Strong mildew smell in the cottage that was really gross. Not great swimming spot. There was an ac so that was nice but the who ran this place - Donna I think her name is was really rude to some of our group. She said some really ignorant things for no reason. read more

I have been coming here with my family for many years and always have a wonderful experience. The owners are very attentive and are easy to reach with problems, without being over bearing. The cottages give a true "glamping" vibe that makes me feel both safe and comfortable. My two children really enjoy fishing off the dock and the fire pit at night. I look forward to coming back to Sunshine Cove each year and would highly recommend for anyone that is looking for a comfortable camping experience! read more

Where to start?! I've been renting cottages for 30 years, have a 5 star rating on ABNB and great relationships everywhere I've rented. Our family are all vaccinated and we are currently in the second phase of reopening Ontario. I'll summarize.. in my opinion the owner Susan should not own any business dealing with people. Do not stay here, stay anywhere else, or just stay home. That's how bad this owner Susan is! As MANY MANY other reviewers have stated, Susan was very friendly and nice UNTIL she got paid in full, then was argumentative and difficult. The web site says pet friendly, but after paying a deposit apparently "our cottage" was not pet friendly. Susan eventually agreed to let us bring the small dog, who was very very good, but then she complained that she could "see it walking around"....? The dog was never ever left unattended, didn't bark once and was only at the cottage for 2 days. The biggest issue; there was a family medical emergency and as a result my 8 yo step son (who lives in our household) had to be dropped off to stay with us at the cottage for the last few days. While being dropped off they were accosted and confronted in the parking lot by Susan, who verbally assaulted them, screaming at an 8 yo autistic boy that he was not welcome here, and he should get the $#%& off the property. She made him cry in the parking lot, then came tearing down to the cottage on her quad to confront me at the cottage to say that the "kid and your wife can get in the car and get the $#&% off the property" or she would call the police. I very calmly explained the situation and pointed out that he lives in our household and nowhere in her contract or rules did it say that people in our own household couldn't stay with us. She didn't care, didn't want to listen and I eventually offered to leave early with a partial refund to which she refused and drove off stating that "this isn't over". Never have I encountered such an unprofessional, disrespectful, uncaring, argumentative, confrontational business owner. Susan in my opinion doesn't like people, doesn't like pets, doesn't like kids, doesn't much seem to like her business, and just doesn't care. The resort itself is a little run down and needs an investment to bring the units up to date, but isn't that bad. Unfortunately as we all know, going to the cottage in the Summer is all about the experience, and Susan seems intent on ruining the experience for everyone. If that's not enough; - there is no beach as stated in their ads and web site - dogs are not actually welcome - children are not welcome - you can't park your car near your cottage, it has to be parked in the lot at the top of the hill by the office - not 420 friendly, which doesn't matter to us, but if you use it as medication for stress/anxiety etc you will not be able to use it here - they have a ramp but you are not allowed to launch your own boat they do it for you - there are no fire pits by the cottages, just one central one, which by the sounds of it people are not actually allowed to enjoy - they have a fish cleaning station but all cleaned fish must be kept in their freezer, you're now allowed to keep it in your cottage The only memories your family will make here are "remember that one place we stayed where the owner behaved so badly she ruined our vacation?" Note to Susan; your Waiver does not protect you against civil action for misrepresentation nor verbally assaulting adults / minors with profanity and threats. We left a day early anyway. read more

the cabin was very clean and the view from the deck was beautiful. The cabin had all kind of amenities and the boat we rented was almost like knew. BUT the owners were not very helpful. This was our first time to the area and we were given a very short rough drawing of the lake on a map as to where not to go. When my husband asked about the fishing the owner responded with there are fish there you have to know where to go. at no time did she offer any suggestions. I just felt that seeing she was in the hospitality industry perhaps she should work on her hospitality skills!!! read more

Love coming back year after year . The kids love playing. Husband used to come up 20 years ago and the only thing that had changed is owners and they have updated the cottages with a/c and tv . Still as amazing as it was when he was younger coming up here . Great family vacations . read more

What a terrible, horrible, no good experience. The owners were ignorant and gossiped about us to my visitor - told her I was a negligent father - she also asked my guest not to tell me what she said. My son was also hurt when the swing at the park broke. Nobody was around to help, so I emailed to let them know, but didn't get a response. When I sent a reply calling them out for gossiping about me, this is the reply I got: ---- My husband was made aware of the swing by either you or your lady friend and repaired it. The email then became a moot point. We're sorry if your son was momentarily "hurt", but he was seen running around, completely fine, mere moments after he fell off the swing. As for your "guest" .. all guests are to be registered. For the safety of everyone and their belongings, etc .. we, as all other resorts, insist on knowing who is here at all times. Guests must be approved and there is a fee. Your guest was here beyond the 8 pm cutoff time and left approx. 9:30 pm. Here is what is stated on our webpage as well as our brochures, etc.: VISITORS: Day visitors MUST REGISTER at the Office upon arrival. The rate for day visitors is $25/person/day. Day visitors are allowed on the property until 8:00 pm after which time the overnight charge will apply. Visitors are not permitted to bring pets. Management limits number of day visitors. There was no alternative but to speak to your guest when you and your companion simply LEFT and there was a stranger here with your two young boys who were rough housing and carrying on. We apologize for caring about their safety, especially around water and on the docks!! You were give two life jackets for the children, at no charge, which were never used once. After ten years and happy people, too numerous to mention, that return year after year .... one persons' negative opinion is not here nor there. Just because people do not get what they want, doesn't make their opinion true or valid. It takes all kinds. read more

We have stayed at many resorts on rice lAke and many cottages in general and must say this was the worst experience we have had. As other reviewers have stated Susan was very comfortational from the beginning, making you feel like your walking on egg shells. The cottage we had was infested with wasps when we got there, that were getting in from all the gaps in the walls. The pots under the sink had mouse poop in them. The "beach" is unuseable from the steep sloop to the weeds and rocks in the water. It was old and dirty. My friends had a renovated cottage which was in much better condition. The cottages are so close together you can basically touch your neighbours. As others have said about children, we were told at 8:30pm our kids should be in bed. Susan has no interest in the resort and it shows. I could list many many other issues.... read more

We spent the week at Sunshine Cove. It was perfect for us as 3 adults and 2 kids, 15,11. The kids fished off the dock daily catching many many fish including bass, perch, sunfish and more. The cabin was clean, comfortable and well stocked for our needs. We had a great week and have booked again for next year. We were wanting a place the kids would enjoy as well as the adults and we were not disappointed. Highly recommend for those who want the cottage experience. Owners are helpful, and accommodating. Thank you Susan and Randy! read more

I recently stayed there from August 12-18th in cottage 4. I want to let you know how my stay went since I could never find anyone in the office. Day 1 find out that my cabin door doesn't stay shut Find out that only half my BBQ lights therefore making impossible to cook in it. Go to cabin 3 to use their BBQ to smell shit.....literally. Right beside the BBQ is the sub pump No coffee pot Day 2 woken up by screaming kids from cottage behind us at 6:45. Startled me a wake so bad that I jumped and the old window fell on me. Found out my stove elements on the right don't work right. People from the cottage behind me under my cottage playing hide and seek Day 3 Woken up again by the cottage behind us at 7:00 Open the curtains to find they have pitched a tent right outside of my window. Went back and forth all day yo the office to find someone to help me. Day 4 Toilet is constantly back up whether it is pee or poo Cottage behind us wakes us up again. Slept with window shut but didn't help Kids and adults looking through my window while standing in the sand By the way that is not a sandy walk out beach Day 5 Woken up again sweaty from window closed and screaming neighbor kids Cook all our food now at cabin 8 because I couldn't stand the smell of poop Day 6 Woken up by neighbors again. Again back and forth to office but no one there. Left early more stressed and tired then when I got there.... Did not have a good time. Nothing was what it said on the website. Nothing worked in the cottages. Not a good way to do business. I also do not have a key as my cottage door did not even close or lock Sincerely disappointed Sent from my iPad read more

I have a wonderful time at Sunshine Cove year after year. My family loves the swimming, fishing, tubing, water skiing, boating - the lake is big. Sunshine's cottages and grounds are clean, the owners Randy and Susan have always been friendly to us and helpful. They have a big Fish Fry every week for the guests. It is potluck and everyone at the resort gets together and gets to know each other. We have made many friends from all over Canada and the US that come every year. It's like a reunion every summer. If you like fishing and water sports, it's the best place to be, so my family and I think. Five Thumbs Up!! read more

Spent 2 nights and 3 days at sunshine cove and was not impressed. The owner was watching over us every second of our vacation, we rented a boat for a day and when we weren't back by 8 pm, she called asking where we were and when we were coming back. My husband is from the area and has been to many cottages on rice lake and he recommends to spend your hard earned money elsewhere. read more

My Fiance's family had a reunion planned for this summer and decided to book a few cottages at this resort to reunite after 15 years of not seeing everyone together. We were sadly disappointed. Not only was the owner rude, aggressive and condescending to us all, she yelled at our Grandfather (who was paying for the whole thing!) for barely driving on the grass while doing a 3 point turn. She was angry we brought two dogs (even though we paid the 'dog-fees' and were pre-arranged with her) she said we could not use a large 10'x10' floaty we brought to use in the water and said we had way too many people in our group. Thankfully we had a family friend nearby who invited us over to use their property and waterfront so as not to upset the resort owner anymore. A calm conversation would have been better than the confrontational encounters. We will not be returning. read more

Cottages in poor shape. Property is very small and cabins are crammed on top of one another. No privacy. Owner with super strong attitude terrorizes her clients. She virtually breathes down your neck and follows your every step on the premises. In spite of saying otherwise over the phone, she will demand cash upfront once you have arrived and will still charge HST on top. Quote: "Pay all upfront, or get out!" From this moment on hell breaks loose; she will make rude personal remarks about you, will criticize you for things you do, will act as MNR officer and check on the fish you catch, will join your campfire uninvited with her booze and still go on about what you did wrong and what her rules are. We paid for our boat for the whole stay and they just took our boat from the dock 1 day before check out and dumped our fishing gear on the shore. We had a 2 year old with us and she still made us leave by 9 am- rather early check out, isn't it? It's just a snippet of what happened to us. We feel seriously abused by her. DO NOT STAY THERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Not even for free. It will be a horror vacation you will remember for lifetime. read more

We went to enjoy the water and the kids wouldn't swim with the weeds and rocks. So that was a big disappointment. The cabin had ac but it wasn't powerful enough to cool the place down. read more
