And so I believe that there is nothing wrong with honoring people who fought and died valiantly and with honor. That's what this monument is about. Located in the middle of a two-lane traffic circle on Main Street in Franklin, this Confederate soldier, like many of these monuments, faces south with his back to the Union. He is "protected" by four cannon facing in each direction. And the caption reads that he was erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1899. It is a nice monument and a fitting tribute.

We got to meander through all the plantation grounds and saw the stables, winery and pastures where horses were raised but most interesting were the slave cabins which honored the many slaves the family had. Plaques, photos with stories attached and the history of slavery in the South were presented with great care. More than half the slaves stayed on the plantation after the Emancipation as employees rather than slaves. Belle Mead Mansion and grounds are well worth seeing. No photos or videos allowed inside the mansion though to help preserve the many original furnishings and furniture. The store you walk through to go into to start your tour is amazingly decorated with plenty of things you might want to purchase when you leave.

Carnton is an interesting historical spot. The property is well maintained with options for walking…read morethe property and/or touring the home. A small museum is in the Visitor's Center. A paved parking lot is available near the Visitor's Center. In that building you can buy tickets and tour the museum. The shop has some souvenirs as well as some packaged snacks and bottled water. Restrooms are nearby. Adult admission for the one hour house tour and grounds is $22 per person. Children under six are free. The museum was small, but worth looking at before heading off on the tour. The one hour home tour was interesting and offered plenty of opportunities to ask questions. The guide seemed knowledgeable and enjoyed answering questions.

Check out the website before visiting. It seems to be kept updated with closures, hours, and local events. And then... well, that's pretty much it. Athena herself is certainly impressive, although to my completely untrained eye she looked less like a Greek goddess and more like a giant Buddhist statue that had wandered into the wrong religion. I honestly wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. Bow? Pray? Light some incense? Take a selfie? I settled on staring at her for a few minutes and wondering where my $15 went. There was a little room showing how the sculptor made Athena, but I kept thinking there must be something more. Another exhibit. A secret passage. Something. Nope. Big Athena. Gold leaf. Thank you for coming. And perhaps my biggest question: Why is there a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Nashville in the first place? The folks there were super nice, greeted me when I entered and gave a brief introduction to the house before letting me roam free on the self-guided tour, but there simply wasn't as much of the mansion and original artifacts as I'd hoped. I enjoy touring historic mansions, but the Belmont mansion unfortunately left me wanting a bit more. Sometimes that's just what happens with historical locations that have been used over time.

We did almost everything ourselves. Set up, had catering brought in, cakes, bar; which was important. We wanted to have vendor options and this allowed us to do that. There is also plenty of parking. They let people park on the front lawn, as needed. Somehow, it went pretty flawlessly. At the time, the rental ran us just $800 for the day. Not bad for a wedding venue. I strongly suggest contacting them for an event. The space is really unique and easy to get to. We would definitely rent for another event in the future.

I opted not to trespass though you could park in front of the locked gate and explore. The marker reads, "Once five significant mounds marked the site of an ancient Indian village here. The mounds were between Little Harpeth River and a branch of the Boiling Spring. When the four burial mounds were excavated in 1895 and again in 1920 artifacts were found dating back to the Mississippian period of indian culture in Tennessee. Relics from the second excavation were placed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. The ceremonial mound by Boiling Spring Academy was left undisturbed."
