SURF CITY SMASH BURGER
Pat M.

Unfortunately I have to give this place 3 stars. The tiki atmosphere is cool and the food was pretty good overall, but there were a few things that missed for me. We ordered 4 drinks and 3 of them were extremely strong to the point where they were basically just tequila on the rocks. One of the drinks was actually really good, so it seemed inconsistent more than anything. The food itself tasted good and the bowls were more unique than the typical hawaiian options in the area, but the portions were relatively small for the price. The waitress was super nice though and definitely made the experience better. Compared to Undertow nearby, this place just doesn't quite reach the same level in my opinion.

Pork belly fried rice

Ugh I really wanted to like this place. We had friends tell us it was good but we were so disappointed. The pork belly and beef tasted like it was reheated. It was dry and tough. The food was cold, The spam musubi was NOT spam musubi. It was a pretend musubi taco. The prices are crazy expensive for being food that tasted reheated. My drink never came out so I ended up canceling it. The waitress was nice but rarely came out to check on us. Honestly it was better when it was a cute sandwich shop. We won't be back

Oh man! What a gem! What turned into a random date night...turned into a fantastic Tiki Tuesday date night! They offer a great happy hour selection with a plethora of appetizers and classic tiki cocktails on HH. What sets this tiki bar apart from UnderTow is the food. Omg the food was delicious. We ordered the spam musubi--honestly the best food item we ordered. It was soooooo yummy! Perfect amount for 2 people...we wanted more! The fiancé ordered the Loco Moco--he said it was good but a tad bit salty. I ordered the kimchi fried rice--it was really good but I was left feeling like it was missing something spice wise. We both plan on coming back and trying more food items so TBD. The cocktails.... They were everything and more from a tiki cocktail you would expect. I love the homage to the classics and I am not talking the 3 big heavy hitters (Mai tai, pain killer, hurricane) they had the Scorpion and the 3 Dots and Dash (my personal favorite) among a few more. I tried their SkallyWag because I am a bourbon snob--it was so good! We also ordered the Lotus (a strong sipper), Hurricane, Ali' i Nui, Blue Hawaii, and 3 Dots and Dash. All amazing! We have been to Strong Water, UnderTow, and Tropic Thunder--this place holds its own when it comes to cocktails. The vibe, ambiance, and the music all come together for a relaxing vacation feel...even on a random Tuesday night. The service was great. The GM even came by to introduce himself. Great experience overall! We will be back for sure! Come check this place out!

Very authentic Hawaiian fare. Great staff, service, atmosphere and food. Very well organized selection of appetizers, drinks and food. The general manager Chris introduced himself as well as several staff and our waitress Lauren Definitely a place to tryout and enjoy the relaxed vibes. We will definitely be back!

Nice atmosphere, nice people working the bar and other employees around. I ordered the Pork Belly Bahn Mi, Island Agave drink, Church Music pint and house tequila. It was all good and I did enjoy the experience. However, when the bill came it was $60.00 including the tip. While good food, service, and atmosphere is key to a good experience, the price point is a bit high for what was ordered. Maybe I'll give the place another chance and go at Happy hour.

Hurricane....half gone. Delicious.

Stopped in for happy hour. Drinks were delicious. Painkiller was my fave. Coconut shrimp was very good...was wishing I had more of the pineapple jam. Wings are huge and tender and a little spicy and delicious! We also shared a Big Kahuna Bowl with rice, beef bulgogi, edamame, cucumber, picked ginger, crunch onions, honey wasabi and spicy mayo. Added little soy sauce. It was amazing! Bartender was so helpful.

What an amazing atmosphere SCTH has sculpted! From the incredible decor/ambiance, the phenomenal and knowledgeable service, to of course the amazing food and drinks! Surf City Sandwich Shop was already one of our favorite spots to enjoy yummy food in a welcoming atmosphere. Now, Surf City Tiki Hut is establishing itself as one of our favorite DATE NIGHT/DAY spots! I am gluten-free, and the server was so helpful and determined to help me find something new and yummy, aside from an always delicious sandwich. We opted for the Big Kahuna bowl with Black Cod, and it did not disappoint!  I loved that there were also GF/DF options for dessert (yummm, gelato :)!  Thank you, Surf City Tiki Hut, for a great place to visit and escape, ANY TIME of the week! We look forward to visiting MANY more times!

The food is really good every time, but we had a bad experience with customer service. After ordering directly from their website using Toast one of our orders did not arrive with the delivery. When I made a comment to the Toast email regarding this I received the message to call the store directly. The first person I talked to wanted to help but she didn't really know how. She went to talk to a manager or something but didn't mute the phone. He said we were probably lying about the missing item anyway and that we had to contact door dash. He then got on the phone and told me he didn't know what toast was even though it's linked to their company website. All this to say, they refunded me but dang dude it was such a bad customer service encounter.

I go here a lot!! The ambiance is amazing and so are the sandwiches, kahuna bowls, loco moco, and pupus! The decor has heavy mid-century tiki exoticism/escapism sources but also with strong Hawaiiana and surf flair. It's full of original art by current tiki revival artists and OG pieces from decades past. The staff is so friendly! There is a beautiful bar area with a tiki bar program that has provenance - but I don't drink. For me, this is a restaurant (with a bar) and it's classy, fun, and family-friendly. I mean it's not a mainly-bar with lousy bar food. Bar-only patrons seem very pleased as well (I know many who enjoy it). I've seen a lot of kids here and brought my grandson. Pupus are a great deal during happy hour. I also saw they're having some live music this weekend. Patio is comfortable too with commercial misters keeping it cool. Highly recommend - as I said I go here a lot!!

We brought our own tiki mugs and ordered Mai tais. They have tiki drinks in mugs you can buy.
Cheryl A.

The cocktails are so good! If you know tiki drinks, you know... they are rightfully strong and adventurous. Don't come in expecting syrupy, grenadine infused, corporate cocktails. The food is good too! Their Hawaiian wings with Korean bbq sauce can stand up to any Korean restaurant! Get them!!! My hubs orders coconut shrimp every time he sees them - these rank up there with some of the best we've had - great coconut flavor in the batter, not just pieces of coconut. The potstickers and dipping sauce were tasty and cooked perfectly. My son said the smash burger is better than most he's tried. The servers and bartenders are super-friendly and seem knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We'll be back to keep working thru the cocktail and food menu! Nice to have a tiki bar with good food.

This place has had a serious glow-up -- and I mean that in the best possible way. What used to be a casual sandwich stop has fully transformed into a sit-down restaurant with a full island menu and a Hawaiian/tiki vibe that absolutely delivers. From the moment you walk in, you're transported: carved wood, colorful lanterns, cozy booths, surfy decor, and just the right amount of playful kitsch. It feels fun, intentional, and honestly kind of magical. The food? So. Good. Every dish we had was flavorful, fresh, and thoughtfully done -- the kind of island-inspired comfort food that makes you want to keep ordering "just one more thing." Nothing felt rushed or half-baked. You can tell they put real care into the menu. And let's talk drinks for a second -- because WOW. The cocktails were beautiful, balanced, and fun without being gimmicky. Perfectly on-theme and dangerously easy to drink. Service was friendly and welcoming, the space is great for both date night and groups, and the whole experience felt like a mini vacation without leaving town. Bottom line: this is not just a sandwich place anymore -- it's a destination. If you haven't been since the change, go back ASAP. And if you've never been? Start here.

I'm from San Diego so you know I'm always gonna pick Pizza Port Beer
Jessie P.

As a San Diegan, let me just say...I felt at home in this place immediately. I love this vibe completely. And they making it even better! Chris, who was working the front counter, told us all about it. Tiki Diablo is going to be designing it into a tiki hut, and I'm so here for it. I was already obsessed with their tiki mug area, and now I'm even more hyped to see it all come together. Chris was amazing -- super personable, brought us a beer to try without us even asking, and took time to chat with us. He even said he'd check out Undertow with us since we haven't been yet. The energy and hospitality here are just different in the best way. And then there's the food...11 out of 10. My girlfriend always gets the Mr. Natural; the veggies are crisp, cold, and super fresh every single time, and the sprouts make it even better. I've had the Italiano, which I thought couldn't be topped... until I tried the Vulcan. That sandwich was unreal. I swapped the Asiago for a French roll and it was game over. Next up for me: the Green Chile Philly and the Southwest Vegan Wrap. Everything coming out of that kitchen looks fire. We also grabbed a Pizza Port beer, repping San Diego right and the cups were ice cold. I love walking into a freezing cold restaurant when it's 110° outside, and they nailed that. Cold beer, cold cups, cold AC -- perfection. This spot is it, the food, the people, the vibe -- they get every detail right. Jeff and the crew are leveling up something that's already incredible, and I'll be coming back again and again. Gilbert doesn't even know what's about to hit. Total gem.

Such a cute tiki vibe and decorations. We arrives at the hostess station around 5:30 and one party was ahead of us and wanted to sit inside. We wanted to sit outside and the hostess told us that because they have a small kitchen she had to wait 5 minutes to seat us. How crazy is that!! People order at different times, I really wanted to sit and have a beer. She waited a few minutes and then sat us (including us there were only 3 groups on the patio. Jake was our waiter and he was great. Most of the menu is priced reasonable but I felt the price of the Mahi Mahi sandwich of $25 was a bit much. The seafood special of grilled salmon was $35 and also seemed a bit pricey. I ordered the ahi poke bowl ($19) and my husband go the grilled shrimp Big Kahuna bowl ($18) you could pick your toppings for the Big Kahuna bowls.....and if you want pickled jalapeños it's $1.50 extra!! A bit much for jalepenos!! Our food came quickly and both were delicious!! Plenty of ahi and I loved the spicey aioli. They also have a happy hour. I'll definitely go back, I want to try the Hawaiian hot wings!!

I kicked off our 90-minute experience with the Blackberry Yuzu Margarita, and it was the perfect balance of crisp, sweet, and tart. I wrapped things up with the Macadamia Nut Piña Colada which, fittingly for being "aboard" a pirate ship, was delightfully rum-forward without being overly sweet. In between cocktails, we shared a couple of snacks that were such a welcome addition -- something you sadly don't always find at local speakeasies! The service was top-notch thanks to our bartender Rocco, whose knowledge and attention to detail made the experience even more fun. Between the creative cocktails, immersive vibe, and fantastic hospitality, Undertow is easily one of the coolest spots around!

Of course, this place is known for its cocktails, so naturally they should be great--but trust me, I've been to several cocktail-only establishments that were lackluster. Absolutely NOT the case here. You could literally put all the pages of the menu on a wall, throw a dart, and whatever you hit would be delicious and interesting in its own right. The place is a little small, but honestly, that's what I love about it. It feels cozy in all the right ways. It's also very relaxing, floating along the sea with some delightful surprises here and there. We ordered several drinks, but one that's not on the menu (and they do make it) is the Pearl Diver, which is magnificent here. The mixologists and servers are all amazing and should be proud of themselves for bringing such an experience to Gilbert.
