Pens, aesthetically pleasing items for desk organisation, numerous methods for filing, paper, notebooks, even some furniture including desks, chairs and filing cabinets. The staff were attentive and friendly; more than one offered to help me. I would venture to say that this store could fulfil any needs you may have just as well as the giant office supply chains can. I am not really in the market for any office items, but I was interested in their daily planners. I know most people have graduated from the paper version of these helpful tools, preferring the electronic mode provided by that occasionally frustrating piece of technology they call a smart phone. I still find actually writing things on paper with a pen the best way to organise myself, so I spent some time browsing their planners. They had a great range of these, from tiny ones in various shades of the rainbow that cost less than $5 to the more traditional large black variety. I like to put a great deal of thought into choosing my yearly planner, somehow linking it with how successful my year will be, so I didn't make a purchase but this shop is on my shortlist for providing me with this oh-so-important item for 2012.

Their diaries, calendars, stamps, clips and photo albums are products I associate with aspiring domestic goddesses, unrealistic, neat homes and housewives and house husbands obsessed with cleanliness. I walked past again a month later and they had pretty pink binders with polka dots, I curiously checked the price tag, and it was $39.95, a far cry from the $1 ring binders you can buy from Big W, but it wasn't over $100 so that was a step in the right direction I guess... there was a sale as well? I didn't end up buying the binder, I'm not too sure how I could justify the cost of a haircut to a cardboard binder with 3 metal rings. Choosing the cheapest frame (75x100mm), but with gallery quality glass and UV protection, it set us back around $400. For another, less precious, slightly smaller poster we had it done in the same frame without the special glass and it cost $220. The woman who works there was really lovely to deal with, had both jobs done on time and they look great. The Framer also doubles as a gallery and rumour has it there's a cafe coming soon too.

I also loved the cute, sketches on canvas by Cary Davies - all little family tableaux; the antique style mirrors; and most especially the paintings for sale by mainly local artists (keep your eye out for the Brisbane cityscapes done by Vanda Hudson). I only wished I had a family friend with a young daughter I could buy for. To top it off, the shop assistant was lovely, helpful and very enthusiastic about the products. So keep your eye out for a Smiggle shop during the next back to school sales and make someone the coolest kid in class.

K catering for the adults, Smiggle is a great place for you to get stationary for your kids in school, with cool telephone cord lanyards and eraser white outs. There is no kidding here, the person who created Smiggle was onto something, but my issue with this place is that it's good stuff, but I can't see myself buying any of it, even for my kids. Maybe i'm just not in that demographic. Prices are the same as if you would go to any stationary shop, and they have some cool pencil cases with lots of zippers too.

I know a few people who have used them, and it's the personal service that keeps customers returning. Only small, independent stores really have the time or inclination to compare 50 types of matt board and discuss the benefits of frame thickness in exhausting detail. You may pay a bit for their services, but if something is worth doing it's usually worth doing properly. This little local business is definitely worth supporting.

And that must mean something. Honestly, I'm not really big on picture frames. I have a blind spot when it comes to home decorating. Picture frames and me only ever come into contact whenever strictly necessary, e.g. when I can't think of what to give someone as a present. I suppose this has happened often enough for me to recognize a good picture frame deal when I see one, though, and the frames in the front window of Latrobe Art Space are ridiculously cheap for their quality, particularly given the store's Paddington location. Obviously the best deals are in the front window. Inside you can buy much more extravagant and larger frames, mirrors and paintings for very high prices. I imagine most of the clientele here are part of Paddington's richer crowd, because some of the frames look like they could only bear to live in mansions. Speaking of mansions, I do feel a bit like there's a slightly haughty quality to this store. I always feel like the shop assistant is watching me like I'm going to steal something. (It almost makes me want to do it.) There's also something vaguely creepy about the place - probably the silence inside and being surrounded by heavy dark furniture, Gothic frames and so many mirrors. It makes for a slightly "I'm in the final confrontation scene in some b-grade thriller" vibe. However, Latrobe Art Space's peers must be considered. Having seen what picture frames cost at art stores in Westfield shopping centres across Brisbane, the prices are insane. Smaller home ware stores seem to be a Picture Frame Rip-off Extravaganza, too. In a nutshell, if I were in the market for a decent or high-quality mirror, I'd definitely go here based on the price alone.
