My sister recommended this place to me, it's a house that has been converted into a salon. At first I was skeptical, but when you go in you really wouldn't know you were in a house. It was a beautiful clean and modern salon! I had rung ahead and booked my appointment for a student which I believe was around $35! I got a wash and a cut, blow wave was extra but I felt I didn't need it. I had taken in a photograph of what I wanted and I was so pleased with the finished product. All throughout the cut the hairdresser was talking to me and continually asking questions to ensure she got everything right. I really couldn't believe that I had got this beautiful cut for only $35. On Tuesday's they do a children's special between 3-5pm which is a wash and cut for only $20! If you're under 17 you're classed a child which is ever better. They also offer services such as colour, highlight's, extensions and treatments. It really just takes that one step to be brave and try something new! Alan's Barber Shop is just off the main drag in Onehunga and is adorned with the stereotypical red white and blue stripes so it really feels like a barber's shop. The large glass window that doubles as a front door gives a plain view into the shop where you will find the owner Sahir and his apprentice working away at a queue of customers waiting patiently for a clip. Without fail I'm told you will be greeted with a friendly "Hey man, howsit?" from Sahir as you walk through the door before sitting down on the couch and relaxing to the 1960 /1970's music that is playing. When you finally get your turn (apparently the only downside is the typical 15/20min wait as they have so many customers) you start to understand why they always have a bit of a queue - the barbers really take their time cutting a customers hair and make sure they understand what they are looking for. They really seem to do all the little things well. My partner always goes on about what a perfectionist Sahir is, how tidy his cuts are and how you would be hard-pressed to find a better job for the very reasonable $20 charge. The hairdresser spent no time to work through and discuss what I had wanted for my hair. Stating that they could not work the picture style options I had given them. I had clearly stated I did not want anything tight and pulled back, but that is exactly what my hair looked like. Not once was I asked about how I wanted to work with my hair. I was so upset and left crying in the bathroom. My bridesmaids were poorly taken care of. Reporting to me that the hairdresser had slapped her hand when she asked about her hair falling out of place in the front. My other bridesmaid who was in the chair for less then 5 minutes to have a bow clip placed in her hair and charged $30. They were left with limp curls and messy plaits which did not hold for the day, falling out before we even left for the wedding ceramony. After frequenting the salon previously for similar services and always being happy with the result I was tremendously disgruntled on my wedding day. I would not be recommending Zurri Ellerslie salons services to anyone. I was very upset at how the morning was handled in the salon.

That being said however, you definitely pay for what you get - I don't really remember a time where I left Servilles unhappy with my haircut, apart from maybe a few times when they cut my fringe a tad short. All of the staff here are really well trained and I always feel safe with my locks in their hands. They all have a great sense of style as well, so you can rest assured knowing that they won't accidentally give you a tacky hair cut that they claim to be the latest 'trend'.
