We strolled through Narbonne, enjoying the early spring, getting hungry. Even as early as March…read morepeople were crowding the outdoor seating areas of the restaurants by the Canal de la Robine. One seemed as good as the next, so we sat down in the Brasserie Le France. As usual in south of France the service was friendly, water and bread were brought together with the menu. All these simple things that make French restaurants so good. The traffic was dangerously close to our table and some idiot thought it was funny to honk right next to us. I had a pretty good herring and some salad but would have liked to choose my own dressing. My girlfriend's duck confit seemed tasty as well. The prices were reasonable. All in all it was a decent lunch. A restaurant like this in Dublin would deserve at least 4 stars. Comparing it to the amazing gourmet moments I had elsewhere in France a 3 seems fair.

The guys there do speak some English if that matters to you. The food: Was just a big "OK". The prawns were over cooked. Rubbery. The rice and veggies were basic, no big deal. My boo got the fish filet which was good. It came with fries, salad, Camembert, salmon lox (in addition to the white fish filet). So it was all over the place. We had a bottle of rosé which was OK. Not the restaurant's fault. Overall: Maybe we ordered the wrong items, everything coming out of the kitchen looked good. Then we got our food which was just OK for me. I'd definitely try somewhere else if you can but if you're in a pinch, it'll do.

My wife saw a non-descript café with a trio of guys smoking outside with an "ouvert" sign. Parking was a challenge but, when we walked a block up to the café, The proprietor greeted us with a smile and guided us through his bar room, down a step, and into a simple, nicely decorated dinning room with a display of relatively expensive wines and blackboards with wines organized by "color" with their prices per bottle and per glass and per pitcher. The luncheon patrons had already left; the only others were a Spanish family with children who were obviously observing their late lunch tradition. There was a salad bar of 8 different salads; four were with mayonnaise and the others were with tomato-based dressings. The 6 small portions that I served myself were very good - served slightly chilled. The proprietor offered us several choices for lunch. We each chose the same dish - sausage stuffed baby squid in tomato sauce. We knew the dish from other meals including a take-out from our village butcher. It's one of my favorite local dishes. I've never had it outside this region of France. The particular version was better than most that I have had because the sausage was a bit more spicy than the others and I found that very appealing. We drank a small pitcher of rose with sparkly water and declined some very nice-looking desserts. The bill was 36 euros. [ NOTE: There is no web page for this restaurant and no web-based review of it -- this is the first review and it's on Yelp. There are two other Le Continental entities in this town; one is a business and the other is a hotel.]

Most places in France close around 2 pm, and we didn't plan our lunch spot properly, so this was the only thing open. Pros: - In true American fashion, this is open all the time. - The food is edible and will fill you up. - You can get a variety of burgers, 3 types of salads, a few McFlurries, fries, and the standard rest of the McDonalds menu. - The outdoor area is quite large with a playground for kids, but does have lot of people smoking (this is after all, France) - You can order with the kiosks without having to talk to anyone. Cons: - Food is more expensive than McDonalds in America. We got 2 small salads that weren't even good, and a medium sized fries for 16,30€. - For "fast food" this wasn't super fast - we had to wait for a bit for our food (I thought salads would be faster to make) but our quick stop here ended up being 30 min. - Fries were kind of soggy, would not order these. I've had much better. - I thought the salads would be healthier but they ended up being not super fresh pieces of iceberg lettuce with 2 pieces of deep fried chicken on top and dressing from packets. It was "pretend healthy". I guess I should have asked if the chicken was deep fried or grilled, but I may have been better off getting a burger instead. All in all, not really a fan. Next time we'll plan better so we don't have to eat lunch at McDonalds. If you can, go somewhere else for a sandwich or a more proper meal.
