 for a portion of butter chicken but only a small amount of chicken? Lentil soup was also decent, it didn't wow me but it wasn't bad. Their highlight for me was their lamb shank. It was super tender, flavorful, and didn't taste gamey. I would go here if I was craving lamb but I would skip the others. Both the Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Coconut Curry had strong, delicious seasoning, and the coconut curry had a nice, creamy texture. The proportion of meat to curry was appropriate, and we were both full with leftovers to take home for one more meal for one. Many of the Indian restaurants in this area have a diverse menu with quality dishes, and this manages to be one of them! Regular naan (5-star) was extraordinary: on a large tray, airy, thin, with beautifully-crisped edge. Exactly what a good naan should be. We sampled Hurricane Vege Momo (3-star, spicy level, deep fried): its dough was slightly thick. However, the sauce and vegetables that accompanied it was tasty. Spice level specification was quite accurate. Fish Vindaloo (4-star) : well-portioned with good-sized chunks of fried atlantic salmon, the curry is tomato-based and offered an excellent dip for the naan. I'm sorry to say the food here is beyond mediocre. I tried the garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, chicken tandoori and saag paneer. Each dish on its own was quite bland. Chicken tikka masala shouldn't taste this tasteless...I asked for medium spicy too. I also don't understand when such a pricy dish comes with just a few pieces of chicken - which were not tender at all. And the naan was skinny and disappointing. I'm a huge biryani fan when it comes to Indian food and I have tried biryanis from many places all over the Bay Area. Sunset Indian Cuisine biryanis in my book would be a 7 out 10. The rice or biryanis were rather too wet or too oily. Of the two biryanis, chicken was ordered with mild spicy and lamb with spicier than mild. Both tasted like not even a little spicy at all. Portion size was and ratio of meat to rice were good but taste wasn't exactly outstanding. Would I go back there? I don't believe I would for biryanis but perhaps for other curried and naan. read more

Sunset Indian is the newest contribution to the already very robust South Asian cuisine scene of the Inner Sunset. We already have our Indian food rhythm, but we got some food from here to augment our usual takeout order elsewhere (which, btw, we pair with champagne). We were glad we did. Thus far, we have thoroughly enjoyed the momos and garlic naan, the latter of which is crispier and more garlicky than the equivalent at many of its peer restaurants in the neighborhood. For me, the standout dish is the fish (salmon) tikka masala (ordered with extra spice). The fishiness of the salmon mixes beautifully with the bright, creamy sauce of the dish, yielding a wonderful experience that is exactly what I want when I seek out this dish (which I always do at any new South Asian joint). We will absolutely be back for this. We also ordered some of the Himalayan goat. This had a strong sauce with a flavor I can't quite place, but that did not play as well with the other things (more typical of gringo Indian) we ordered.
