This place offers everything needed to perfect my ballroom dancing. Diary I had a fabulous teacher. I went to class each week where I learned new steps. I then had any questions I had with my teacher during private lessons. Next I attended the parties held every Friday night where I had the chance to practice what I had learned in class. SuperShag brought in guess teacher where I could get a different perspective of my dance technique. Overall, they offered what I was looking for. This place is amazing! I have danced at SuperShag for 8 years and have always gotten my money's worth. The upbeat personalities of the instructors and staff really make this a great place to be. I started with my college team and have now performed in several showcases and competed through the studio. At twenty bucks for a drop-in "pole fitness" class, I don't feel that I got my money's worth (and this was with $5 discount for our Yelp Workout group). We had been assured by Andy, the owner of the studio, that we'd be getting a cardio-based workout, so I came into class expecting to sweat. While my arms were somewhat sore the next day from grabbing onto the pole, I was disappointed that I didn't break a sweat at all. The class started off with a few minutes of stretches and warm-ups and then we learned some basic "pole work." This involved learning how to walk around the pole, shimmying sexily down the pole, and launching into "the chair." This last move requires you to hold onto the pole and slide down gracefully with your feet held up. Being the uncoordinated klutz that I am, I couldn't master "the chair" and thus was unable to move onto the next move, which involved falling backwards (again, gracefully) onto the floor. I wish our instructor, Danielle, had been more pointed in correcting our errors, as it was clear that a couple of us had trouble with our technique. However, I do understand that because the class was large, it was probably more difficult for the instructor to keep tabs on all of us--especially since it was a drop-in and not a private class. As Jessika D. suggested, I think that if they limited the class size so that each student had a pole, it would've been a more beneficial experience. In our class, there were 2-3 students per pole and taking turns does cut down on your practice time quite a bit. Overall, I would only recommend the beginner's pole fitness class if you were curious to learn about the art of pole dancing and not looking for an actual workout. It's also probably a great time if you book a private session for your close girlfriends. Just don't expect to get much personalized instruction in the regular drop-in class. As for the dance studio itself, the facilities are very nice and I didn't have trouble finding street parking. I might consider coming back again for a different dance lesson but I can't say that this one session left a very good first impression on me. However, this is not to say that everyone had a bad time. In fact, my "pole partner," whom I did not know prior to this class, signed up for a package of beginner's pole classes after our session was over. But then again, she also managed to get the hang of "the chair" (no pun intended), so maybe that's what sealed the deal for her. To each her own, I say. read more

I have been taking classes here every week for over a year. I love it!!! I think that some people think that it will be really easy and you will be doing tons of tricks and spins in your first class, that is just not how it is (although you will do some). It takes an incredible amount of strength which i had to build up over months and continue to build. I think people can get a lot out of the classes even if they only come a few times, but will really appreciate the work out if they stick with it and come on a consistent basis. I have never been so strong or have had so much confidence with my body, and I owe most of that to Pole fitness. The the ballroom lessons I take at Super Shag during the week have helped me a lot too. I love a challenge, and pole fitness is perfect for me, it is one of the most physically challenging things I have ever done, but is by far the most rewarding. The Instructors at Super Shag have been there helping me at every step of the way. I am not the most flexible or graceful person but with all the help and support from them I can do things now that I never thought were possible for me. I recommend pole fitness to all of my friends and even bring in some of them to the open pole on Fridays so they can try it. read more

I love this place! Both Patty and Danielle are great teachers, and amazing dancers. Just finished beginner II and can't wait for the next level. In both 4-week sessions I had my own pole for each class, in fact, first class of beginner II I was the only girl in class, so I got a private lesson! I went to one drop-in class to practice, and I really liked it. I would show up every Friday, but it doesn't work well with my schedule. It's 2 hours, so it gives you plenty of time to practice. Each class is an hour, first half an hour is a warm-up and stretches, then 30 minutes of pole dancing. I couldn't move my arms after the first class, but now I've built up strength and feel much better. It's not as cardio intense as a step class, but you definitely break a sweat, have to catch your breath after a routine, and can feel your muscles the next day. P.S.: I can't believe people are complaining about $20, really? And yes, it's barefoot read more

I don't know what the fuss in the other reviews is all about -- I like this place. I did a drop-in pole fitness class before signing up for the full-length four week class; I'm on my second full-length session now. I only went with one friend, and the class was reasonably sized. Yeah, the drop-in class is a little on the weak side, but I think part of that is because pole dancing requires a LOT of strength and also comfort with swinging your body around the pole; you just aren't going to be able do all the flashy spins and climbing and inversion on your first try. That said, I REALLY disagree with a previous reviewers' assessment of their emphasis on being "sexy." This is a good studio that's straightforward, run by professional dancers, and avoids the "stripper taint." I like that there are no feather boas or stiletto heels, and that the instructors minimize the time they spend on teaching us how to "sexy dance" -- actually, "sexy" isn't a word that gets brought up much at all. A+++ for this; the lack of "sexy stripper dancing" definitely made me choose Super Shag over other studios. They do provide some individualized attention. The only downside to this place: if you want to "drop in" and work on your moves with some unstructured practice time, it costs as much as regular class time. I think they should give discounts to people who are already taking the full-length class, because it sucks to have to pay twice just to be able to practice what you've already learned. read more

At least two of us were assured we wouldn't focus on a stripper routine, but more of a cardio workout. That we would barely even be using the pole. Yeah that didn't happen. First, we walked in while another class was going on. It ran late and they were rushed out with no cool down and we were rushed in. We did a quick warm up, that didn't even get me loose...no pun intended....I learned how to be sexy, how to shimmy, how to walk around the pole, how to bend down holding the pole, how to freestyle around the pole, How to twirl around it doing the "chair", how to lean backwards and snake around the pole -than land on my back-than roll over on my stomach while kicking my legs- than flipping up my hair and making sure I get up real sexy. For $20. For not even an hour. For REAL. Our instructor barely paid attention to us..I am thinking because we didn't have aspirations to be a stripper. She was more concerned with a few other girls outside our group...they had taken the class the week before. Though she WAS concerned we would be able to acclimate our routine to one done in heels, she could care less if we were doing the moves correctly. She didn't check on us and we all realized WE had to ask her to come over and help us. Tracey and I figured out most of the moves on our own. Oh wait. That is another thing. Two and three girls to a pole...that doesn't sound right to me. Each girl taking turns on a pole not even for 45 minutes does NOT =$20. That was the DISCOUNTED price. It also does NOT = a fitness workout. They only thing I could show to prove I took this class (besides my credit card receipt), was pole burn on my right arm. I feel really duped that we were told something false...especially since someone from the studio was on the thread and knew our reservations about the class not being "cardio enough" or hoping it was more than just a "stripper routine twirling around a pole. I didn't even break a sweat. Now THAT is saying A LOT!. I wish they put as much effort into their class as they do their defensive posts! I'm not down for that. Maybe if they spent more time on classes instead of policing yelp, it would have been worthwhile. B.Y.W.C is to get us motivated to get into shape and get our asses on track...not to go work at the Golden Banana. P.S They now get a star deducted..... ...the combo of too many girls **even their website caps the class off at 11 people**, lack of instruction and cardio aspect, plus employee response-has left me with a sour taste.shay ay ay dy. DAnielle states in her review that if we wanted more of a cardio workout, we should have taken the aerobics class. Why weren't we told that before?? We are told afterwards??? Especially when they knew beforehand that is what we wanted! She is also making it sound like they did us a favor by letting a group drop in. NO. We each had to call and pre-register if we wanted to partake. They do this drop-in class every weekend. This was not "special" for yelp as they made it out to be. There wasn't a set # of yelp girls dropping in. It was more of a "if you want to take the class, hurry and register because there are only a few spots." The minimum to a class is two and it should cap off at 11 (per their website)...That did NOT happen. One good thing, there is plenty of parking. When I worked in the C.N.Y I could never find any by the time I got there and always had to take the shuttle! read more

Pole Fitness Class 1. $20 to me is pretty expensive especially for not breaking a sweat. I think that this class would have been a lot of fun if what you are looking for is a light dance class, but we were told it would be a cardio-based workout with the pole. For this price I also think that the class should have been a little longer. The class was only an hour and usually with most fitness classes that I have taken they are around $10 for an hour. 2. Also when I talked to Andy on the phone I was trying to get a feel of what we should wear. He said that most girls are barefoot during the class or they wear dance shoes, not socks since it would be too slippery. I, thankfully, didn't follow his advice and did bring socks. Neither the class before us nor our class was barefoot. Every girl had socks on and yes it was slightly slippery but it was better than the alternative, barefoot. I tried to do go barefoot and quickly put my socks back on. There is no way that you could move barefoot. It's just not possible, not only would you have left the class with pole burn but also wooden floor burn. 3. I agree with everyone else that it should be one girl, one pole. I wasn't able to do the chair but having to switch off with someone else didn't really help me learn the method any faster. 4. I wish that our instructor would have corrected us more and this probably would have been possible if the class was smaller. 5. I think that there should be some type of locker room or locker area so that people can lock up their wallets. I have had my things stolen from me before so maybe I'm a little paranoid but I don't really like having my things so close to the door. Granted I know that you can kind of watch your things from the dance floor but at the same time if you are caught up in the class you might just lose track of who comes through that door. 6. I also agree with Jessika that I don't think that we should have to give our credit card number in order to reserve our spot. There were only four girls who weren't with our group. I really think that Supershag would be a great place to hold a party since it's a large open space. Parking wasn't a problem. They had an entire street of free spots and tons of meters with a 2 hour limit. Bathrooms: They were so clean that I was in there even without my shoes! We went here for a choreographed first dance for our wedding and it was so much fun! Amy created a dance that was fun and helped to show our personalitiies. It was a nice touch to our wedding. My husband and I took private lessons to learn a dance for the first song at our wedding. We signed up for a series of 5 classes, twice (we needed the extra classes). The introductory lesson was free and we got to meet our instructor, learn a few steps, and get a feel for everything before deciding to purchase the lesson package. Our instructor, Alfredo, was great! My husband is not the dancing type, and I love to shake my booty on the dance floor. Alfredo worked with us to create a dance that we both felt comfortable with. He was able to teach us a really hard dance too, the Viannese Waltz. I thought Alfredo's teaching style was great. He was professional and patient. I am very pleased with our entire experience with SuperShag Dance Studio. The lessons really paid off because we wowed everyone with our first dance, which to me, is something you can't put a price on. read more

I am going to begin my 3rd session of pole dancing classes this Saturday, and i am super excited! I am a professional dancer, all though my expertise consists of ballet and jazz, I am becoming more and more in love with pole dancing. I take approximately 5 to 7 different dance classes a week, in several different studio's around Boston and Cambridge. The class I take at Supershag is by far the funnest, and the most challenging. I read some of the other reviews and I was surprised to read that some did not just want to "twirl around the pole". "twirling around the pole" is hard work. So is climbing the pole and dancing around it. I am not quite sure why anyone would take a pole dancing class if they did not want to interact with the pole? As far as a work out goes, i wake up every Sunday morning sore, and feeling great! Last Saturday I was left on the floor at the end of class, because I was so tired and sweaty. I think Danielle is a really good teacher. Being a dance teacher myself I feel as if I should defend Danielle, because there is only so much instruction you can give someone before that person has to just go for it, and maybe if they are not getting it down then they should try harder. Quitters never prosper and most the negative reviews have been by people who did the drop in class once. I will admit that the first class is not the funnest but just like any other form of dance you have to learn the basics, and usually the basics don't consist of grueling cardio. I will however agree that when a class is too large, the class does suffer some. All in all I love Pole Dancing at Supershag! read more

Having been a regular here for some time now I didn't think I could get better results than the ones I had, but those few remaining inches of fat around my waist are starting to disappear. Yay, Supershag! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! 3/24/2011 Well, it just goes to show that everyone is different. I've been taking pole lessons for a year now, at various studios, and won't give up my Sundays and Fridays with Supershag if you paid me to. I guess it has to do with expectations. As an advanced student, I've recently revisited the beginner routine in order to work on spins and turns and had some of the girls reteach it to me. Doing it over and over again with them them, I most definitely worked up a sweat (and I do an hour of Cardio at the gym every morning). I guess what you put into your workout determines what you get out of it. No doubt I was surprised that such a simple routine would work up a sweat, but it did! And it was helpful for me to revisit the basics because, as I observe the champs, I see that the best ones use the simple turns a great deal. As far as sharing a pole, I've had to share a pole often on Friday night open pole. I've found this enormously helpful since I put so much into whatever I do that I usually need the break that I get when the other girl takes her turn. The best thing for me about sharing a pole is the comraderie that comes with it! I have made some of my favorite new friends while sharing a pole with another girl as we help and get to know each other. I've gotten so I won't plan anything before 9pm on Fridays because I don't want to miss working with the other regulars or meeting one of the newbies. As far as the attention I get from the instructors, I'd say it's adequate. Again, I suppose it comes down to expectations. In class my instructor goes over the new move with everyone and then goes to spot each girl as she tries it. I'm a very independent person, so that's even more attention than I want since I like to make my mistakes when no one is watching. But, that's my own silly thang.I do think the warmups could improve and appreciate that my instructor gives us an additional 5 minutes to do whatever else we feel we need to do before we begin. I also would like to see the classes go longer, but have to admit that an hour class on Sunday is about all I can handle after the two-hour open pole on Friday nights.I've taken lessons at other studios in Boston and in other cities and some 1-hour classes have been more intensive than other longer classes, so I don't think the length of time determines the kind of workout you get. I've also seen people hurt themselves by going longer than they should have, so, i would be wary of classes that go too long. I think I've enjoyed every class I take because I make sure that I walk away with something, even if that something is nothing more than a challenge to get a move at open pole that I couldn't get in class. It is frustrating, no doubt, to watch everyone else get a move so easily while you struggle, but I've learned that everyone is different and what seems so easy for someone else can be difficult for me. And this changes week to week! There are days when the move that I got easily one day challenge me for weeks afterward. The key is to manage expectations and keep trying. I love my time at Supershag and am sorry that anyone else out there feels differently. the instructors at this studio focus on every students individual ability and build teamwork. you are as strong as the weakest teammate. I have been taking classes there for months and every class moves at a different pace depending on everyone in the class. I can't believe some of the comments on here from girls who have taken one class or maybe one 4 week session. If you put as much time and energy into working out maybe you would be strong enough to actually get the moves so everyone could move on. sounds like the only exercise you get is by running your mouth and jumping to conclusions. as far as the comments on being too sexy- it's a pole dancing class, hello! you want to be sexy. my suggestion is, stick with it and ride it out. yes, you start off with walking around the pole but that in and of itself has a technique. read more

Pole fitness! Seriously. Practice yoga + pole fitness and you will love your body. Both Danielle and Patty are great instructors, and I've had the pleasure of getting to know them through my regular classes and the drop in open-pole session on Friday nights. The most important thing about pole fitness is that you have to keep practicing - no matter where you go! Yes beginners classes will be full because 1) this sh*t is hot and 2) everyone wants to try. I started more than a year ago, I remember I occasionally had to double up, but when you're just starting it's not like you're going to have the arm strength to hang on and spin around for an hour straight anyway. But heed my advice: the more you stick with it, you build strength and more importantly comfort and muscle memory. Not to mention the more fun you have explaining away your ridiculous bruises. After a year or so of weekly practice, I'm in an Intermediate Level II class with only 5 other people - there are more than enough poles and we get tons of individual attention. I've been taking ballroom lessons at Supershag for 5 months. Signed up on a whim thinking I'd bail when it got too chilly to sit outside on the boat to Charlestown... I'm still going. I love it. The atmosphere is laid back and there's a wide range of students from the likes of me (zero natural talent) to flashy, competitive types and all ages. You can save a few bucks buying lessons in packages but there's no required long-term contract beyond the obligatory "I understand this is a physical activity and I could hurt myself" signature. read more

I took pole classes here a couple of years ago, so perhaps things have changed. I thought Danielle was a great instructor, but the classes were too crowded and there weren't enough poles for every student to have their own. An hour was also a bit too short--especially since you had to share a pole. Class size really is everything when you're doing pole work. I never felt as if I got a true workout, nor did i learn what I was looking to learn. read more

My wife and I came here to practice and choreograph our first dance. Amy was a good teacher, she made classes fun and entertaining and we felt very comfortable with our dance by the end. However, the private lessons are not worth the hefty price tag. Lessons typically ended 15-20 minutes earlier than the 45-60 minutes we paid for. In addition, Amy had us reschedule several classes around her schedule, which we were happy to do, but which she failed to return when the time came and her refusal was rather rude and not at all an attempt to come to an understanding. read more

The first thing I need to say is that after reading over some of the reviews posted from a few years ago, a LOT has changed since then. I have been going here for classes for the last few months and have really enjoyed what I have been able to accomplish. The class sizes are determined by the number of poles in the studio, so there is no pole sharing, which is important. They also no longer have 4-week session as some older reviews mentioned. You can buy packages of classes to reduce the price per class, but each class has its own individual sign up, so you can attend only the classes that work for your schedule and not worry about missing out on classes you spent money on. All that being said, the part about the studio that really stands out to me are the fabulous instructors. Danielle and Patti are both phenomenally talented and knowledgeable. They both do a wonderful job of breaking down moves into parts, or finding modified ways to build up the strength working up to a certain move. There is a parking garage or metered parking on the street which is less than ideal, but Danielle and Patti are well worth a 5 minute parking spot search. And usually, finding a metered space isn't a problem, its remember to bring enough quarters with me! This is a type of exercise class I honestly never saw myself doing once, let along twice (and sometimes three times) a week. But now that I have gotten started, its really such a great workout and LOTS of fun! read more

I am not a huge fan of exercise but I gave this pole dancing thing a go about a year ago and have been hooked ever since. Danielle is always pushing us to the next level and I get complements on my arms whenever I go sleeveless. At first it was just fun, but now it is a challenge with a room full of comrades. Let me preface this with.. I haven't not even been to the Studio yet. I booked a party with them for a friend. The date had to be changed and I was assuming with it being a " mega plex " it would not be a problem. Since I have been in customer service for years and I know the golden rule of 1 bad experience the customer tells 10+ people, 1 good experience most times is not relayed. I figured they would at least try to accommodate my small request since it was it was two weeks before the party. No I was completely wrong. After spending a half hour pleading my case to Andy " the fun monitor " nothing had changed it had only made me hate this place; and I have not even gone yet. The girl who it was for is pissed and it takes away from her special day. The customer is always right, and at least an attempt is made to fix the problem, however not in this case. Therefore I am making my first yelp review, and I hate to say it but go to another studio for your pole dancing parties where you are valued and accommodated. Oh and make sure you get all your fine print info so they don't try to screw you out of a deposit. They will not try to make you happy! read more

I really loved taking my poll fitness classes here, and am excited to continue here. I had Patti as a teacher, and she was great! The facility is awesome. This really does work your upper body out, and once you perform the entire routine you will be sweating! I will recommend this place to my friends because I think its a fun and unique way to work out. I may be a little biased because I haven't taken any other pole fitness classes, however, I've taken many dance classes and have seen one other pole fitness studio. I got involved through a LivingSocial deal which was for a four-week Beginner 1 class. I must say, while very skeptical of my own abilities and definitely my confidence, it has been a very positive experience overall. I'm not the most physically gifted or flexible individual and am slow to learn, but I've advanced and I am now in the midst of a four-week Beginner-II class. I work out on a regular basis on my own and find myself sore after every pole session. The warm up is a good balance of yoga, dance, and stretching exercises which are integrated later on. I've taken classes with both Danielle and Patti, both are easy to follow, instill confidence in each member of the group and love what they are doing. It's a fun experience which is teaching me to love my body and use it in ways I never thought I would. The ambiance is amazing: lights, music, gets you in the mood. I read other reviews and I believe they took the critiques seriously. Everyone now has their own pole so you are not sharing, at least in the weekly courses. I haven't gone to an open pole session yet, so I don't know if there's sharing involved. I've never felt silly for asking questions or for not being able to do something, yet.
