I have been shopping at the Super C on St Jacques for years and it is my favorite grocery store in…read morethe area. This is a no frills grocery store so if you are looking for trendy or high end specialty goods, this isn't the place for you. The store is clean, selection is decent, and the prices, especially their weekly sales, are amazing. For instance, my teenage nephew loves CookiesnCream ice cream and it was on sale this week for $2.50 a carton so I bought him two. The regular price is around the $6.00 mark, per carton. Shopping here, I can afford to spend on specials treats because of the money I save on basic staples, something more affluent people may take for granted but I really appreciate.

I wasn't too impressed with the Canadian grocery chains I visited (including loblaws and maxi) but out of the three super C was by far the best one. The prices in these grocery stores were well above what we pay in the U.S. I found super C's prices a little lower and the selection was a little better. Their selection of products was not as wide in variety as I'm used to. For example, they only had about three different brands of peanut butter and no flavored ones. I ended up buying a spaghetti squash to take home and some mini ice cream cones. We also bought some frozen vegetables to heat up at the hotel for $3 and a carton of nestle ice cream since we don't have them in the U.S. (It sucked by the way). If you want to check out a Montreal grocery chain super C is it. Just be warned that they are nowhere near as fun and full of different products like in the U.S.

The Long Version: So I had heard that in 2018 Sobeys became a majority shareholder of the Asian grocery chain Kim Phat. Sobeys is the parent company of IGA. So I wasn't really surprised when I saw signage outside of this IGA that they have a small Kim Phat section in their store. I was curious to see what it looked like, so I had to go in to take a look. The section is small, but clearly labelled. Just look for the red lanterns hanging from the ceiling. They had a good selection of Asian snacks, but nothing too unique that I can't find back home in Ottawa, so I didn't buy anything. The rest of the grocery store is like other IGAs. This location is connected to the mall (Complexe Desjardins) but there's an entrance from the street as well. If you're looking for Asian items, you can find some here, but to be honest, this IGA is not far from Chinatown, so I would just go to Chinatown where there's more selection, but if for whatever reason you don't want to head down to Chinatown, this IGA will have some items. Metro Plus is a superior version of Metro. We needed to go there to buy some groceries…read more The good: very nice and looks modern. Food looks fresh. Lots of variety. Lines are short at cash registers as they have a good quantity of them open. Service at cash register is great. The bad: Fruits and vegetables are very expensive. Products in alley on special might be missing, so you have to look around the store to find them. Store is busy so you have to maneuver around other customers. The place looks great, and cash service is nice, but it is also expensive to shop here.

I would like to know whether Mr. Robert Collin is the owner of this Metro Plus Bellemare location,…read morewhat his role is exactly, and when he is actually present in the store. Recently, I experienced multiple issues with promotion tags that appeared to still be active on the shelves but were already expired at checkout. Customers select products based on these advertised prices, only to discover at payment that the pricing is incorrect. I spoke with a manager who introduced himself as "Jaque." His response was essentially that this has happened before and could happen again in the future, which suggests there is no real process improvement being implemented. What was most disappointing was the lack of concern shown toward the issue. He smiled, walked away, and did not appear interested in documenting the situation or taking any corrective action. I'm genuinely wondering how this can be considered good customer service or acceptable business practice. Unfortunately, I left the store with very little confidence that anything will improve.

The problems are mostly with those customers who refuse to wear masks and who ignore social distancing. One problem that has been persistent with this location is errors in scanner data. My last bill had a charge of $12 for 2 watermelons instead of $2 for the 2 cucumbers I actually bought. Funny how the errors are always in Maxi's favour... Ordinarily I check my bill, but in this lockdown I'm more motivated just to leave as fast as I can. I wrote Customer Service and am awaiting their reply to fix this error. So in conclusion, bring your own mask and wipes, keep an eye out for social distancing, and check your bill before you leave the store. But thanks to all the employees who are keeping the store open and pretty safe for customers; you are providing an essential service that we all appreciate. Stay safe!
