Domaine de la Broquiere - Outside on the patio... Beautiful, but surrounded by yellowjackets.

First of all, Do not be fooled by the website. It looks lovely, they did a very good job. This…read morewas why i choose it in the first place. Out of the 4 bed and breakfasts we stayed in France, this was the most disappointing. First- We got lost, the guy wouldnt help us get to his place( Our first time driving in France without a good map and this place is a bit out of the way). We were close to him about 15 minute drive and he still wouldn't meet us to make it easier to follow him back. Second- we roll up to this place, it looks beautiful, but is tainted by the fact that the owner does not show us around. It was so odd. He just showed us to our room. No, hey this is how this works, this is the common area, this is what time breakfast is, here is some info about some restaurants, yada yada.... Nothing! and he spoke English! We felt like we had just crashed a party at someones house. Very uninvited. Third- I signed up for a table du hotes and he told me it was unavailable until Monday (this was Saturday) even though he was cooking for others that evening. Fourth- our room was TINY. I know. I know in France the rooms are small, but that is mostly in Paris, this was place so little you couldn't move, and you could hear EVERYTHING through the walls. romantic? No way, We were afraid to cough. Six- Their was a beautiful commonroom, but we had no idea if we could go into it, They wouldnt tell us. Then we we asked a question it was like we were putting them off. There was no fridge for use, so all of our stuff from the markets for our picnics were going bad. I asked to use their fridge and they said no, having later saying they misunderstood us. Seven- On sunday everything shuts down in France. good luck finding food, well we didnt know this, so you would think if your customer was asking where to eat on a Sunday, you would warn them that nothing would be open. No way, we were starving, we had to eat a pizza on the street corner. Very frustrating. Eight- breakfast was not that great.. Just bread and jam and figs. There were also yellowjackets swarming everywhere around us. Nine- not the best location for visiting the Riviera. I would have stayed near St Maxime or Hyeres. Oh!! last but not least. you have to do a wire transfer to put down a payment for this place- it costs you at least 40 bucks to send it through then when i checked out, he said he only recieved half of it.... Shady... Don't go here. I wish their website wasn't so pretty.

By far our favorite hotel throughout our two week vacation in France. Le Dortoir is located in…read morecentral Nice, next to lively restaurants, shopping, and a short five minute walk to the beach. I booked directly on the Le Dortoir website which guaranteed the best rates. If you book directly with them, reminder to be aware of conversation rates and foreign transaction fees since they do not have the option to book in USD. When we arrived, our room was ready and we were promptly greeted by their staff who also helped carry our luggage with us to the second floor. I believe Le Dortoir has their rooms on the second, third, and fourth floor of the building but you have to climb three sets of stairs to get to the second floor since the ground floor starts on floor 0. There is no elevator which is probably the only con. The rooms are just as pictured. Super modern, clean, and spacious. We loved the hardwood floors, rain shower, and natural lighting which came in from three large windows that spanned the entire side of the room. We booked a room with a balcony which we highly recommend as that was probably our favorite part of the room. Located in a bustling area of Nice, the balcony overlooked the town center and provided a fun area to relax, unwind, and people-watch after a long day of exploring Nice. The room includes a mini fridge, Nespresso machine and wine opener/drinking glasses. The only strange thing was that housekeeping came into our room even when we had the "Do not disturb" sign on. We thought we had forgotten to put the sign up the first day, but even after checking the second and third day, they continued to come in. We had no issues with our stuff and didn't feel the need to make a compliant but we did think that was a bit strange. They have staff in their office located on the "ground floor" (one set of stairs from the entrance) during working hours if you have questions during your stay. Overall, we had a wonderful stay here and would definitely come back next time we are in Nice.
